Elsa shook her head, "only for about five years."

"Really?" Peter remarked in surprise. "Under the impression it was longer. N-not in any bad way, of course. Should clarify. But, you seemed to know way around the city very well. Or, at least, seemed confident about it," he told her.

"I've always had a good sense of direction," Elsa said simply, shrugging. "Why'd you say
not in a any bad way
?" The pickpocket's eyes regarded Peter inquisitively, without her usual suspicion.

Peter looked away, flushing slightly in embarrassment. "I...Don't know. Honestly. Seemed...insensitive, maybe. Not really sure, half the time. Thought it may come off as...slanderous? Wrong word, but you get my meaning?"

"No," Elsa replied flatly, proceeding to give her honest opinion, "it sounds like either you're trying to tell me I am really old or that I ought not know my way around because I don't have a respectable profession, like you do."

"I see..." Peter said, looking at the ground thoughtfully. "Not my intention, of course. But, understand what you mean." He sighed. "This is hard."

"What is?" Elsa asked, her expression becoming slightly puzzled.

"Just...Dealing. With people," he said. "Can be somewhat frustrating. Worthwhile, to be sure. Enjoy your company. But...make sit harder, at the same time. Don't want to offend you or anything. Not to say do want to for other people. But, you particularly so. It's...Have trouble expressing myself, the way I want to," he said, exasperated with himself.

"How come?" Elsa inquired, adopting a level tone, her face becoming expressionless.

The priest shrugged, pressing his back against one of the stone walls of the griffon roost. "Don't really know. Guess just aren't used to interacting with people outside specific circumstances. More factors. Underlying meanings, subtler things didn't necessarily look for when talking to others. Before now, that is."

Elsa nodded vaguely, giving Peter an unconvinced look. "I'm not great with people either," she confessed eventually, instead of questioning the priest further, "I can see the subtleties, but it doesn't make me any better at dealing with them."

Elsa looked offended, "
I am
direct, but I am pretty sure I can tell when someone is trying to either trick me or rob me..."
"And it's pretty obvious you get upset every time I take someone's purse, though you never admit that directly," she added, matter-of-factly.

"Have you ever had to work for money?" Elsa asked, the pickpocket having noted Peter looked unhappy but had no idea what to say.

The former monk rubbed his head. "Not as such, no. Wasn't really money at the monastery. Worked to eat, prayers, cleaning, duties. Those sorts of things, part of everyday life."

"Out here in the real world you don't get anywhere without money," Elsa stated, "either you're born into a family who has it and can afford to send you off someplace decent, like a monastery, or you know the right people to get you a decent job, one that doesn't involve working to death farming, soldiering or whoring yourself out for little pay..."
The pickpocket tilted her head, "wouldn't
you
resort to taking it, if those were the only choices available to
you
?"

"Surely," Peter began, more than a touch disturbed. "Surely, honest jobs other than that? Farming, doesn't seem so punishing. Apprenticeship, labourer, shopkeeper, something that hard work is enough for?" he asked, somewhat breathlessly. He had heard things in the wide world were bad, but for no other options?

"Farming? Not that bad?" Elsa looked at Peter incredulously, "you spend every single day doing back-breaking work until some lord or another comes to collect his taxes, then you're left with next to nothing and the only positive is you actually have enough food to feed your family..."
"And an apprenticeship costs money, money not everyone has, shopkeeping on the other hand requires people skills which I don't have either - unless you think deceit counts," she continued, with some vehemence, "as for labouring, that's just as bad as farming, only what money you do get is spent on food."
"That ruled me out for all three when I first came here - unless you think poaching, conning or
whoring
would be an improvement," the pickpocket concluded, saying the last of the three 'professions,' if they could be deemed as such, with obvious revulsion.
