Considering that pretty much all Video Game movies suck massively, I'd bet the opposite would happen; not only would they not draw in a new player base, it would turn off those people, thinking the game would be just like the movie.
And they suck because we are the heroes. Watching someone else play us is boring. If Kevin Bacon didn't play my toon it would be let down, too.
Without us in the cast the movie loses meaning, we're just flies on the wall, when we are the heroes...not them. Watching the NPC story, we seen enough of that ingame.
But it doesn't hurt inspiration. It won't bring the vets back, it might bring in newer players, though.

No, video game movies suck because they are horribly done; look at the steaming pile of crap that is Tomb Raider, House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, the second Mortal Kombat movie, all of the Resident Evil movies after the first, the Street Fighter movies...crap crap crap. Let's not add Warcraft to that list shall we?
And we aren't the heroes; we are the faceless masses who assist the Lore figures with their wars.
As for bringing in newbies...again: If the movie sucks, you won't see people coming to play the game, because again, they'll think the game is like the piece of crap movie.

Assuming it would suck or not is hard to judge since it did not happen. Not really; other then the first Mortal Kombat movie, pretty much every other video game movie has been a flop and lost their producing studio money....well, when it's done Live Action big budget big screen; some of the direct to video/dvd/blu-ray video game movies are alright.
The movie and the book are part history and part things happening behind the scenes to what the player is experiencing. Nothing happening is a part of what the player is doing, COT instances excluded. Exactly; how would you draw new players into the MMO if the movie has nothing at all to do with the MMO beyond having the history of a character. If anything, it would more then likely make them go pick up Warcraft 3 to find out the full story.
ended up just being a three hour trailer I honestly hope the finished Warcraft movie isn't three hours long; two hours sure, but not any longer, since if it's a massive thing, it will get compared constantly to LOTR and LOTR Light(IE the Hobbit), which doesn't help Warcraft out at all.
Off topic for the movie: I hope they stick to the original rumoured outline of it, which was that it was suppose to take some place during the 4 year time period between the end of the Warcraft 3 and the start of WoW; tell a tale, a story, but don't actually tie it into anything that has happened, so it's not 'tainted' by the previous thing.

Maybe to you, but if my toon was just a faceless mass, I sure wouldn't have wasted the money on the game to be but a cog in a wheel.

Again? How would they play again if they never played before?

He's saying again because he had to say this stuff before. Read it again without the "again".

You are just a cog in the wheel though: Tirion finished the Lich King, not us. The Aspects and Thrall put down Deathwing, not us. Kalec and Anveena stopped Kj and resealed the Portal, we the mass were just there to drive back the mooks.
We are the brave adventurers, but never named. We fight the wars and the battles, but we do not slay the Gods etc etc etc.
In other words, since every single player can technically do the same thing, you know, go into the dank dungeons and slay the monster, Blizzard only refers to us as adventurers; we aren't the heroes of these stories, merely the forces standing behind the Lore Heroes.

The Again refers to the fact that I have to say it more then once, since people seem to just skim over it. It's basic language.

Heh! Wowpixel has delusions of grandeur.
Also how on earth are you supposed to feel heroic when LFR exists and puts you with 24 random people, half of who have room temperature IQs, and bellow the heroic and inspirational warcry of "LOL NOOBS"
Sorry given the other "heroes" around me I'd rather be a faceless cog and not associated in any way with them.

its not that are characters arent heroes, its that they arent The Heroes.
with the movie topic though, my issue would be: wow has way too much lore to make any decent movie. maybe they show arthas rising to lich king, but the audience wouldnt know about the burning legions involvement and the orc warlocks or any ridiculous number of things that happened before arthas picked up frostmourne.

When the family members who got me into WoW first saw The South Park WoW Episode they swore they would never pick up the game. But sure enough, they ended up playing.
Whether you liked that episode or not, it did provide exposure and ignited interest in the game.
A WoW movie done in the theme of the game, where ordinary people are drawn into the conflict to become heroic participants, rather then one just showing us the lore could also ignite new interest, whether the movie is smartly done or not.
Movies like Star Trek:reboot and Transfomers have restored interest in long dormant genres, so it might be worth the risk to see if a WoW movie might find a new audience. The question is who are you going to target.
One of the keys to WoW's initial success was the amount of adults who played it(myself included), many who didn't play anything else. A dedicated WoW player.

His point was that the story writ large is too large to tell in one movie.
Also, cease with the insults lest anyone point out your own foibles. I'll refrain from pointing them out to provide you with an intellectual exercise - discovering them yourself.

Not that I particularly want a Warcraft movie but the same could be said the LOTR. The back story to that book is massive and is only alluded to but I will grant Mr Jackson one thing in that he made three very good movies even if he did mess around with too many characters for my liking.

If anyone's seen HBO's Rome, I always felt our characters are like Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus, the loyal and proven go-to "heroes" to historical figures Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, who are more on par with lore characters like Varian Wrynn and Jaina Proudmoore.
Pullo and Vorenus are the ones sent out on quests, fight the battles, etc while Caesar and Antony handle the political aspects.

That was sort of my point. That though history may record the characters you mentioned when histories are written of certain events it was people's wow toons which were actually called upon to do a good deal of the heavy lifting so they could swoop in at the last moment and take credit.
Thats the case with pretty much everything though, look at all the so called great historical figures, they rarely got their hands dirty.
