Dear World of Warcraft gamers,
If you are aged 55+, you are welcome to take a survey about the social and emotional impacts of playing WoW on older adults. It is part of a 4-year founded project: “Aging well, can digital games help?”
Our goal is to examine how to use digital games to improve the quality of life of older adults. In addition to exploring questions about your WoW playing experiences, our study explores the potential social and emotional benefits of playing WoW, like dealing with loneliness, depression and isolation issues.
Here is the survey link:

The survey will take approximately 10 minutes. To maintain the confidentiality of survey response, after submitting the survey, you will be directed to a separate website to provide contact info if you wish to become eligible for the lucky draw of two $100 cash prizes.
This research has received ethics approval and is being conducted under permission of the Simon Fraser University Research Ethics Board. If you have any concerns or complaints with respect to your participation in this research as a participant, please direct them to Dr. Jeffrey Toward, Director, Office of Research Ethics at jtoward@sfu.ca or 778-782-6593.
I'd like to thank everyone in advance for taking the time to complete the survey.

Hi
Here are some backgrounds about this survey.
One purpose of this survey is to examine whether playing WoW is an effective way to deal with some issues experienced by older adults, like loneliness, depression and social isolation. That's why we ask questions about your social interaction in real life.
In the spring 2013, we did a survey about general digital games playing among older adults. We recruited 896 participants from shopping malls and communities. Half of them have played digital games.
In the spring 2014, we did a Wii Bowling experiment. We had 20 teams, each of which had 4 members. These teams competed with each other. We assessed how playing game together affects their social interaction.
Now, we are doing this WoW survey. Our next step is to conduct a WoW experiment to assesss the cognitive impacts of playing WoW on older adults.
Anyway, there is a lot to do in this area.

Good luck with the survey. This seems a lot more serious / useful than the dozens of half-arsed "I need to write a research paper but I have no imagination so I'll ask why people get addicted to WoW" I've seen during the last few years.

Agreed.
@OP
Despite being an older gamer, I'm afraid I can't help (too young still)
But I do have a couple of 55+ gamers in my guild who I'll try and direct to the site to help you out.
Good luck, as echoed above it's refreshing to see some thought behind a survey for once.

Hi Emily,
I completed the survey form for you. I also left something of a lengthy comment about how the survey answers may shift due to the specific point we're at in the expansion. It's very late in this expansion and players at this point are more and more likely to take a few months off or at the very least check in much less often than say at the start of a major content patch or a new expansion. I'm playing much less this last month and don't really expect that to change until the fall. Same for most people in my guild so social interaction is way down from what might be considered 'normal'.
Good survey though. Thanks for the opportunity to participate.
I really appreciate your thoughtful ideas. We will take them into consideration when we analyze and report the results. Thank you.

If you like female surprises go to Goldshire :)
Actually over the course of playing WoW since release I've met a lot of 40+ women who play WoW.
Back in Wrath of the Litch King our best raid healer was a 55 year old grandmother. (who kicked her grandson tank for being an ass)

I have many friends in this age group that game, though not specifically WoW. I think this is an area that most game companies overlook. I look forward to seeing the results of your research.
