Dear undercutters: please keep undercutting each other
Return to board index

I hear people complain a lot about undercutters. I keep hearing people say "don't undercut; you're only screwing yourself and other sellers".
Yesterday, I saw someone selling something like a dozen stacks of linen cloth at 1g50s each. I scooped up all of them and relisted at 4g each. They all sold. This is not the first time I've done something like this, either.
To all undercutters: please keep doing what you do.
To everyone complaining about undercutters: Keep crying so I can taste your tears. They taste like gold.

See, I make money off of low-listers on the AH too. However, I don't generally feel the need to try and generate anger by randomly posting it on forums and rubbing their face in it and being rude. You must be a real joy to know in real life, sir.

I was thinking the same thing, Elhonna, especially with today's QOTD.

I wildly undercut because my Server's economy sucks and I'm trying to help fix it.

Ditto. The cost of early profession mats and low level greens (not even transmogs) get ridiculous on some servers. I've gotten more than a few thank you notes in-game, some sarcastic and some genuine.

It's really hard for one person to "fix" an economy. The prices regulate themselves through supply and demand. If the prices are too high for the demand, they'll drop until people start buying. If there is more supply than demand, the prices drop and people compete to be the one who sells first. If the amount of gold in the economy goes up (like when an expansion comes out and questing and mobs start rewarding more gold), then the value of what a player makes per hour goes up, and so the value of mats that can be gathered in an hour go up accordingly. If there are very few people selling specific items, and the supply is limited, then the prices will stay high. If you are occasionally posting items at low prices, it won't affect the overall price level any more than a weekend sale will drop the average price of the sale item in the area. People will take advantage of the deal, or people will buy and resell them at market value. In order for your economy to improve, there need to be a constant supply of the goods at the lower price to reset the market value and that usually only happens when there are multiple suppliers flooding large quantities onto the AH.

Most people I know who post a lot of auctions use an auction house addon, which will automatically post below the past person who listed and a set amount- usually 1 copper less. Also, since we have limited bag space, it will often be that I post half of my ore of a specific type, then go refill and in the interim, someone else has posted, so the second half post below THAT price. I also only repost when my things expire every 48 hours, and I know that on some items you get undercut almost immediately. If your AH is moving fast, it's hard to guarantee that you will sell everything quickly, unless you majorly undercut. Basically there are two pricing tiers- one for people willing to wait, and one for people who want to sell right away.
@Ham- I agree that bothering people for undercutting is silly. If it's by a huge margin, you can always buy and resell. If it's by a decent margin, then they'll sell quickly and things will go back to normal. If it's often enough that there are always prices that far below yours, then you are posting too high yourself and should adjust.
The OP, however, said something along the lines of "I feed on your tears, " which I feel is excessive for the situation.

I sometimes undercut as well. Because I don't think that glyphs that have been in the game since WotLK should cost 500G (apparently the default glyph price for some people on my realm)
Not that glyphs sell really well, they didn't in WotLK, they didn't in Cata, and I doubt any non-new glyphs do in Mists, except minors with new effects. I think I still have some from the initial skilling on an alt in late WotLK, or when I accidentally created a glyph for an alt that the char already knew (one of the reasons I wrote Glyphed) but when I bother to list them, and there's just a few for 500G, I list them for 99, maybe 150 when I'm greedy. But guess what, they rarely sell. I guess those that list them for 500 are just preying on the occasional "need glyph NOW, no time to buy herbs and find a scribe friend"
And on a levelling character on another server with gathering professions, I just undercut wildly to even
sell
the stuff, because that's less of a bother than it filling up your inbox every 48h (the "storage cost")

Know your market and own it. My stuff sells at the price I list because I know and own that market. I don't care what others think the market price should be or what price they post at.

Something that annoys me: when people post up 40 or so single pieces of ore, leather, herb, cloth, etc, rather than stacks. I have to flip and scan through 4 pages of the AH to find the full stacks and gauge the range of what's currently available.
Why do they do this? There is no way I would buy 40 "stacks" of single pieces of ore even if it saved me a couple gold overall. It's not worth all the clicking.
This, this, a million times this.
Almost as annoying is that one jackass (there's exactly one on every realm) who insists on posting everything in stacks of five. Like... why five? Singles are understandable, full stacks are understandable, but five? WTF?

This posting style makes no sense for most mats, like ore and herbs and such, but for some items, selling in stacks wouldn't work. Certain quest items, for example, people might only need one at a time, or stacks of 5 or 10 or something (usually rep turn-ins, and the like), and certain old-school elemental mats are hard to come by and you only need 2 or 3 per recipe, so it makes sense to sell them as singles, or in stacks of 2, 3 or 5, because no one will ever need more than that, and might be discouraged from buying a stack of 20 or 50 when they need 2. Glyphs and gems also make much more sense to post as singles, as do enchanting scrolls and leg armors.

Because ore and herbs can be broken down in groups of five. As for cloth, some of them require 5 to make a bolt.
And not all foods, flasks, potions will sell in a full 10 or 20 stack, so you can go with the 5 to have a nice round number.

Sometimes the price point for 5 is more acceptable than 20. It's easier to shift them as people will more likely buy a few at a lower price than a lot at the same price. Also, things like herbs are milled in stacks of 5, so that is a reasonable group to sell.
If you can't stand buying 1 item at a time, get an auction addon that makes it easier for you.

Well I'd probably say use Auctionator, but that would be unfair =(. I dislike people who do this too, though I think there is some merit in having single pieces in case someone's like one piece off if like say...a stack's worth was posted.

Not everyone of us enjoys spending time on auction house trading, and just wants to clean out leftover mats and stuffs and maybe make a quick buck. if you buy and relist instead of use, i dont really care, i just want to get rid of the darn things and enjoy the game as i like to play the game, ie not in front of auction house.
I do get a lot of hate for undercutting, but i just reply to whispers/mail with "Hey, im just looking to clean out some stuff, once its sold you can play your ah monopoly in peace for a month until its time to sell off again".

Hehe. That sounds alright. I'll buy it =)...
What realm are you on?
