Right, but if people ARE speaking out in the community against that kind of behavior, and people who are more neutral, or agree but don't think there's much that can be done are voicing opinions along the line of "Just put up with them, and grow thicker skin," it validates the people who are being pricks. I may not be able to surround them with the opinion that they should be better people, but I sure as heck make sure they hear it at least once. And if other people did the same, rather than blowing it off, maybe we'd get a little bit of the idea of community back.
Kind of a good example is the Off-Topic section of Wowhead. There are a lot less of us there than on the general boards, and we really do a lot of self-policing. There is a lot less tolerance for trolling, and definitely some communal agreement to try and weed it out through reports, not engaging in the same kinds of language back, etc. It's a small enough and regular enough forum board that we're able to do that, even in the face of the sea of anonymity that is the internet.

I personally love trolling people on wow. It's fantastic. And if I want to be a *!@#$%, then I have to take responsibility for being one.
To the OP while I agree with you, your best defense is to use the ignore and or report function.
To Lava, you dont have to take responsibility for being a troll on wow which is exactly why you do it. Don't kid yourself into thinking your online behavior isn't a problem. May you live long enough and grow wise enough to realize it.
hahaha... you obviously don't understand the concept of taking responsibility for something. You're talking about being held accountable.
Every soul, for every action they take, feels the consequences of their actions. If I make a 13 yr old kid feel bad about himself by trolling him, then I have to carry the weight of being that douchy.
Don't attempt to talk about things you don't understand.
I understand perfectly well. I also understand though you claim to carry the weight, I dont believe you truly do as you have zero reference to base that weight on.
I also understand from reading your posts following this one I quoted you are quite fond of over using generalizations ie: The problem with this generation...... and also you are a big fan of back peddling ie: I only troll the trolls.
Two wrongs dont make it right.

I don't see the inherent value of everyone being who they are when it's at the expense of other people. Rapists, serial killers, child abusers, thieves, etc. are all "being who they are." I don't think that once a person's expression crosses the line into attacking or infringing on another person it has all that much value. I'd rather people who want to be who they are, in a way that harms no one, be free to do so and those who want to attack, belittle and harm others to be restrained for the good of the rest of society. I agree that the nature of many people is to be a self centered, callous, mean-spirited, etc. I just think that it doesn't lessen the responsibility of those who aren't to try and steer society in a more productive direction.

Well I can think of a few people who need to read it and have easy access to this thread =P.But will they read
and
understand it? :P
Good point.
Also, a lot of the responses in the thread, for the most part, really disgust me. If this is a mindset where people think that it's okay to be verbally harmful to other people anywhere (even on a virtual front where such statements can be equally harmful), then I'm really at a loss for words.

But they wouldn't continue it if they weren't getting some kind of satisfaction from it, I think. It may not be a healthy kind of satisfaction, but I doubt they'd continue otherwise.
