What do you think about Q(ueer) and I(ntergender)? Do you think some people feel as uncomfortable in a human skin as they are in a skin of the wrong gender?

Is this a Q&A for Milayu, or for anyone in the LGBT community?

I have a friend who's at the very beginning stages of the process of becoming transsexual. She and I have had several conversations about how to size clothing, how to apply make-up, how to pick out what your colors are, the value of underwire, etc. What were some of the things (because I believe you said you went through the MTF transition), if there were any, that you maybe didn't know that you didn't know about the day to day ins and outs of being a woman? Things that maybe I wouldn't think about even discussing because they're so automatic for me? She's done all of her research on the specific procedures, legal and preparatory requirements, etc. But she and I tend to discuss the little things that are more female specific that transition specific, and I'd like to help with whatever I can.

^ I'm guessing you were going over identitification requirements? There was a minor furore about the Canadian government's refusal to acknowledge transsexual people on passports I think.
Other than that I have no clue about women or womanly stuff other than it probably being a massive relief not to have to deal with menstruation and it probably being a massive pain to have to deal with bigotry.
Oh, I remember a video with a transgender or transsexual person that said that the viewers that asked them "what they were" were silly since they knew exactly who they were and nobody else had asked before. They had a red dress on and eyeglasses I think and looked kind of like an anime character. Anyone have the video?

@Gamer- no, she's got all the paperwork and legal stuff covered. I'm just talking about girl talk. The question was specifically for Milayu, since she's probably in the best position to tell me what kinds of mundane things she had to lean during or after the transition, that I might not think about because I've been doing them for so long.

What is the appeal of sex reassignment surgery? I'm sure we can agree that by far the most important factor in determining gender is how the self (whatever that is, exactly) identifies, not what you have between your legs. So why would you undergo a greater or lesser degree of mutilation on your (fully functioning... for now) genitals to fix what is unquestionably a secondary determining factor of gender.
I'm not trying to be all 'why can't you just accept the way <deity of your choice made you>' so hopefully this question doesn't come across this way. It's just that for me personally, if I didn't identify with my biological gender I'd definitely go the
Buck Angel
route (SFW. He's a porn star but it's his Wikipedia article). Take hormones that might help, but hang on to an un-plastic surgery'd set of genitals which don't define my gender whether they're an innie or an outie.

when did you "find" yourself, so to speak, as not being the sex (right word this time? :P) you felt like?
How old were you when you got your operation?
How did your parents react when you "came out of the closet", in lack of a better word?

@Pezz- If you woke up tomorrow, and found that someone had drugged you and done the surgery on you so that you now had a set of female parts, wouldn't you want it changed back ASAP? I mean, would you just accept that you're still a man regardless of what's between your legs, or would you want it set right?

Yeah, if it could be changed back without losing any functionality after two plastic surgeries. Which, currently, it can't.
That's the thing. If medical science was really good at it, then hell yeah gender reassignment surgery would be the way to go.

Ah- ok. So your question was not why change it, but why change it when the surgery isn't perfect?

Yeah. I'd rather have a mismatching but fully functional set of genitals than teflon testicles.

secondary determining factor of gender.
I don't think gender is really determined by phenotype, but it's a method of expression like any other. It'd probably be hard to feel feminine with an erection...
I actually have a question for heterosexual wowheaders... Have you ever fantasised about being a member of the other sex?

Nope- all my fantasies involve me being female. I like playing female characters in RPG's and video games, when given a choice. And when I write, most of the time the main character is female. I guess I don't relate enough to the male mindset to even try to get into character as a male.
