"Perk of the job," Valence replied grimly, still watching the screen with obvious scorn, cold eyes gleaming from the patchwork road of scars all over his face.
"Sure lass." The waitress vanished into the back and returned a moment later with the pot. "Say when," she said and began filling the proffered cup.

Valence grinned without humour. "You don't know the half of it, kid."
The coffee pot was removed. "Wanna top off?"
"Sure." Valence pushed forward his own mug. "Let me give you a piece of advice, kid, because I'm tired and have had a long day," Valence said as he watched the scalding brown water pour. "There are all kinds of people in this world. And all of those people play by certain rules, certain facts. Facts like I'm a human being, there are laws, that some people deserve to be stuck in a hole and never let out. That?" he said, indicating the screen. "That is the result of someone who doesn't play by any.
"But you know? There is still something worse than that. Do you know what that is?"
The coffee hissed in the silence and slowly died away as the waitress stopped pouring.

"The stupid people who aren't, but wish so badly they were that person."
Static suddenly screamed from the television. The screen washed green and jittered wildly between the image of the apartment building and green screen. The image twitched, cracked, and resolved into a pair of wide round glasses tinted purple set before a pale face. Pearly white teeth smiled into the eatery.
"A'right! We are online!" as she spoke a thin green line jumped across her glasses as though in sympathy to the pitch and volume of her voice.
The chair clattered to the floor. Valence was on his feet and staring at the screen. He watched as the face danced back revealing a slender elf with short cropped hair split down the middle between blue and red. Her lithe body was trapped in a skin tight black synthetic suit that shimmered in the light. Thin lines in the suit glowed a deep violet like her glasses, her smile wide, her movements long and smooth to the point of exaggeration, as though mocking everyone who watched her. The costume was lined with hanging clasps that seemed to serve no purpose and a short skirt, a pair of pauldrons crackling with green energy floating above her shoulders supporting a long purple cloak.
"Hey everybody! I'm handled Slashdot, and I am the running head of the
Hackers
!" She bent her legs, curled her spine and threw her arms high. "Woooo!"
"Damn them!" Valence roared. From a pocket he tore free a cellphone and stabbed the numbers in. "Mainframe! I...Yes! I see it. Track it! Track it now! You can! Do it! Don't give me that! I can see them!"

Lucien nodded. "Yeah. But I want to see what this thing can do. And the AI isn't going to let us in as it stands." He commented, making himself a sandwich before sitting down as well.

Sasha milled about while Ten explained, meandering over to examine one of the walls of the room.

I chuckled as it began floating down the hallway. Below me, I heard the pounding of feet on the floor as the building security kicked in.
I stepped into the Vault and swung the door shut behind me. As I did, soft blue light flickered into existence along the floor and ceiling.
I strode to the very end of the Vault, ignoring the databanks softly beeping around me, and stopped in front of a simple onyx plinth. I stood in front of it for a few moments, then said
Query: |
A spiky, black star-shaped AI faded into existence above the plinth.
Respond: |
securityBriefAbout();
The AI didn't even pause before it responded:
NULL
I felt a grin split my face. An onlooker would call it evil, so I had no hesitation to do so as well.
Oh, EleCo. Their security was truly terrible, though only if you knew the ins and outs. I had worked for them for several months (allegedly to fix it, though not much got done), which led to my first find: a list of bank account passwords, sold to a bidder for a hefty sum.
It looks like security hadn't improved much since I was there last (which was why I used the garage for trades), which was music to my ears.
I lifted the AI in my metal arm.
assumeControl(Andrew, AI);
passCheck();
inputPass(pass);
testLoyal();
It shivered, then turned from black to a mix of black and blue. Password accepted. Please input query.
I laughed. transfer(port:4720);
In a flash, it was gone.

I stepped back into the Dream, pausing briefly to savor the the panicked shouts from beneath me. I let the entrance slide shut behind me and returned to my apartment.

Sorin waited, momentarily bored.
At least, until his radio started crackling. He picked it up and held it to his ear. "Yeah. Okay." He put it back and looked up. "Hey, Madison, I just got a call. There's been a shooting down in some parking garage a few blocks away. They want me to stop by."
He swung one leg up onto his bike. "Call me if you need anything," he said, and sped away.

"Oh, like shopping?" Sasha asked, bouncing back into the elevator.

"Thats intresting. Perhaps we should visit the Explorers Leauge and hear if they can make anything out of it." Falionna suggested as she observed the disc closer. "Think I have a associate there who may help."

"Think we should bring the suit with or leave it here?" Lucien wondered, stopping in front of another door on their way out.
"On one hand, it lets us show it to whoever we can find. On the other hand, I don't exactly want it swiped."
Sashastrasza
Stormwind City, ?
Sasha 'oooh'd and 'aaaah'd at the sigh, beginning to make her way down the rows of guns. Something about her face betrayed the age she appeared; looking akin to a small child eying shelves in a toy store.
She paused at one, however. A very large sniper rifle, meant to fire bullets nearly as long as her own hand; designed to punch through thick hulls of vehicles. Or, if the situation called for it, the thick hides of living targets.

"Sure. We can take the orc with us asweel for support." The dark ranger noded. "And what items do you have to offer?" Her gaze turned to the eyeless undead. Her facial expresion as blank as ever.

It wasn't long before I had returned to my apartment. I stepped inside and over to my computer.
AI: Respond
I typed. A moment later, it replied.
Active.
I rubbed my chin, thinking, then wrote
AI: designate "Harrier"
Acknowledged: Harrier.
I pressed my right hand against a port set into the wall. Bright blue light flowed from my arm and into the port. The screen went blank, then flared.
Acknowledged. Routines updating...
Success!
Initializing components...
Success!
Initializing security protocols...
Success!
Beginning trace...
I stepped away from the AI as it began tracking where Ten had gone. It would take some time, sure, but I had time.
