Tbh, I think people made too big a deal out of that. Its not like race was ever a huge issue in the series. If you can ind the right asian actor good, but if a 10 year old oriental actor is hard to come by I don't get bothered by the white kid.
Complaining about Aang being played by a white kid in that movie is like complaining about the front yard of a house that is on fire.
EDIT: That kind of goes to show you the double standard on racism btw. If it was the other way around, an iconic white character being played by an actor of a different race, you wouldn't hear as many people complaining about it as there were for the Avatar movie, and those who did complain would probably be *!@#$ed out as racists.

Only reaction I can gather.
Did you even bother reading the last pages?

I'm trying to adjust how I react to people who piss me off lately, so I'm going to give you a chance to explain the rude response before I say anything insulting back. And no I didn't feel like scrolling through five pages of convo that I didn't take part in.

She basically said race shouldn't be the huge issue that it is.
And you have a problem with that?
Okay, I refrained from another reaction. Barely.
No, I think everyone agrees on that front. But pretending that it isn't a big deal when there are still a lot of barriers for non-whites in society doesn't improve the situation. I'd suggest you go back a page and read the part about poor representation for non-whites in media. Whitewashing existing characters of color (which is pretty damn frequent) just contributes to the white-centric problem that is in Hollywood and that therefore feeds down through cultural diffusion. In Avatar, there are
no white people
, period. By whitewashing the protagonists, and ensuring that the antagonists (Fire Nation, I know that Iroh isn't that evil and Zuko redeems himself but in Book 1 they
are
antagonists) were very clearly identified as another ethnicity - most clearly not white, it comes with a heap of unfortunate implications.

Ryja, people complained because the cast got white washed(literally); I'm sure it would be more then possible to find enough Asian actors and actress to fill out the cast, and not find the need to make everyone white. Hell, the Water Bender tribes of both Poles are more or less a analog of the Inuit in the Avatar World, so would it really have been that bad to have some Native Americans playing those roles? And the Fire Nation are fairly obviously meant to be Asian; would it have killed Hollywood to try to find some Hong Kong stars to come play some parts?
The fact is, Hollywood is white washed, and with a few exceptions, most of of the time other races/cultures are done by the stereotype, which is supposedly what people 'feel' comfortable with. The one good thing is that
at least this
doesn't happen anymore.

Well, I can tell you that continuing to whine about things such as actors in a freaking movie aren't going to solve any problems. Everyone knows Hollywood is full of idiots, yet you continue to be insulted by their choices of cast.
Okay, fine. You think Hollywood is dumb. Great. That doesn't stop it being pretty damned influential on the cultural sphere in America and even other western countries. You're ignoring the problem, which is the actual problem.
Whitewashing a non-white character and racebending a white character in the US are not equivalent. Because the white population of that population are demonstrably overall in a better position in society than a non-white population - they start the ladder a couple of steps up. I don't understand what is so difficult to understand about this concept.

This whole thread is starting to remind me of that episode of Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia where Mac and Dennis are arguing about whether you can have tasteful black face in a movie. Legitimately, you people are starting to sound
that
stupid.
@EluraE
You call me stupid over like, nothing, and then make a post thats half cap talking or profanity filtered? You sound like a raging 12 year old, if your not going to try to sound intelligent then I'm not even gonna bother.
@Patty
First of all, where in my post did I say that white washing didn't happen?
You're reading things in my post that isn't there. I know white washing happens. What I said was that it was the least of that movies problems, and if the rest of the movie was well put together, it wouldn't have been terrible, just because of the race of some cast members. There wasn't any massive conspiracy about that movie, it was just a poorly planned and lazily directed piece of ^&*!.
The over the top and obnoxious reactions you two had were completely uncalled for, and responding with some snippy gif like that instead of trying to impeach the actual points of my post makes you look like a little b***h. Frankly I expected better from you.

Okay, so institutionalized racism is less important to you than the poor quality of a movie adaptation due to poor planning. Nice job at being a decent human being. You've got it the wrong way around. The racism is more of a *!@#ing problem than the fact it was a #$%^ty film. I still don't understand how this is a difficult concept to understand.

If you had literally gone back a couple of pages you would have seen an explanation of why you were wrong. I'm sorry you're that lazy. I didn't address the points you made because frankly they were so uninformed and idiotic that I could not think of a response that wouldn't get me banned. My apologies.

We try not to moderate thread in which we've posted so take this as a suggestion from another user of the forum.
The topic has currently been lost and tempers are running high (to the point of ad hominem which is never cool). If people feel like there's some interesting discussion in the topic of movie casting then I would suggest a thread be made for it.

Quoting again because it seems like some posters didn't quite understand.
@asa: I'm sorry, but racism is an issue very close to my heart and excusing it on the basis of "it was a crap movie anyway" is just not going to cut it. So, apologies, but I think it still falls under the broad umbrella of the thread.

@EluraE
Idiots like you who lose your #$%^ and insult anybody who has a different opinion than you are the reason that topics like this stay so taboo. They never get discussed and that probably is a large cause of why racism is still such a problem.
"Agree with me or you're racist" is a closed minded debating point, I'm not even going to bother discussing this with you when your posting like some raving child.

I don't understand how
this
is difficult to understand. I NEVER SAID WHITE WASHING DOESN'T HAPPEN. All that I said was that I am no more bothered by an asian character being played by a white actor than I would be by a white character being portrayed by an actor of a different race.
Again your reading things in my original statement that are not there. Unless you wanna quote something specific I said, stop putting words in my mouth.
I'm sorry you're that lazy.
Holy #$%^, I'm sorry your that
slow
. You are so full of crap, all that i said in my post was that race does not matter to me in either case.
And btw, odds are the white washing in Avatar was more a result of of lazy directing rather than this massive conspiracy you are trying to make it out to be.
You're posts are so @#$%ing dishonest. It is pathetic that topics like this are still impossible to discuss because mentally stunted people like you can't seem to discuss it without seeing red and flailing around like a retarded chimp at the keyboard every time they read something that could possibly be construed as racist.
