I have done a few LFR, and I managed to get my gear level above 500, however the best gear obtainable here in LFR seems to be around level 528, with some of the items drops being below that, so what's the best gear obtainable for a retribution paladin, what's the highest gear level available and how do you obtain it?

You do the top raid on heroic mode (currently Siege of Orgrimmar). Highest ilevel is 572, iirc.

You can load your character into
Ask Mr. Robot's gear optimizer
. Then you can use the various tools to find better gear as well as to optimize your character. Here is a
generic retribution paladin
already loaded.

The absolutely highest gear one can obtain in the game is currently 588 (572 ilvl Heroic warforged+4/4 VP upgrade),except the legendary cloak which is 616 ilvl (600 base ilvl+4/4 VP upgrade).
As for SoO (Tier 16) LFR,the best gear one can get is 544 ilvl (528 base ilvl+4/4 VP upgrade) assuming that you dont have the legendary cloak.

The Siege of Orgrimmar is the highest end game raid instance. It is divided up into four wings and has four tiers of difficulty.
The tier order lowest to highest is
LFR (looking for raid): Item level on gear is 528
Flexible raids or Flex: item level on gear is 540
Normal Raids: item level is 553
Heroic Raids: Items level is 572.
There is a chance for warforged drops in Flex and above, but I am too lazy to get into all that so crawl around wowhead for that.
You need to be killing the Celestials world bosses on the Timeless isle once a week for a shot at 553 items. There are a variety of PVP gear pieces and two of the PVE set pieces that drop. Again there are perfect guides on wowhead.
It is also worth noting that there are sets of gear that offer spell and ability enhancements for each class that are specific to that class. There are five pieces possible for each set and having two of them equipped offer one enhancement and have four offers an additional enhancement. So you dont need all five equipped only four. Look around wow head for the tier set guides for your class.
The one item every one should be working for is the Dark Prince Cloak. It is 618. Once you get it on one toon on a realm, all toons on that realm can do Ordos kills once a week for 559 gear.

Alright, so the Dark Prince Cloak is the cloak you get from the legendary quest line you get from
Wrathion
, right?

So as I see it, I have to do heroic raids. As far as I know these are only available for guilds, there is no option to join a random team like you do with LFR. My servers population has gone down to low after I came back to world of warcraft, so this might be a challenge..
As far PvP gear, I'm assuming this set is the best available?

Ask yourself this. If you're not going to do real Raids, or Heroic Raids. Why do you need Best in Game gear? What you get in LFR is perfectly fine for all tasks including Timeless Isle currently, and will be fine for entry into WoD.

LFR only gives level 528 gear and I want the best gear in the game as you can read on the topic title.

Correct in order to get the best gear you have to Heroic SoO runs. I recommend this strategy, focus on getting your cloak and do Flex runs until you have item level 540ish, and your cloak.
Then start doing normal runs. Once you are successful at normal runs then you will be able to graduate to Heriocs.
The only thing you have working against you is time. The next Xpac is coming out this fall, so you better hustle.
On PvP gear I do not know, or really care. I suspect the best PvP gear is arena gear you get from the vender, but as I said I really don't care so I have not bothered researching it. But you are posting on the best site for information on anything about WoW so get to searching..

Why? Why do you think! The dude wants the best gear in the game, as we all do..

Do a google search for Open Raid. It is a cross realm online resource for people that want to raid but are in your situation.
Also, check out
www.solidice.com
OQUEQE. It is an in game looking for group tool that is spectacular.
Also learn how to list yourself in the looking for raid option of the social tab. It is bizzare to me that Blizzard hasn't made this part of the micro bar, but here is a good guide.

From the sound of your other posts, it didn't sound like you were willing to do Heroic Raids, so forgive me if I got that wrong.
Yep, Heroic Raids drop the best gear in the game. Get yourself in a Raiding guild to work your way up to them.

I have tried getting into a raiding guild for some time now, but there is very little activity on my server so I have decided to give up on it for now..
So, I think I am going to aim for the best PvP gear instead, as it doesn't require a raiding guild to obtain.
So far, the best PvP gear for my character (protection paladin) I found is this..
Prideful Gladiator's Vindication
But I'm not sure if this is the best PvP gear available, can anyone confirm?

Now, and in the coming months, is probably the
best
time to find a guild. Guilds are ramping up again for Warlords, plus with the level cap going up there's going to be some shuffling around and people deciding not to return and empty raid slots etc etc etc. So if you're truly interested in raiding with a guild, keep looking.
Obtaining the "best gear" right now is mostly pointless since the expansion is ending in a few weeks. Feel free if you need something to work on, but it's a lot of effort for stuff that'll be replaced in November.
You can obtain "good gear" without a guild. Mythic gear would be tougher since many people have static raid teams for that content. But Heroic is very pug-able. If you're interested in Mythic gear now there are a fair number of pugs being run since the stat change made SoO really easy. So just look through the group finder.
However, getting the "best gear" is a progression, you can't jump from 500 ilevel to 580 ilevel. You'll have to work your way through the lower difficulties to gear up before jumping into Mythic (or buy a carry).
This will hold true in Warlords too. You're not going to instantly be able to get the best gear.
Yes, the 550 stuff is the most recent PvP gear available.

I managed to complete the gladiators level 550 pvp set, as well as a couple of rings and trinkets, however I guess its useless in pvp now when level 600 items can be obtained from LFG?
Only difference is that the LFG items from dungeons does not not provide any pvp power.
Post by
Ultimatium
As for above, the level 550 pvp gear is useless as higher level pvp gear is now available.
With the release of Warlords, I'm guessing that the
Battlegear of Guiding Light
is the best pvm gear available right now?
Could anyone confirm this?
Post by
Adamsm
Since it's not in game...no, no we cannot confirm that for you.
Post by
Adamsm
That is Raid gear. The raids are not open until the 2nd.

Thanks for clarifying, but as a more general question, aren't the sets with the highest tier available usually the best?
Post by
CalaelenDT
In general, yes, the highest iLevel gear/Tier sets is usually the best.
