Snowmane had fallen asleep again, but woke with a start when Varyn closed his book. "I don't know," she replied, yawning. "We could go up and see, I suppose."

Sighing, Varyn stowed the book away. With a covered yawn he nodded and made his way to the door of the hold and pushed his way outside.

"I will not," Damocles replied with absolute conviction. "Otherwise you will be interred in a storage chamber specifically for your containment indefinitely. You will be broken down back into your soul stone and encased within a box. That box will be left in a pristine room with no energy you can draw on and not to be entered. I am fortunate, as your prison," he said, tapping her chest with his scalpel, "comes pre-installed.
"However, I feel your use would be wasted in such a state," he continued in the same monotone voice. "I am confident you can be better put to use temporarily between incarcerations."

Pushing his way onto the deck, Varyn peered behind them, the commotion centered at the rear of the icebreaker in the elevated section. Now highly curious, the age clambered up the ladder and found nearly the entire crew clustered about the stern railing. Shading their eyes and peering in the distance, their mumbled voices swelled and hushed intermittently making distinguishing anything difficult.
"Suppose its-"
"Looks like a fish."
"Can be. Movin' too fast."
"I think-"
"Goin' over the water."
Curious, Varyn squirmed through the group to try and catch a glimpse of what was seen. Shading his eyes against the sun and leaning over the railing, he stared at a small black speck moving across the horizon. Though at first confused, Varyn quickly surmised that whatever it was, its journey was directly angled towards the ship.

"You will be used as a weapon against those you came here with. The mission is to terminate the other paradoxes. I have determined that it is highly unlikely you pose a threat in regards to betrayal. In order to facilitate your assistance, it would be best you were at peak condition. Therefore, I will fix you, and you will do whatever is required."

"No." Damocles narrowed his eyes a fraction. "You are Subject 829, fel infused paradox masquerading as a woman. A tool to be used as I see fit. You will never be anything otherwise. The process has a high chance of equilibrating your mental state so you might better serve as such.
"However," Damocles continued in a somewhat kinder tone, "It is highly likely you will identify yourself as 'Mary' following the procedure." Reaching forward, he pressed a hand into her shoulder. Ever ready, the copper locket with the lightstone was held behind his back. "You will never leave here, unless it is on a mission. This is a fact. If this is not done, you will continue to regress until 'Mary' no longer exists, and you are little more than a lump of violent fel magic.
"This is your reality now," he informed her, giving her shoulder a slight squeeze through his glove. "Accept this, and you may be able to recapture some piece of your past."

What soon became apparent to all those on deck was that indeed, it was a rider. Garbed all in black with blue fire flaring from hooves and eyes, the horse thudded across a sheet of ice which continuously formed beneath its hooves as it laboured forward, ferrying it across the vastness of the sea and before the golden wash of the setting sun. Head low and galloping hard, blue fire flicking from its nostrils and unholy light blazing from its form like the fire's of wisps it charged. Like death itself, Mordecai leaned over the Baron, urging the dreadsteed forward wordlessly, reins clutched in his gauntlets, never looking back to the slowly dissolving ice sheet he left behind, his unblinking eyes trained on the vast icebreaker still steaming forward.
The crew watched in mute wonder as the horseman slowly closed the distance, sea spray falling behind as snow, sapped of their heat by the death knight's unearthly cold. Who knew how long he had rode across the ocean itself, but as he drew closer a ragged and uncertain cheer began to break loose from those watching, the sound of those who despite their leanings, are rarely impressed making when they are all the more momentous.
At last the horse drew alongside the ship. The cheers swelled as the dread steed threw its head forward, redubling tis speed as, with an echoing whinny the horse flung itself across up and across the distance to the low mid deck.
With a thud the Baron landed, hooves clicking off the wooden deck as it cantered around twice to lose its momentum. Then, with as much dignity as ti could muster, it collapsed onto its knees.
Dismounting, Mordecai took one step forward, and slowly lowered himself to one knee, his energy spent from the forced ride. Varyn was immediately at the giant's side, remonstrating and expressing surprise in a single slew of words.

Damocles said nothing, his eyes unreadable as he absorbed that news. Clearly, he would have to break that illusion from her, but it would be far more effective if she did not have her insanity with which to retreat into. So he would help her, he knew as he removed his comforting hand. Rebuild her, help her recover, then break her once and for all beyond any prayer of recovery.
It was easy to play the odds knowing every card you opponent has.
"Then you agree, subject 829."

"Good Light Mordecai what were you thinking!" Varyn cried as he helped the death knight sit against the wall of the ship. "Insanity! Absurd! I...What on Azeroth were you thinking? Surely you learned I was bound to Northrend? Why not meet me there, rather than such...such...I am at a loss!"
Head lowered and the burning eyes dimmed, Mordecai slowly nodded. "I...have returned, my lord," the death knight rumbled in a barely audible tone as he leaned back against the wood.

"Light's sake," Varyn muttered as the crew leaned form their position and cheered again, pointing at the death knight. Their ecstatic motions were still buoyed by the sight, and the carefreeness which remained as they failed to consider the implications of precisely what they were celebrating, at which point sobering results and the question of what exactly they were to do with it now?
Such a question fortunately occured tot eh captain some time ago and Varyn quickly took the other man aside to explain the particulars in hurried tones. The result of this left Snowmane with the Death Knight, who eyed her from the depths of his helm with an intent burning gaze.

Pushing her back and strapping her down once more, Damocles reached back to the Light stone lamp and aimed it over her. With a click the fixtures slowly turned in their sockets, revealing on the other side the dark circles of void stones prepared and ready.
Turning, Damocles moved to the table and retrieved an odd device. Resembling a pair of sharp meat thermometers covered in runes and with a small vial filled with black liquid jutting from the top, he returned to Malice and carefully applied them to her chest.
"This will subdue even your consciousness to avoid the trauma of the dissolving of those corrupting personalities," he informed her as he pressed them past her skin until the touched the soul stone. "It is a form of mild Shadow magic to compress your awareness, ensuring you are calm and unaware of the procedure. It is known to be quite traumatic otherwise."
Damocles pressed his thumbs to the runes. With an eldritch black light the liquid within the vials bubbled and the soft, shadowy embrace of unconsciousness pressed against Malice's awareness. "Relax," Damocles instructed. "It will react much faster if you do."

Several minutes later Varyn propped open the door and helped Mordecai enter the hold. Of course, considering theri difference in size, it was quite blatantly apparent that the mage was not so much assisting the giant as the latter was humoring him. Slowly but surely, Varyn managed to maneuver Mordecai to a clear spot on the floor where the death knight sat in, though rigid yet, repose once more like the corpse of a massive steel boned skeleton.
Standing, the mage exhaled heavily.

As soon as he was assured Malice was unaware of the world around her, Damocles went to work. In actuality, he had no need of using anesthetic, as he did not care in the least whether the procedure tortured her or not. However, he was well aware that what he was to attempt would be hampered tremendously were she awake and able to resist. If she thought the procedure for her benefit, then so much the better, but that was not the point. In his study of the fel creature, he had developed a few theories of his own, possibilities which he was intent to explore.
He grabbed several knives and carefully peeled away the fake flesh of her breast, digging deep within with the skill of a surgeon by trade. His practiced eye kept watch as he carefully pinned the flaps of fel green skin to either side. Standing back, he gazed at the dimly swirling stone which lay within, housing the latent soul of his subject like a pearl in a clam.
He turned away. Mary, Malice, it mattered not. They were paradoxes both, beings who only caused harm by their presence alone and existed solely to be contained or killed. Her comfort, safety or well being were as inconsequential as their existence should be. But Damocles was no fool. He knew potential existed in these paradoxes, few though they may be, to work against their own kind. It was why he had captured rather than killed her, why he had given her the option rather than forced it.
Thus he tightened her straps as much as they would go. He positioned the void stones above her head and with a turn of a wheel focused them in their entirety like a point above Malice's chest where the two rods jutted like markers from the stone.
Damocles turned back to the table a final time and faced the table. Before him lay a delicate wooden box carved with filigree and fine details of pointless ornament, depicting the states of spirit and the leering faces of demons. Grasping the lid, Damocles slowly opened the chest and beheld the two empty soul stones which rested within.
Damocles permitted the slight turn of a smile beneath his collar and picked them out of the box.
