QOTD Thread #332- Do you think that people should keep cats outdoors?

I refuse to be a brand sheep. Brand names are just excuses to squeeze you out of your hard earned money and most of the time, other than the name, there is ZERO difference from less famous brands.
Like shoes, I've never owned a nike shoe on my life, why? those nike stripes make the shoe cost up to
FIVE TIMES MORE
than other brands. My RS-21 shoes are cheaper, just as comfortable, and last for years before I have to repair them or replace them. Why on earth would I pay 5x more money just to have a silly looking stripe on it?

@Rank- I agree for many things, but for food it's a matter of a specific recipe, and for electronics it's a matter of patented innovations and designs that could be functionally superior. Do you think that there a certain exceptions to the brand name = non brand name rule?

well, yes, as with everything in life, there are exceptions to the norm.
With electronic devices, there's a saying here that goes "Lo barato, sale caro" (Roughly it means "what's cheaper, eventually will cost you more" because they tend to break down quickly.
I remember my dad bought a VHS a long time ago, and rather than buy it from a known brand, he bought a really cheap Brazilian knockoff brand. Whereas my uncle bought a Phillips one.
Ours lasted a grand total of 2 years before it was busted and refused to work ever again (and since it was brazillian, there wasn't any spare parts to fix it). My uncle's VHS even to this day still works.
So yes, there are exceptions, but those are smaller, by far and large, most stuff that has a brand attached to it is just an excuse to charge more money, and I'll give some examples.
Clothing, a Prada (is that the right name?) purse can cost you an eye socket and a half, and yet (in my opnion, since I'm not an expert on fashion or women's accesories) they look U-G-L-Y as sin. There's this venezuelan brand called Parafina, that are much cheaper, look really nice, and are very VERY resillient (my cat bianca tried to scratch one, and ended up hurting her claws)
Food: A McBurger can cost up to 70.000 bolivares, and yet it tastes terrible, or at best it tastes average. Whereas a burger at the burger post Enrico's next to my place, costs 20.000 bolivares, is twice as big as a Whooper, and is absolutely TASTY as no other burger can be.
Overall, the examples where Generic > Brand far outweigh the examples where Brand > Generic.
One better example were Brand DEFINITELY matters is in cars. Those darned Germans and Japanese make cars like nobody else can.

Do you prefer brand names?
I can't say I particularly care. It depends on the brand name itself.

For clothing, sometimes. For electronics, yes.

I'm poor, so I just go for whatever costs less.
Unless it's made by Apple. I wouldn't touch anything from them with a ten foot poll. Or anything based off something they made, for that matter.

Depends on the brand. Sometimes name brand is the best, sometimes generic is actually better. For instance, great value bacon bits taste better than oscar myer, but Classico Alfredo is light years ahead of great value. So... it depends. All other things equal, I'd take the generic due to price.

#126- Do you prefer brand names? Are you someone who buys mostly brand names, or none at all? Are there certain things where the brand names are just totally superior, and certain things where you don't care?
Mostly brand names for things like food and electronics and the like. For clothing, I don't really care, but I find Giordano to be quite comfortable and relatively good value over this side of the world, so I end up buying a 'brand name', but only because it meets the characteristics I'm looking for.
Rank - in Australia, it's almost always a toss-up between European or Japanese cars. US cars don't really come into the equation. The Chinese are starting to push really heavily - when you get a car (e.g. Chery or Great Wall) that's literally half the price of a competitor, I'm sure some people feel tempted, but I still can't get past the 0-star safety ratings of not too many years ago.

Food: Cheap stuff. Don't care enough.
Clothes: Doesn't really matter, what ever I like or has the best quality. Shoes will probably only be Nike Janoskis from now on, most comfortable shoes ever made.
Sport things: Quality stuff. Seriously riding a good pair of skiis makes it so much more enjoyable. Same goes for boards and bikes.

Really just depends on the product. But most often? Generic brand buyer.

I go out of the way to avoid certain brands. Coca Cola and Nestlé being the chief among them. McDonalds being another. Food: most commonly eat oats and vegetarian sausages, where they taste pretty much identical and I go for the cheapest.
I rarely buy my own clothing but try to avoid stuff made by kids. Electronics I rarely buy anyway.
The one time I explicitly search for a brand is in alcohol, where I can distinguish by taste. Strongbow, Kopparberg, Baileys, are all sought for.

Brand Names FTW?

I value quality. If a brand product is of higher quality, I'll buy a brand product.

Haha, no problem... I really like them with cottage cheese. Guess I just have an unrefined palate :p.

#127- How did you meet your best friend?
I have a few of them.
And met them all on the Lore & Roleplay forum here on Wowhead.

When I repeated the fifth grade, I met the two people who would become my best friends, and near siblings for life. Luis and Maria.
Nothing really fancy, Luis and I got along due to our love for videogames, and as for Maria, it started with her tutoring me on math (I really hate math, joke's on me since I'm an accountant today T_T) and before you knew it, us 3 were like the three musketeers.
Stayed together in junior high, senior high, college, and adulthood =P Luis was my bestman at my wedding, and Maria is the godmother of my child.

I wouldn't say I have a "best friend", really. Pretty much everyone I know annoys me in some way, so I don't tolerate them more than I have to/want to.
