I have actually never played WoW on Windows... I got rid of Windows and began exclusively using Kubuntu Linux (6.06) about a year ago, and started playing WoW about six months ago. So my entire WoW experience has been via Wine on Linux.
I have honestly had little to no problems with it. Very smooth framerate, little to no lag (my boyfriend, who uses Windows, experiences lag far more than I do for some reason), the experience has just been very smooth overall. Really the only gripes I have are the freezeup on exit (though it's easy to workaround with a script), and the fact that this most recent patch messed up the sound a bit, which previously worked 100% fine.
But yeah, other than those two issues, my experience with WoW and Linux/Wine has been very, very positive. If you run a 'buntu there are tons of help guides to help you get set up and started. I do know that different computers will produce different results but mine has worked very well.
Obviously WoW native on Linux would be very nice ^^ But I don't see it coming and I'm fine with that.

I think you would agree with me that having an independent hardware abstraction layer similar to DirectX but not married to Microsoft would invalidate the need to force an entire technological populous into one OS or another, and allow us all the freedom of choice. The main reason I uphold the ideals of the Linux and open source community in general is because they, more than any other, have the means and will to forge ahead with such concepts and empower us with the ability to choose.
At that point, game devs could code for that abstraction layer and not worry even 1/10th as much about what OS they need to code for. Hopefully someday...

I'll definitely agree with the problems of open source development and standardization. Complete freedom breeds diversity and creativity, but can often hinder mainstream acceptance. My line of thinking in resting my hopes on Google's initiatives is that while they embrace the open source community, they would spearhead (intentional or not) a Linux distro of their own that would become the standard, thus allowing for the standardization of abstraction layers, essential core components, and possibly even SDKs (ie something like Eclipse but hopefully with all the strengths of .Net). A pipe dream, probably, but one can hope.

From their FAQ:
Q: What's up with SDL 2.0? Can I help?
A: SDL 2.0 is on indefinite hold, as the people working on it started families. Work is progressing well on SDL 1.2 and 1.3, which are stable and development versions of SDL respectively, where incremental improvements to the library are being made.
Their list of games is pretty extensive, though. Let's hope it's good enough of a DirectX equivalent to attract mainstream dev attention.

It was an on-topic post, so there's really nothing wrong with it.
