Hi there, fellow forum dwellers, this is your favorite Latino once more, this time I'll be posting an in-depth review of the new F2P MMO Neverwinter Online.
This will also be the thread to discuss any aspect of the game (To avoid cluttering up the bin thread) from classes, gameplay, your thoughts on the foundry etc.
The review wont be up for a while I wanna play the game for at least 2 days before I post my impressions on it, but for the time being I've created this thread to funnel all discussions of this promising new MMO into one solid spot.
For those curious to create an account and try this game,
this
is the place to go.
For those curious on how the game looks like, here are a few trailers.

A more in-depth review is incoming. Wait for it ;)

Good call- definitely a game worth discussing.

Indeed, good idea Rank!
So, now there's a new thread I want to bring up the subject of the Great Weapon Fighter. The other classes have clear roles:
GF = Tank
DC = Healer
TR = Single target DPS
CW = Control and AoE
GWF = ...?
The GWF appears to be lacking in Single target and AoE but also doesn't have a niche in other ways right now. that said, it's the one class that I haven't even created and tried out myself so perhaps I'm missing something important.

To reiterate what I initially said about the game back in the Video Game thread. My biggest gripe is that it doesn't feel like a D&D game. It really doesn't feel like a Neverwinter game (which were some of my favorite games of all time), and I find that disappointing. In its own right, it's a decent game so far though. I really like being able to level professions when not logged into the game.

I think GWF is definitely intended to be DPS- they wanted to leave people who like warriors a non-tank option, I think.
I haven't played tabletop since 2nd Ed., so this game is based on a version of D&D I'm not familiar with (4th ed.). I have been lead to believe that that version of the table top is much more mmo-ish than the one I have played. In second ed there is no such thing as a tank, beginning mages and healers could maybe cast 1-2 spells a day, and most recovery happens over the course of extended downtime. I don't think any of that makes for a good MMO, and so I am fine with them having to make the combat and spell access more video-game friendly.
The place where I feel that this game shines, and reminds me of D&D, is the quirks of how you interact with the world. I routinely find myself noticing chests because i checked around a corner I wouldn't normally have had to look around, finding hidden doors and switches, and having to disarm traps which, if you're not a rogue, blend in quite nicely with the background. I find that I am seeing reasons to clime onto ledges, look for a way to hop across obstacles, and otherwise am engaging in the actual terrain in a way you more often see in a single-player game. The feel while questing (random dungeon groups blow through too fast) is very much like a D&D game IMO- you are still crawling through dungeons, taking your time to check things out, exploring, etc.
I also like the art style with regard to the armor, not so much the clothing. I think the play is pretty intuitive, the combat animations are cool, and it's just an overall fun combat experience. I may start to feel like I'm lacking on ability slots if as I gain more powers, though- I'll let you know.
I think that the crafting system is nice, though I'd prefer a few more options in terms of types of crafts. I think that they balance the F2P model well, giving us a reason to want to spend cash but still providing a full unhindered game experience if we don't. I love that we can have companions- games are more fun with a pet or a sidekick.
I just started playing with the foundry, but that is above and beyond probably the most interesting feature of the game. To be able to build campaign content, and then make it available to everyone else. Totally a great tool for a former GM who has moved on to video games but still wishes to do some storytelling.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##ElhonnaDS##DELIM##

AHHHHHH I DON'T KNOW WHAT RACE TO PICK!!!!
Hey sis, your rogue, what race was it?
I only get 2 character slots, which is a shame, cuz I'm tempted to choose the Great Weapon Fighter. As I've stated before, the frezying barbarian berserker class is always my favorite one to play on every RPG.
I'll be making a Guardian Fighter and a Trickster Rogue for now, but I'm really undecisive on what race to pick. I'm also undecided on what gender to pick, this is the first RPG in YEARS that actually has decent male models.
Usually when it comes to MMOs, developers put a lot of time and effort in the female models, and they not only look good, they tend to have great animations, but don't really give the same treatment to male models. This is why all my toons in wow are female. Male models are terrible (with the possible exception of worgens) or they're not as good as their female counterparts (I like the male blood elf model, but the female one is vastly superior in animation quality)
So now I'm in this MMO and I'm in the character creator, and I can't decide what race to play, as they all have nice bonuses, or what gender to play, as they all look pretty good.

My rogue is a halfling. I picked that because of the racial bonuses, and also because this is one of the first games in a while to recognize that the really short humanoid races aren't necessarily supposed to be childlike. I clicked over to the character model of the halfling in the rogue armor, and thought she looked like a badass. She didn't look like a kid in a set of armor.
I made a Tiefling mage too.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##ElhonnaDS##DELIM##

I've made 2 investments in the game so far, one was a character slot upgrade (2 slots for the one upgrade) and the other was a mount. These came to 1000 points which is 10 Euro (slightly less than that GBP) or, in other words, a month's subscription. I feel like I'm easily getting enough enjoyment from the game for this to be worth it, though YMMV of course.

@Rankkor Whatever race\ can give you +2 in your primary stat (unless you're playing cleric, in which case Charisma is arguably better than Wisdom).

Well, made a guardian fighter.
Female half-orc called Derah.
Mixed feelings about the game so far, but then again I've only played 5 min. I like how fluid the combat is, few games manage to do that. Reminds me a ton of kingdoms of amalur, and since I love that game, this one can't be that bad :P
What I am concerned however, is the limited character slots, only 2, after I make my rogue, I wont have any more space. My main concern is that they add another tanking class like the paladin (another favorite of mine in D&D games) and I wont be able to make one because I have no more slots.

They're cheap to add.
...by which I mean that it's not necessarily a long-term concern since you'll only need more slots if you're enjoying it and if you're enjoying it then it's a very small cost for a game you like.(##RESPBREAK##)16##DELIM##asakawa##DELIM##

They're cheap to add.
They're cheap to add if you have access to an internationally accepted currency :/
On the other hand, Rank, it's F2P- you can just make multiple accounts for more character slots.

Yeah, this.
My currency is only accepted in venezuela, and nowhere else, and there is no way to exchange my money to other types of currencies due to my government. So even if it costed 1 cent of a dollar, I'd still be unable to purchase them.

I guess.

They do have prepaid zen cards. In addition, there is an in game exchange where you can trade Astral Diamnonds (an in game currency) for Zen (the real-money currency) so you technically can earn free Zen in game.

I very much doubt it. After all, videogames are illegal :S I used to pay my wow subscription with gamecards, but then those were gone too (except via black market, but that's hideously expensive, almost my entire salary of a month)

well, that one will have to do.
are you online at the moment? I wanna add you to the friend list. I'm gonna log on wow and leave my more in-depth gaming of this for the weekend. Right now I'm eager to get my ally DK to 90.
BTW; I'm enjoying the tank class :P Finished the tutorial boss without taking a single hit of damage. I R BLOCK MASTER!!!!!!
I loved how I had to block when the archers fired, then charge at them and cleave them all down. I must say, the combat system of this game is awesome.
I'm also relieved to see that their definition of "Daily Power" isn't taken literally :P I hate it when games only let me use a certain ability once a day, or in the case of Lineage II, once every 4 hours.
