So its been said before that I live pretty close to NYC. Its just a train ride in, and then subway around everywhere.
So when a
fellow moderator
has a night off in the city, its the least I can do to meet up and take the guy out for a crazy dinner. I hadn't been back to the restaurant in over a year. So I went a bit crazy with ordering, but as Squish well tell you, there wasn't a single bite left on any plate by the time we were done.
Dinner Pics
The Restaurant - Café Espanol
If anyone is ever around NYC or CT and wants to meet up, just let me know. Squish will give me a good reference I believe ^_^
Cheers,

I can see why you're a little stressed. After spending $100 for dinner for only 2 people, I would be as well.
On another note, I wouldn't mind coming to hang out. But sadly I live down in Florida and I doubt I would be up near there anytime soon.

In NYC, that's a fairly normal dinner check. Dessert, Coffee, a meal, appetizer- totally easy to come to $45 a person. Heck, I think we spent more than that per person at Red Lobster last weekend when I took my parents out for their birthdays.

Yeah I can see big cities like that can have places that are expensive. Of course I live in a little rural town and the fanciest place I've been to is Red Lobster :(, but of course for my parents, my sister and myself we only spent $100-$120. But we get 1 appetizer, 4 entrees and maybe desert, but no alcohol or anything too fancy.

93 bucks? 93 bucks? 15 bucks gratuity? WTF! Who could afford that? If I ever visit NY, I'll pack lunch.

On an 85 dollar check, $15-17 dollars is a pretty normal tip. At least here it is.

An 85 dollar check? WTF is that.
I take my kids out to gormet buffett at the
best restaurant
in town here for 15 bucks a person. That's 75 bucks for 5 people.... FIVE PEOPLE, and that's if I bring my brother. I'll offer 7-8 bucks for about 10% gratuity. We barely top 80 for the 5 of us, and I'm more likely to order a kids meal for the 3 year old than I am a 15 dollar buffet.

Well...servers pay taxes based on an average of 12-15% tips, so they pay taxes on money you don't tip them if you pay less than that. Also, they have to tip out the bar and the busboys at nice restaurants. 10% is considered a pretty bad tip most places.
Also, waitstaff tends to make like $3-4/hour salary before tips, and count on the tips to even it out to a decent living.

I'm not going to go into the purpose of tips, or their intention. Tipping, in my case, is not automatic. I don't tip if it isn't worth it. I'm not going to pay a person more than 10 bucks for an hour long meal (that would be a long meal), on top of their wages. Everyone pays taxes, and we don't automatically pay them extra, and then pay them extra on top of the extra for the taxes they pay on the extra. That's getting silly. I'll pay them for the work that they do, which I already do when I pay the restaurant for the service, who then pays the waitress, which is a part of the reason why eating at a restaurant is so expensive. I tip if the service is exceptional.

If I told you how big of a portion of my payment would that bill cut off, I think even MyTie would start to cry lol.

They pay the waitress like 4 bucks an hour. They do that because the industry is based on tipping. If they paid them a full wage, they'd just add the pricing on to the menu. The purpose of making it optional is to ensure good service. Unfortunately, there are people who take advantage of the system and don't tip, or don't tip the accepted amount, regardless of the service being fine.
EDIT: Luckily, enough people tip more than 15% that the servers end up doing fine. It's kind of a welfare system where good tippers cover what should be paid by people who are cheap and/or inconsiderate.

Ugh. I'd rather spend 100 bucks on groceries and learn how to cook that food myself.
Hat, if you ever come to western oregon, you'll have to come over to my house for some quality home-cooked food. It'll be free for ya, but cost me somewhere around 2 dollars a plate, and would taste delicious.
