Alternately, it's a place to store soulbound items for people who enjoy different aspects of the game than AnrDaemon does, such as transmog, vanity items, tabard collecting, etc. If you enjoy those things, then Void Storage is very handy. If you don't, then you'll most likely never need it.

This is strange.. I'm sure I remember back in vanilla wow being able to remove your backpack (traveller's backpack, not soulbound, from memory) and put a different pack there.. and send that pack off to an alt, or the AH.
Obviously I'm mistaken, but that's how I remember it.

Nope,
Traveler's Backpack
is a normal bag. The icon is very similar to the basic backpack, though.
Also, yes, bags from Vanilla do not bind when used, so you can mail them around.

Not sure if this has already been mentioned in this thread but as part of the next expansion didn't they mention that they will be upping the stacks to 100 and also allowing crafting from your bank, so the reliance on having stuff in your bags isn't so big and having what is currently 5 stacks in one will save loads of space, allowing you to stack 1600 ore for example just in your backpack.

Upping stack sizes would be a huge help. I don't remember seeing about that in what little I've seen on WoD but I hope you're right.

Yeah, they said they'd be upping stack sizes on a lot of stuff. I don't think they mentioned an amount per stack, though.

They are making MANY changes in the next expansion in regards to inventory space
1. Heirlooms no longer require bag space
2. Gear will ´change´ base stats depending what spec you are in. This will help certain classes a lot. I am currently bear/restro on my main and so keep two sets of gear with me.
3. Toys and novelty items no longer require bag space
4. Crafting can be done from items in the bank
5. There are no more quest items, they will just be ´tracked´, not be an item in your backpack.
6. Items, most noteably gems, ore and other crafting items will stack up to 100
Even in this expansion I have no trouble with bag space despite the fact that I have 2 sets of gear with me, and a few toys, fishing poles, pet bandages and my enchanting stuff. I think next expansion, I am going to have a ton of bag space. I think the only time I even think about it is when I solo the old AQ raids because there are so many quest/rep items in there.

#5 is something that should have been in the game all along - bags fill up fast at lower levels and it's a chore to keep having to run back to a vendor to empty bags (or delete items and lose any gold you would have made by selling them).
Scratch that - all of these changes should be baseline updates to the game right now. I also like #2, as I don't play ele/resto shaman since I don't want to gain a second set of gear in addition to my enhancement set, but I wouldn't mind trying out elemental or resto.

From what has been said in the past changing the backpack in any way or adding another bag risks screwing up all the current bag content. Yes it was short-sighted but its just not worth the risk.

Storage has been an issue for as long as the game has been around. I, like everyone else here have filled every available space with all of the trinkets and lucky-dos I could get my gloved hands on during my travels across Azeroth and The Outlands. Reading the notes for 6.0, the Dev team is really trying to accommodate us with new ways of storing all of our much needed useless items. Give them a chance, they are trying. Remember being level 1 and having to collect EVERYTHING in a very small backpack just to have 4 copper to get the training you needed.....
