There are tons of other players with a wide range of personalities... make friends with the ones you like. Cheesy or not, the most memorable moments in the game will always involve the friends youve made. You'll never think "Aah, remember that cloak I got with the awesome stats?" You'll say "Remember that time you and me were in Moonbrook and found out that our Target Dummies could trick the little allys into flaggimg themselves?"
Check out the sunset from Thunderbluff or Theramore... bring your babe.
Dont worry about gear, stats, data until your late levels. Worry about enjoying the game for the world that it is. Level up emerged in a world, not as a new statistic. You'll get to level 80 and then you will start worrying about gear, and spend your time trying to get it... and during those mind-numbing hours, you will look back on your levling experience and think "Has my whole time in WoW been one long grind? Or do I have memories of some really enjoyable moments?" The answer is, and always will be, GNOMISH ENGINEERING.

On the subject of Thrown and other ranged attacks, unless you're a hunter, there's no need to use a gun or bow. They require one of your bag slots for ammo. Just using a thrown weapon will free that bag slot up. If you use your ranged weapon mainly for pulling, a thrown weapon does that fine.

Don't listen to people who do not constructively criticize the way you play. You're allowed to play how you want to, and you'll pick up the best style of play after a little trial and error anyway. THIS DOESN'T MEAN IGNORE TIPS!
Don't buy things from the Auction House at lower levels if you can help it. Every piece of gear you buy will be replaced with something better within the next two levels, and then that gold is gone forever. Save for your mounts, trust me, you're going to need it!
Don't run back to town after every quest to turn it in and get your reward. Try to do at least 3 quests before going back to turn them all in, this saves time while leveling.

1) Loot everything, Especially greys. the day you realise that a stack of 20 grey items sells for 16 gold is the day you can buy a mount.
2) Log out in Inn's or Capital cities, one night rested XP is 2-4 bars on your xp Line.
3) Don't Use caps lock. nobody, and i repeat nobody likes, or even pays attention to people who think capslock is something people will look at. i ignore people who use capslock.
4) If there is a fight or an arguement in general chat, Keep your mouth shut or ignore them and keep questing. many times have people been burned who have tried to use an opinion in an arguement.
5) If you dont know, ask. many times i see people asking questions, i answer them, or direct them to wowhead.
6) Learn from your mistakes. "Don't Pull, DONT F*CKING PULL" Just listen to your party leader, he/she usually knows their stuff. if they dont, just stay positive and offer suggestions, if they threaten to kick you from the group, whisper another member and ask them whats wrong.
7) Don't ask for leader in groups, even to invite people in, just tell your friend to whisper the leader of your group, not many people like typing names when its easier to just say 'tell them to pst me.' instead of "/inv goog(backspace)gooft(backspace)goofyref(backspace)goofyred. and im a good speller.
Other than that, never beg. Always whisper somebody that is killing the same mobs as you and ask them if they are on your quest.

1: Remember that half of the people in the game will be friendly to you
2: Remember that half of the people in the game either dont know how to talk or just dont want to
3: Remember that if you never knew something you can't remember it

Wow, nice thread. Wish I'd had something like this when I started a year ago.
Forgive my humanness, but I didn't read every single post. I'll try and put something here I didn't see mentioned 20 times already:
1) Even if PvP is the reason you started playing WoW, I would suggest
not
starting on a PvP server. You need to learn the game mechanics first. Starting on a PvP server where most people know what they're doing while you don't have a clue is just going to make the whole process too frustrating. Join a normal server to start with, get a feel for the game and for different classes, join a few BG's, then swap to your PvP server of choice and benefit from the experience.
2) Addons...find em, use em, love em. This has been mentioned before, I know, but I'd add macros as well. Macros look complicated to start with, but
WoWWiki
has some good starter info and some pretty handy macros ready for you to use. Even if you decide against using macros, for the sake of your sanity set up a nice /target macro (e.g /target Caliph Scorpidsting). It makes looking for specific (named) mobs so much easier, especially when the buggers have patrol paths.
Back on addons for a second - Auctioneer is awesome if used properly. This, imo, includes making a lvl 1 mule alt and having auctioneer set to
only
show up on that character. It's fairly memory heavy and it can slow you down.
3) If you're having trouble with lag, try hitting your options - video - effects, and turning everything right down and unchecking all the boxes. Then get the Spell Detail bar and
turn it up to maximum
. Can't tell you the number of times I died because I was standing in the fire...that I couldn't see because my spell detail was down. Oh how my guild wanted to beat me with sticks...
Other than that...have fun! Do what you want to do, not what everyone says you should do. Good luck, happy hunting, and I'll see you at 80 ;)
