Yes a lot of it is too clean, but this was the end of the first season.
The ending to TLA was the end of the series, and not to mention the end of a 100 year war. It had the Avatar fighting the "Phoenix King", the most powerful fire bender at the time as well as having Sozin's comet amping up his fire power, trying to stop him from conquering the entire world.
The whole city of Ba Sing Se was captured by the Fire Nation and it was full of soldiers and fire-benders. They had to force their way into the city as well as put up one hell of a fight.
The Equalists were mainly common folk who had couldn't bend. They might of had all the planes and mecha-suits that Sato created, but without those they were mostly powerless. And they weren't that hard to take down either, a couple fire blasts and the propellers were disabled in the planes, and the use of earth-bending could be used to stop the mecha-suits. As well as them tearing up the run-ways so planes couldn't take off anymore.
And once everyone found out that Amon was a fraud and was actually a bender, they all left him. Even his Lieutenant turned on him in the end. I'm sure the rest of the Equalists would have as well.
I'm guess what I'm just trying to say is that it was a much bigger, and more difficult enemy they had to fight in TLA than what they had to fight in LoK. You're trying to compare the ending of a season to the ending of an entire series. I think you would have better luck trying to compare the ending of LoK to the ending of the first season of TLA.
One thing I have been wondering though, shouldn't it possible for the Avatars to learn the other ways of bending?
It would have been useful for Aang and Korra to learn how to metal-bend, even more so now because of all the industrialized stuff. Maybe had Katara help Aang and Korra out so they could overcome blood-bending. I know Aang is able to redirect lightning, but wouldn't it be helpful for him to learned how to use it. The same with Korra being able to redirect it as well as use it.
They're the master of all 4 elements, they should be able to at least dabble in the sub-categories as well.

Maybe the price to pay for being a jack of all trades is being a master of none.
I've yet to see an avatar doing any of the sub-disciplines. Such as using waterbending to heal, or using earthbending to manipulate metal, or generating lightning, or even bloodbending.
From a writing point of view, this would serve to avoid making the avatar too powerful. As it is, the Avatar State is a complete gamebreaker. If you add the ability to simultaneously bend metal, shoot lightning, and self-heal, you get a god-mode-sue.
People need to have limitations, or the story gets boring quickly.
You do have a point about what you said regarding my comments on the ending. Its not really fair to compare the ending of a season to the ending of a show, so for fairness being fair, the season 1 ending of korra, was FAR BETTER than the season 1 ending of ATLA.
=D
Edit: I just remembered.............. Korra can use waterbending to heal, so maybe the avatars can, but for some reason they just don't.
For metalbending and bloodbending there's an excuse, those are new disciplines, but why would they not use lightning.......... you got me.

Well Korra has been shown to heal with water in several episodes.
As shown here, she is healing Bolin after a Pro-Bending match.
She was also shown to heal Iroh after saving him from the attacks on his ship. It also says Korra was able to get over the hold Amon had over her in, so I guess it can be done. But it might only be due to the fact that she is an expert water-bender to begin with. Since Aang wasn't, he might not have been able to.
Yeah took me a while to write and post this. I got distracted half way through >.<. I see you remembered she could heal.
But even then, it says the Katara taught Korra how to heal using her bending. She should have been able to teach Aang as well. And with that Toph/Lin should have been able to teach Aang/Korra how to metal-bend since they shown regular earth-benders how to metal-bend.
But yeah, that would be a little too powerful if the Avatar is able to do all of that. But Aang/Korra can energy-bend now, so they're still overly powered due to that. Same if they could also blood-bend others.
Maybe the price to pay for being a jack of all trades is being a master of none.
Well they seem to be the masters of the 4 basic elements. Just not of the more advanced techniques introduced later on in the series.
Oh, and it doesn't seem fair to air-benders because they don't really have an advance technique like all the others. But they get to have awesome mobility, such as flying and having those awesome air-scooters. And I love Tenzin's newer version: "displaying a previously unseen variant of Aang's air scooter technique - a "wheel" of air which not only allowed him to evade attacks but was powerful enough to deflect the claws of the mecha tanks". I also loved the way his son fought in the season finale: "Meelo is the only known airbender to use his own flatulence to airbend, even incorporating it in combat".
And yeah, I'm glad you agree with me on that last part :D.
So many spoiler tags O_O.

We haven't really seen enough air benders to make that call.
Some of them might be capable of trapping you in a bubble of no air for all we know...

Oh, and it doesn't seem fair to air-benders because they don't really have an advance technique like all the others.
You seem to forget that Airbenders
CAN FLY!
That right there is their specialty. True, they need a !@#$%^, but still, once you attach a couple of paper wings on your back, all you do is airbend to remain in the air for prolonged periods of time. Even without a !@#$%^, airbenders can still move incredibly fast (Super-speed) and jump/fall from great heights due to using air-control to increase/decrease their speed.
So that freedom of movement is their advanced technique. Maybe not as fancy as shooting lightning, or bending metal, but as TVtropes says "Boring but practical".
As for any other advanced technique you already mentioned one.
I also loved the way his son fought in the season finale: "Meelo is the only known airbender to use his own flatulence to airbend, even incorporating it in combat".
And we shall call it "Fartbending"
And I love Tenzin's newer version: "displaying a previously unseen variant of Aang's air scooter technique - a "wheel" of air which not only allowed him to evade attacks but was powerful enough to deflect the claws of the mecha tanks".
You mean his
Air Cycle?
=D glad you didn't missed it. Yep, that's some air-bending mastery right there.
and here is another thing to consider:
Amon never really learned Energybending to remove a person's bending. Its quite clear that he used bloodbending mixed with chi blocking because when Aang used Energybending on Ozai, there was a long of glowing involved, and when he used it again on Yakone, again his hands and eyes glowed.
When he used it a third time on Korra, the same thing happened, hands and eyes glowing and ditto for korra restoring Lin her bending.
When Amon de-bended others, there never was any glow. That always bugged me, how was he energybending but no glow involved........... Now we know why.
So many spoiler tags O_O.
Indeed. Can't wait for OZ and Patty to catch up so we can dispose of these.

Yeah I guess you got a point there Atik, but Aang mostly did air-bending in TLA. The best thing he did was make the air scooter, but we haven't seen much else from him. And in LoK his son improved it.
As for them trapping them in an air-less bubble, I kinda doubt that'll happen as they seem like a peaceful race and wouldn't condone doing something like that. Unless there was a rogue group of air-benders that did whatever they want.
Oh, and it doesn't seem fair to air-benders because they don't really have an advance technique like all the others.

I didn't forget. If you only put in the very next sentence you would know I pointed that out >.>

And Aang was able to fly without his staff or wings, but that might only be due to him going into the Avatar State, but he was still able to do it.
Edit: Had to add in a spoiler. >.<

Well considering the sheer number of Fire Bender corpses around the great Monk, and at the height of the Comet, we know that Air Benders do have some heavy hitting attacks.

There's also the fact that we've never seen what a true Airbender Master is capable of.
Aang while talented and powerful, still wasn't up in the same league as Gyatso, and the other 4 unnamed Master Monks in his temple. And Tenzin while powerful also has been self-taught most of his life.
I seem to recall from the episode "The Mechanist" that true Airbending Masters could fly even without $%^&*!s.
What the hell? we can't say G-L-I-D-E-R-S?
why? that's not a swear word. Seriously, the censorship on this site can get quite silly at times.

Question time. If you were born into the avatar universe what nation would you be born want to be born into. Also being born in to a nation may not mean being a bender remember that. Me, Air bender, I want to fing fly. Also sky bison you get one. But to get the title of air bending master you have to make your own air bending technique, As in aangs was the air scooter.
Actually, to be a master you have to learn all 36 tiers of airbending. But in Aangs case he only had 35, but since he invented the air scooter, they made him a master anyway.
By the time of the Air Nomad Genocide, Aang was already an airbending master, the youngest in history. Aang achieved his mastery tattoos when he mastered thirty-five of the thirty-six tiers of airbending and invented a new airbending technique, the "air scooter".
As for which nation, I would probably say the Earth Kingdom.

Gone
This is embarressing, but I almost teared up during the opening of Legend of Korra when Tenzin said that Aang died. And then again when Katara told Korra how her brother and many of their friends were gone now.
well, death is a natural part of life, and at some point we all gotta die of old age. Furthermore, in order for a new avatar to be born the other one has to die, so if Korra is around, by logic Aang must have been gone.
a timeskip of 70 years is a loooooong long time.
No !@#$ lol, but its still sad seeing the characters you fell in love with gone. And im a little suprised Aang died at only 66 years old, Hell I was hoping he would last as long as Boomie did. But his time in teh ice took its toll on him.

An airbender is declared a Master once he/she has fully mastered the 36 tiers of airbending and/or when he/she creates a new airbending technique; Aang was the exception in this case, since he mastered only 35 tiers and made a new move.
Source
It says when they mastered all tiers
and/or
they create a new technique. Since Aang had already made the technique as well as mastering 35 of the tiers, they let him be the exception and get his tattoos 6 years early. He may also be the only exception as they never mentioned anyone else.
As for why choosing earth, I'm not really sure. I just see my self as being a part of the Earth Kingdom culture more than the others.

Well Aang got his tattoos before becoming the Avatar. He was told he was the Avatar when he was 12, 4 years before most people are told. But he had become a master before this as you can see in the flashbacks he already had his tattoos.
As for them getting tatoos, I believe all airbending masters get their tattoos. Avatars can master it, but they don't have to get tattoos since they aren't from their nation. But both Aang and
Yangchen
were Air Nomads and both had their tattoos since they were airbending masters coming from the Air Nomad culture. The only difference is that for female masters, they only shave off the front half of the head and leave the hair growing in the back.
I mean, the other Avatars could get tattoos but they don't have too. And I'm sure the airbending masters don't have to get tattooed, but since it is a part of their culture they do it anyway.

Normally they do. Avatars tend to live long lives, Avatar Kyoshy lived 230 years.
However, remember that Aang spent a long time (100 years) in the avatar state, and that taxed his body tremendously. The longer you remain in the Avatar State, the shorter your life will be, that's one of the reasons its meant to be used occasionally and not to solve all your problems. Chronologically Aang lived 166 years, which is not so bad at all.
Question time. If you were born into the avatar universe what nation would you be born want to be born into. Also being born in to a nation may not mean being a bender remember that.
Me, I'd be a waterbender.
Personally, I think waterbending is the strongest element of them all, because it can do almost everything the other elements can, plus stuff the others can't.
Earthbenders can crush their foes with giant boulders you say? Waterbenders can freeze water, and then crush their foes with giant ice boulders too. Not only they can manipulate water, they can control its temperature, freezing or boiling it at a whim, thus its not hard at all to trap your foes in ice, skewer them with ice spikes, or crush them with ice boulders.
Firebenders can burn you? no problem, just as you can freeze water, you can also boil it (after all, waterbenders can turn solid ice into liquid meaning they can heat water too) a jet of boiling water can have as much a devastating effect on your enemies as a stream of fire will.
Airbenders can create gusts of wind you say? waterbenders can boil the water to make it vapor, and move said vapor as if it was airbending.
Then there's all the stuff you can do with waterbending that you can't do with the other elements.
A: Healing, any wounds you sustain can be quickly mended.
B: Plant-control. The benders of the foggy swamp were able to control the vines by bending the water inside of them.
C: On several occasions Aang and Katara have used Water-swords. Using waterbending to cut stuff by moving it really fast like a water-jet cutter. (Example: In the drill, or when Katara busted herself out of prison on The Runaway) So waterbending can also be used as a cutting weapon, as a concussive weapon (Water-whip) as a defensive stance (Water Octopus used by katara on Season 2 finale)
and that's not even going to the gamebreaking power of bloodbending.
In short, Waterbending is by far the most dangerous of the four elements, and the one I'd pick if I lived on the avatar universe.
