"Yes!" Max exclaimed, suddenly beginning to pace about the road. "Yes, go. That's...that's the question, innit? Yeah. Those crooks stole my compass, so that means I can't find that little witch who shot me anymore, doesn't it?" he growled gutterly.
"It's like the old saying goes. Life gives you lemons, kill the delivery boy," Cregga mused, laughing halfheartedly.
Her face fell even further when Maximilian failed to even register her words, merely continuing on as if she hadn't spoken. "Yeah. They have the compass. And that warlock!" The illusionist paused and looked up, eyes wide with fright. "Dammit! He knows about it too! And so does that...that priest! That means...Light! That means they're probably going to go after Razzamataz!
"Fel to that!" Max suddenly spat. "Like that's gonna happen. I'll just have to...have to head them off or...or something. They'll be going straight there. Or...or I'll have to get Master to move. That's it, that could work. It's...But we have to go now." Max sheathed his sword. "Come on!"
Cregga didn't move. The young witch had turned her eyes down to the hands she worried upon her lap.

It took the better part of three hours and entire two flipped tables worth of frustration, but in the end Wilhelm Meyer stood triumphant - also panting heavily with beads of sweat rolling down his face, but still mostly triumphant - with the tracking device held firmly in his hand. It was of simple design, a small octahedral crystal, murky white of color, trapped in a framing of burnished bronze and attached to a length of leather covered with runes.
On the aforementioned table - now standing properly upright once more - a piece of parchment was unrolled; it was a detailed map of the region, its borders covered now by a network of symbols bearing more than a passing resemblance to those on the tracker's cord. There was almost no blank spots left on a parchment - except a single lozenge, a perfect fit for the crystal.
The sorcerer outstretched his arm and uttered, "Show me."
Unhurriedly and in a fluid, smooth arcing motion, the crystal rose, hanging mid-air and pointing at one of the walls. A snarl-like grin appeared on Meyer's face. He dismissed the tracking session with an off-hand gesture, letting the device hang limp. Afterwards, he pressed the tip of the crystal against the inn's location on the map and rested it in the blank left for it. Ink softened around it and flowed to a point on a map - a small settlement.
"Gotcha," the warlock murmured smugly.
Fifteen minutes later, the room was cleaned up and Meyer was sleeping soundly.

"Yeah Cregga. What's the problem?"
The witch sighed. "Maximilian, listen...that warlock...what do you really think you can do against him? I mean..." she looked up to the haggard illusionist, "you saw how badly he planted his foot up our collective asses back there. Is it really smart to go fight him again?"
Max was very still. "Oh. I see. So you're not coming along, then."
"Max..."
But before she could say anymore, she was interrupted by Max exploding. "Well isn't that just fanfreakingtastic! Looks like it's Max, takin' care of beezness on his own again! What a surprise! No, no. Really Cregga," the illusionist waved off her attempt to speak. "I get it. No worries. It's not like I've ever had to go it alone before. I'll get by. I always get by, by the skin of my teeth in fact! And the rest rubbed off from getting roadhauled by the guards!
"Hey, troll," Max suddenly cried, rounding on the shadow priest. "How'd you like to help me out in a suicide mission? I promise a barrel of laughs as I get the crap beaten out of me, right up until you get bored and wander off to greener freaking pastures! Sounds fun?"

Neil had the good grace to look abashed, but not to keep silent. "Well...aheh...what...what exactly is to guard, anyway? Isn't it just to...ah...be there? I-I think the whole guarding thing is really overrated. I mean, who are we to deny people their...their civil liberties? Eh?"

Character:
Peter Brighthammer
Location:
Duskwood
A candle on a side table guttered wanly. Peter tapped the sharp tip of a quill upon the writing desk, his eyes distant and face blank with thought miles away from here. He sighed slowly and, producing a red bound book, he flipped to a new page and dipped the tip of the quill into an inkpot.
Today
, he began slowly,
I found Irene only to lose Elsa, then lost Irene only to find Elsa. I met the man who Irene tortured in the Stockades, I fought for my life, and I made a decision for my future in this world
.
Peter leaned back, staring at what he had written so far. He took in a deep, shuddering breath. His eyes firmed, his jaw set, and he leaned forward once more.
I decided to stop the sorcerer Razzamtaz
.
The quill flew across the pages in a storm of cramped handwriting, drying ink, and sand. The candle grew low on the table and, after a time, was snuffed out.

The old caretaker spun around as swiftly as his age would allow, which was to say, not very quickly, about to demand an explanation from the intruders.
Elsa Wolftongue
Darkshire, Duskwood
Elsa locked the door gently behind herself, eyeing her lodgings warily. The pickpocket silently approached the bed, yanking back the covers, merely to find it empty.
Dissatisfied, she quickly checked under the bed itself, in case any unwelcome visitors were hiding there instead. None were there either...
The human woman returned to her full height and paced over to the curtains, drawing them back momentarily, greeted with what might have been a pleasant view, were it any other place than Darkshire. Shaking her head, she bolted the window shut and redrew the curtains.
With one last glance around the room, the pickpocket scattered a few rusty caltrops in front of the door, planted an assortment of knives in various places, including one under her pillow, and extinguished the lamp, finally prepared to risk falling asleep.

When morning came, Peter awoke stiff and groggy, his body yet feeling the affects of last night's adventures. He groaned, struggling out of the sheets and stumbling to a nearby wash basin.
A half hour later found him descending the stairs heavily, where he grabbed a chair at a table to await the others arrival.

The warlock came down into the common room soon after Peter, treading lightly, enthusiastically, even. Wilhelm was immaculate; clean-shaven save for his goatee, wearing a shirt so fresh it looked as if it had just been ironed and put on and with not a hint of sleepiness in his mismatched eyes. He paused at the bar counter, placing his order - a glass of orange juice and an omelet with bacon - and then sauntered towards his younger companion, sitting down at their table.
On his neck the tracking crystal was hanging, lying in dormancy for the moment.
"I hope the morning is treating you well," Meyer said amicably.

"Correct. This will lead us to Irene and then turn into a collar for her and that disgusting little mutt both," the warlock nodded.
"She is not far from here - unsurprisingly - and has not moved overnight."

"See? He's game," Max said with a demonstrative gesture towards the troll.
The witch rolled her eyes. "Well, yeah.
He
didn't see the warlock who kicked our asses down one side of the shire then up the other. Hmph," she snorted derisively, crossing her arms and glaring. "Maybe show him the boot marks on your ass, or the ones on your wrists."
"Shut it Cregga!" Unconsciously, Max began to rub a wrist, only to catch himself a moment later and tear them away.
