These two would also suffice.

I once wrote a serious article positing that Ian Hislop, Stephen Fry, Stephen Hawking or John Berger would be better heads of state than the queen (if they were elected of course).
I don't think Stephen Fry would be very popular amongst the Polish or Catholics. Especially not amongst Polish Catholics. Though, actually, a world leadership council comprised of QI panelists would work wonderfully.

198- How late do places stay open where you live?
Post by

Honestly, most of the restaurants I grew up eating at now all close at 3 in the afternoon because they can't find people to work there.
Fast food stays open til about midnight.

Where I'm from (Sydney), there's a very large proportion of businesses open 24/7. Convenience stores, bars/pubs, the casino, petrol stations, fast food outlets and countless other businesses. Infuriatingly, though, the train network closes down from 1am to 5am.
Where I grew up (Sydney north metropolitan area) there are a few 24 hour petrol stations, gyms and department stores. All of the Mcdonalds that have drive-thrus are open 24/7 as well. Apart from that, most pubs/clubs close around 3-5am, restaurants stop taking new customers around 9-10pm, and most shops close around 5-7pm (except Thursdays when they are open to 9pm, and Sundays when they are usually only open to 4pm). Oh, and most of the supermarkets are open til midnight.
Where I live now is a small resort island with a staff population of around 1500 and a guest population of maybe 1100 (both of those figures are lower in the wet season). The general store closes at 8pm, the convenience store closes at 9pm, restaurants stop taking new customers at 9pm and the closing times for the bars and nightclub vary from midnight to 5am depending on what day of the week it is. So it's far quieter than what I'm used to.

I have some places that are open 24 hours a day. Mostly grocery. Otherwise, it's usually from 9-6 or similar (Kent, WA)

Quite similar to donny I suppose, except I live in Greater London.
Local stores close around 8pm, there are a few "24 hour" supermarkets within a few miles, but they do close on Sundays. There's one (Irish) pub fairly close that pulls the same trick as pikey describes, it's meant to shut at about 1 but the bartender closes the doors and drinks with the sots until about 3-4 in the morning. The two locals close at 10 and 11:30 respectively though. Considering I've had stuff thrown at me and threatened and people have been murdered nearby, the pubs are actually pretty safe for the area. The tubes shut down anywhere from 12 to 1 in Central London, but then 24 hour buses start running (takes triple the time to get home though). Otherwise you're stuck with a £50 cab fare. Tubes start again at about 6 in the morning. Surprisingly, quite a few places in Central shut down at midnight, probably in order for their staff to be able to make the last train home. Clubs start getting more exclusive around that time, increasing charges and whatnot. There's one, black and white, that charges £20 and houses people until the first tube starts running at the local station. Another, café 1001, shuts doors and pulls a similar trick.
In Luton, the mall closes at around 5-6pm, which is inconvenient (used to being able to go to a supermarket until whenever at home). The local stores and fast food places stay open until 11, so I won't be completely out if I don't have food. Once there was a march by the EDL (far right anti-Muslim organisation started in Luton) and I forgot to get groceries - all the shops in my area shut down and the place was plastered with police. Didn't eat until 10pm that night. A few clubs are open until 2am and one gay bar seems to be open from dusk to dawn, even on Sundays. Laundry place is open until 7 IIRC. I've also missed meals before and went stalking, think there may be a fast food place open past 2 in the town centre. I used to go to a club in Acton too, the fast food places had a symbiotic relationship with it: when the club closed down (at 3am), people didn't mill about because there were fast food places open directly opposite and then they'd catch a taxi or get the night bus contentedly. Didn't ever figure out if they stayed open for the entire time or if they had two shifts (day and morning).

In the Orem/Provo area, most things open at about 9 and close at about 10ish. Theaters usually stay open until around 1, and many, many restaurants are open 24/7. Gas stations run 24/7, as do a few convenience stores and the Walmarts.

This, pretty much. I believe most businesses around here are closed by 5-6pm, though. There's a gas station in town that's open 24/7, I think. I can't answer about stores in nearby towns, minus the few 24/7 ones.

As a current Sydney-sider, I'd challenge that statement. It's nowhere near a 'very large proportion' - it's bugger all. The ones listed, they're generally open, but there are huge numbers of other stores (retail clothing, department stores, cafes, restaurants, book stores, music stores, etc.) that close at 5-6pm, 9-10pm, midnight, even in the heart of the city.
Generally, retail stores close at around 6pm. One night a week, most stores stay open later until about 9-10pm. We've got a few 24/7 department stores, but they're far and few in between.

As a percentage of all businesses in Sydney, yes it's small. But even that low percentage is very high relative to most places in the world, and without a doubt it outstrips anywhere else in Australia by a long shot. Even Melbourne and Brisbane.
This is especially true with regard to the "few" department stores. I don't think there's a 24/7 department store in all of Queensland, for example.
Also keep in mind the number of 24/7 convenience stores. Each suburb has at least one or two, and there would be well over 100 in the city and inner suburbs.

Yeah, but if you're looking at places which stay open late, Melbourne has a much more active trade running at night than Sydney does. I think on a 'total hours opened' basis, Melbourne would be the king across Australia.

I certainly wasn't aware of anything like that, that's interesting.

We have two fast food places that stay open 24 hours here, well the restaurant portion is open from 6am to 11pm then drive threw is open 24 hours. Have the standard bars that close at closing time. We have a Mac's that is open 24 hours(gas and convenience store). Most of the other restaurants close between 9-11. We have Wal-Mart that closes at 10, Shoppers Drug Mart that closes at 11-12 depending on the day, and Liquidation World and No Frill's Grocery store that both close at 9. Most of the other shops close between 5-10pm.
