Then once you hit 70, either do a bunch of dailies or farm items (such as primals).

- Always loot
everything
from mobs; even if it is gray quality and useless to you. Vendor all soulbound or grey items that you do not need, and sell green/blue/purple items in the auction house.
- Do not waste money on enchants and never buy armor/weapons from the auction house while leveling; chances are you will most likely be replacing them soon.
To expand on these two concepts: the only items worth purchasing at the AH are larger bags. The more you can carry, the more gold you make. On average, the grays that will stack up after doing a few quests should at least cover your repair costs; the less time you spend running back and forth to the vendor, the better.
If you haven't already, download the Auctioneer addon. This way, you will be able to tell if something that appears to be worthless garbage to you is actually useful (and therefore worth buying) to a different class.

Well, Considering you only need a lump of money at 40, I would say use the Auction house and get some professions such as mining, You make AWESOME money mining in the outlands, On another note I think I remeber you from somewhere else.

Woolen Bags
will do you well enough until you hit level 17 and will only run you a few silver per.
Don't forget he's a hunter - he'll need to use one slot for an ammo pouch/quiver.
In my opinion the biggest fault most players make with auctioning items is overpricing. Starting from level 25-30ish green drops start to be more up to par compared to instance drops making them very interesting for a lot of classes but if you put them up for 15g a piece don't expect them to be sold soon. I usually auction level 50 greens for 5-8g unless it's obviously superior to another kind (example could be "of the monkey", +stam and +agi on a leather item, which for a rogue is better than an "of the falcon", +stam and +int leather item).
Another thing you should know is what quest reward to take. Very frequently you'll have to choose a quest reward that is useless for you. Obviously you then want to make most gold out of the rewards by vendoring them. I usually choose my rewards to this list:
Melee weapons
Ranged weapons
Shields
Plate items
Mail items
Leather items
Cloth items
Anything else usually vendors for pretty much the same price.
Another thing you should always remember is what to take when your bags are full. Ofcourse, ideally you get to a vendor when your bags are near full, but it will happen sooner or later that you just need a couple more quest item drops or need to kill 20 more mobs until you ding, and civilization is nowhere to be seen around. In that case I also throw out grey items according to the same list. So mail gloves should replace cloth shoes.
A little sidenote to this is that grey weapons are worth quite a chunk of gold. Sometimes I vendor a two-handed level 45 axe for more than a green level 50 quest reward chest.
I hope this helps.

Tbh skinning is pretty worthless for moneymaking. I'd rather go with Mining and Herbalism, or potentially Mining/Herbalism and Enchanting to DE all those quest rewards you have no use for.
The reason it's not suggested to do Mining -and- herbalism is you can only track one at a time. Skinning isn't as profitable as one of those two, but probably 65% of things you kill you will be able to skin, as opposed to finding the higher level resource nodes scattered every so often with competition of other players thrown in.
