"Alright," Snowmane answered. "Let's start with the basics. You know what ley lines are and how they work, right?"

"I do."

"Alright, now when most people think of ley lines, they think of them in the context of Azeroth," Snowmane answered, drawing some runic shapes in the air. "The shapes of these ley lines on Azeroth are used as runes to power magic, and even have some innate magical effects on the land," she paused. "But really, they are much more complicated than that. According to the models accepted by most schools of thought, the material universe we live in is but one plane of reality." She paused again.
"Imagine, if you will, that Azeroth were flat, like a plate," she continued, making a circular motion over the railing. "And that there were other flat worlds stacked on top of it, forever and ever, or at least seeming that way. The space between these plates is the Twisting Nether. Do you follow?"

"And the ley lines line up with those upon these other plates?" Varyn asked.

"Well yes," Snowmane nodded. "Imagine now that these ley lines are a huge circulatory system. There are bigger, faster ones, like veins and arteries, and those are what we mainly refer to as ley lines, but they are also smaller, thinner ones--like capillaries--that permeate most of the world. That's why you can cast spells without actually having to stand right next to a major ley line."
"Now this system passes through all of these different worlds, intersecting in some points and passing right through. Where major ley lines intercept our plane, you have powerful magic spots, like the Well of Eternity, which I believe was probably a particularly huge ley line passing through our plane. That also explains why it was able to act as a portal for the Burning Legion. They jumped in as it passed through the nether and were able to enter our world."

"So then, these major ones rather pass through the worlds in lieu of crossing it as lines on a map may. That is the job of these capillary ones?"

"Well some of the major ones don't go straight through; they enter the plane in one direction, cross it for a bit, and then leave on the other side. That's what we're seeing here on Azeroth," Snowmane answered. "But yes. Another thing to note is that when you use a teleport spell, you are traveling through one of these lines embedded in Azeroth to another position on Azeroth," she continued, "but we are also capable of riding one of these major lines all the way to another plane. That's how the Dark Portal works. You travel along a larger ley line, out of our plane entirely, through the Twisting Nether, and out the other portal on Draenor. This is also why Draenor was turned into what we now call Outland when Ner'zhul opened too many portals and destabilized the plane. He forced the opening into the lines wider and wider until whole sections of the planet slipped in."

"Is what remains of Draenor held together by the remaining leylines? Or are they the landmasses which were furthest removed?" Varyn asked.

"That an interesting question and one I don't have an immediate answer for," Snowmane replied. "If I had to guess, I would wager that the portals that remain on Outland, like the Dark Portal, were probably tapping into slower, smaller lines, though that's just conjecture," she paused. "But another thing to note is that riding these ley lines between planes would be very, very dangerous. You might end up under an ocean, and that's assuming you make it to another plane at all. The line could very well terminate within the Twisting Nether, and then you're stranded in between dimensions in a space full of demons..." she nodded. "That's actually what ended up happening to Ner'zhul. The only reason the Dark Portal is safe is because of cooperation between Ner'zhul and Medivh on both ends of the portal."
"Anyway, my thesis is that it might be possible to move, sort of, halfway between planes, before jumping to another branch of the ley line and ending up somewhere else," she went on. "So far, we have the power to travel alone a line embedded within Azeroth, or to ride one to another plane, but I think that we might one day be able to ride a tributary line out of our own plane up into the main line, and then back down to another part of our own plane. We could use this method to teleport to one of our own moons, for example," she added excitedly. "Or discover other planets within our plane..." she paused. "Now granted, this would be incredibly dangerous. Even if you weren't killed by demons along the way, you could very well end up in empty space. But I think with enough experiment and theory, we could master it."

"Oh yes, it's very interesting," Snowmane answered, nodding. "My original thesis was one hundred and forty-two pages long, so I've skimmed and summarized most of the really technical stuff, but I really think I'm onto something."

"I appreciate it," Varyn informed her with a nod. "The possibilities of such a system being pursued and developed may lead to unheard of possibilities in exploration. It is of little wonder you are considered an archmage. Many of the greater aspects of arcane and magic as a whole remain largely beyond my ken as I am now, having lacked a sufficient educatio-"
Varyn cut himself off and flushed hotly, quickly looking away. "Ah...ah...yes," he said to the ocean where he kept his eyes riveted. "Ah, p-perhaps you might be interested in...in returning to...to Dalaran following this in o-order to pursue such e-efforts once...once this whole debacle has...ah...has been resolved.

Snowmane sighed. "I don't know what I want," she answered. "I mean, maybe I might. I could try writing my thesis again. I don't know though."

"Well...I really must insist such action be given serious consideration," Varyn replied gravely. "You have a great deal to offer academia merely by submitting such a thesis. The theory alone could prove revolutionary, and lead to Light alone knows new developments in arcane workings."

"Hm? Oh!" Varyn straightened and rose. He gestured for the higher rear deck of the vessel near where the wheel was settled. "Yes. Breakfast, of course. The cook should be willing to provide something. The hour is not so late as that."

"Excellent. Though I can't imagine food on a military ship is particularly tempting," Snowmane answered, heading towards where she felt the galley would be. "Still, I'm hungry enough at this point that I'll take what I can get."
