This coin, like all others, has two sides. OP presents us the first side: be a respectful, respectable player and people will treat you in kind. In other words, if you're going to join groups, do the other players a favor and know what you're doing. Otherwise, play solo content.
The other side? Toughen up, buttercup. It's a game. Either learn to play it the way the other 4/9/24/39 people have learned (by investing time and effort) or go play another game. No one wants to carry slackers who won't put in the time or effort to "L2P."

Hurtful words are not a game. They, in fact, have nothing to do with the game. They are a social interaction that really do hurt people.
On the contrary, I say, it IS just a game - don't get so mad and berate somebody for playing poorly or making a mistake.
It's a game
. And a game is not worth belittling other people over.
The real people who need to be reminded "it's a game" are the ones actually taking it outside the game and making personal attacks. Those are the players who need to understand that it's just a game, and keep it in the game, and keep it just as serious as a game - that is, a fun activity and not serious at all.

The problem is: the people that need to read this, will never bother to read this.
And honestly, $%^&ishness in an MMO is merely a continuation of, or "relief" from experiencing similar behavior in Real Life ("haha, people are mean to me, but here I can be an ass, too!") see Adam's mention of GIFT.
I'm not saying people can't learn to behave better while playing an MMO, but it doesn't help much if that learning does not translate into RL as well.

Well it never hurts to be nice. No need to continue perpetuating the issue, right? The problem is: the people that need to read this, will never bother to read this.

Well I can think of a few people who need to read it and have easy access to this thread =P.

People shouldn't take it too seriously over a gameThat's technically true, but that argument is often used to downplay unsocial behavior etc. in games.
Whether someone blocks your way into/out of a shop, drives way too slow on a one-lane street, chats with the cashier instead of paying quickly,
or
idles while in a dungeon group, pulls additional mobs which you could have skipped, needs on items they do not need, they are
wasting your time
. That's bad enough if it's unintended, but when they actually do that to annoy you, it is very irritating, to say the least. Maybe you hurried to the grocery store to have more time later or because you have an appointment, maybe you already ran that instance a dozen times without getting that piece of loot you wanted, it is time that could've been spent better, even by just "chilling".
And harsh language? Whether you hear it on the street or in a chat, it does not hurt you physically, but even if you don't get angry, it makes you "less happy" just because you had to endure it.
Granted, text in chat is easier to ignore for some people, and the game provides utility to completely hide someone's rambles, but it still affects you.

Sometimes, people are so stupid there is no way you can't use strong language ;)
But seriously, some people are intentionally stupid. Ninjas and trolls come to mind. I can understand why people would swear at that. A game is just a game, but it's taking up real life time - and what's more important than time?

It's the anonymity. No questions about it. People are able to say whatever they want without personal repercussions, and so they don't care. Maybe the extra distance of a virtual avatar makes it easier to disconnect the other person from being a real person.
I actually know someone IRL, who is fine in person but can get really nasty on the internet. And when we game together, that person will consistently speak to me in a way that is fairly nasty if I mess up, or am not picking up on a new game as quickly as they are. Not as nasty as they'd be to a stranger, but not the way they'd ever speak to me IRL. And regardless of how many times it is addressed, it keeps happening. It's like a switch goes off in people's heads as soon as they log in that says they don't have to be decent people anymore.
If we're talking about someone telling someone else that they need to fix things, that they need to do more DPS for their level, etc. then I agree that you should grow a thicker skin because if you're playing at a group activity the group has the right to comment on your performance. However, if we're talking about name-calling, profanity, etc. then I agree with the OP- you would never talk to someone that way IRL, and the only difference online is they can't get back at you in any meaningful way. If you are someone who is generally nice IRL, and generally nice online, then you are a nice person. If you are someone who is generally nice IRL, and a jerk on the internet, then you are a jerk with a good self-preservation instinct.
