QOTD Thread #332- Do you think that people should keep cats outdoors?

Probably the idea of AI, where the robots live on after all of the flesh bags killed each other off.
Yeah, that's a good call. I was considering it as well, but the part of AI where humans still lived felt a bit off to make the comparison. The element of humanity wiping itself and leaving this planet to the AI is a good one.
And I should read 1984. :V

#201- What sense would you choose to live without, if you had to lose one? (From Edan)

Probably smell, if there would be no effects on taste as a result.

There would. I'm fairly sure that if you can't smell anything, taste is affected.

I do not really have the sense of smell due to my chronical sinusitis. Not that the thingies in my nose wouldn't work, it's just they are stuck 24/7. So yeah, I sorta got used to it, even though it's a terrible thing to get used to. Sigh..
Probably smell, if there would be no effects on taste as a result.

Oh it is. Greatly. I can't distinguish a wide range of spices and cheese types for instance.

I know that, I am saying
if
there were no effects. My heart could go on without smell, but not without taste. :( If not all senses are distinct then you can't really lose
one
without affecting others in the case of taste and smell. The question's kind of pre-loaded if by choosing one you functionally lose two, hence why I ignored smell as a factor of taste. ;)

I agree with Patty. If sense of smell wouldn't affect taste, definitely smell. If the consequences were tehre, I would choose sight. But even just thinking about not being to see breaks my heart :(

I don't know that the fact that taste and smell are related makes it loaded- even losing both of those doesn't impact your ability to perform day to day functions- just your enjoyment of them. Losing sight or hearing impacts whether you can drive, your level of autonomy, what jobs you can hold, etc. If smell and taste WEREN't related, I think it might be a less interesting questions because everyone would just choose smell as the least impactful sense.

All 5 senses are in some way beneficial to our survival, but overall I'd say taste and smell are the least so.
Choosing between the two is quite difficult, especially since both would greatly hinder my enjoyment of food. That said, one of the by-products of my high-protein diet is that I produce particularly rancid flatulence, so I'll go without smell.

Smell/olfactory, without question.

Smell if it didn't interfere with my ability to taste. If not I'd rather lose just taste. But I mean, it depends what we're calling a sense.
Maybe pain? Would if effect the rest of my nervous system? I know there are problems associated with not feeling pain but if smell messed with my taste than I'd prefer to lose the ability to feel pain.

If I was younger, I'd say hearing; I mean sure sub-titles are standard things to entertainment now a days, but would be a lot harder to learn to read lips and sign language at my age now.
I wouldn't give up touch; while you lose out on pain which isn't a good thing, since without pain you have no idea if you just put your hand down on a burning hot piece of metal or the like, ruining your limb cause you didn't realize you had to pull it back and of course, you miss out on all the other good stuff about touch.
Probably taste; at least if you kept smell, you'd still know the food was good.

Taste, probably. I think I could do without it more easily than I could my other senses.

Probably taste, in all honesty.

As much as I'd hate it, taste. Even smell is probably more important, let alone the other senses.
