Edit: Oh sure, NOW it works : /
Edit: Why does this (colored link with icon) work on this page and not on another? I'm simply mousing over the "Links" dropdown, choosing "Item" and then inputting "128422" in the box. Works perfectly here, but on
this page
, it only displays (Item #128422), with working link and mouseover tooltip, but not colored, and with no icon.
And yet, many other people have colored icon links on that page. I have noticed, however, that every working link on that page links to "ptr.wowhead..." and all of the non-working ones point to "
www.wowhead
..." I can find no way to duplicate those links, and it still doesn't explain why mine works here and not there.
Edit: Finally figured it out. I changed my link from "item=128422" to "item=128422 domain=ptr" (with those quotes being brackets). Though now I am seeing some links on that page with color and icons that point to "www..." instead of "ptr..."
Whatever, I'm just going to assume it has something to do with Wowhead still editing their database whilst I was in the midst of trying to figure all this out, and/or things working differently on news pages than they do on database item pages (which is screwy), and be done with it :)

Hey,
Yeah... if it's on the PTR you need to specify the domain. We also moved the PTR data to LIVE today so that could be some of the trouble you experienced as well.
Sorry for the confusion!

I was experiencing something similar to Spiderlips above. I tested on this page and it worked just fine, but not on other pages. My problem though was trying to do this as a reply to someone else's post. Maybe I missed something somewhere, but it appears this doesn't work in replies.
Cheers.

Are you referring to comment replies or forum replies? Do you have an example?
Keep in mind, linking to a database item will often show (item=######) in the preview until you post it and the page captures the data being pointed to.

Same here.
Golden Eagle

Don't include http:// and it'll work fine.
Example
http: gets stripped from URLs and the remaining // breaks the BBCode. In a perfect world it would strip the // as well but, well, it's not perfect. But at least you know what to do to fix the issue now.

I'm trying over and over to link something in a wowhead guide. It doen't have the convenient dropdown links button this one has (replying to a comment). I've tried following what appears to be greek (to me) in the comments but honestly, I don't know coding or html or ... whatever. I can manage to link the item by doing the
Salmon Lure
, but I can't get the icon to appear next to it.
I get ^ that
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? Sorry for caps, but I've been trying to decipher this for the last hour or so and can't make heads or tails of it.
so I'm trying again...
Salmon Lure
... nope. I typed (bracket)item=133710(bracket)
Okay. when I typed the above, and hit save, it came out as just (item#133710). It took 2 refreshes of the page to finally work for me. HOWEVER... I still can't get the icon below to work (unless I have to refresh the page more)
I tried it with just the icon too: so... again, what am I doing wrong?

If you want the item to link with its own icon, use \
Double Jump
=
Double Jump
.
If you want the link without the icon, use \
Double Jump\
=
Double Jump
If you want the icon without the link, use \\ =
Note that to get the icon code, you have to navigate to the appropriate page and click on the image icon. That will bring up a in-page popup and you can copy that code.

It takes a full refresh for tooltips to function properly unless the item/spell/etc was already linked in the same thread you're adding it too. Hopefully SquireKel's post above helps. She has a wonderful guide about
making
guides here:

I refreshed several times, I followed the info for linking icons, and I got the text above (2 posts up). Obviously I'm doing *something* wrong, but I can't see it. This is the text: What am I missing / adding to make it not work? I tried it with both upper case "I" and lower case "i" for "Inv_..." but there's no difference. I made sure of spelling (copied and pasted from named icon), and I still just don't see what I'm doing wrong.

I think using this type of BBCode requires you to be staff, unless you're using it in a guide. Sorry for not realizing that earlier miniwidge.(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##Sas148##DELIM##

Okay thanks for that. As you can see, I edited my comments quite a few times trying to make that work. Glad it wasn't me.

Yea I was killing myself trying all these different ways to post it over an hour. I then read your comment here and saw you just needed to refresh you page and then it finally worked.

Sorry it wasn't clear during the process. The tooltips are loaded upon page load so when you enter bbcode, the preview doesn't yet have the data to display so it shows with the ( )'s. One exception to this is if you're linking a bbcode already used on the page, in which case it already has the data to display.
