When I see someone looting what they already have, I just whisper them and ask if he/she could give me the item if he/she doesn't manage to trade it for something useful in the end.
Odds are, if you're the first to ask, you have a better chance to acquire the item than you had by simply rolling.

As previously stated, binding loot to a particular spec instead of class would solve very many problems. Whoever rolls need, will get a roll-bonus if the item is intended for lets say Arms warrior, or Fury, because they would use the same items, plate-tanks divided by Blood+DK, prot+warr and prot+paladin. Rogue's and ferals share gear, no problems there, Warlocks and mages are easy too, next category elemental shaman, Spriest and Boomkin would use the same dps-gear stat-wise, but not armor-types, IE gear with spirit, so there you got healers wearing cloth, leather and mail feeling cheated, if they don't win that is. Rings and trinkets same thing there, and what bothers me is that Blizzard didn't see this coming, and TBH, they should have. If a person can hit need, they will. And if no-one needs it for main-spec, it goes to off-spec.
With this kind of gear "categorizing" you'd solve 99% of all problems, making the items unique would solve 99% of the 1% that got left out in the first fix, with the exception of weapons that can be dual-wielded. But then again, that wont happen, because this seems to be "working as intended" according to Blizzard, all the tickets i have submitted have had the same response; "We're aware of this, and at the moment are not working towards solving it."
Just imagine, half the raid automatically passing on items they already had looted, would solve the extreme loot-times, and as far as I'm concerned, if you have already looted a Tier-token, you should loose 33 of the 100 roll-bonus. If you have looted 2, you should loose 66. And when you have looted 3, you loose it completely. Would solve rolling for others too. Though, Premade's could just roll and trade, but that's a problem that could be solved by not being able to trade it. Simple, really.
I'd like this system from my own point of view too, would help me not win items I already won, since I'm just over 30 and already senile. =P And a simple tier-token-tracker would be seriously easy to implement, with all the statistics being tracked all over the place anyway.
But as I said, it doesn't matter, because it will only happen when the sun goes green, and the moon is made of cheese.

Badaccus,
The current system does, somewhat, sort loot by spec. Well, not really spec, but at least by role. Even I have to admit that sorting by spec could be difficult and at times unfair to some players. I have in the past played my druid as Boomkin / Kitty in the same raid.
I think the first issue that needs to be addressed are the items that clearly don't belong to a class or role that can still be needed....usually trinkets, necks, and frills. Especially since these items are some of the more difficut to get, and seem to be the most "ninja'd" items.
Second, would be duplicate items. Other than the tokens, their is no real "need" for having 2 of any piece of gear, outside of having different reforges. And not having to spend a couple minutes and a few gold to reforge should not boost your roll. You should lose the role bonus if you already have the item. (obviously, assuming its not something you can use 2 of.....i.e dual wield weapons, ect)
The tokens, I hate to say, should be avaliable for off-spec. Otherwise, honestly, most players would never win a token roll for off-spec gear. Tier gear is usually what allows a player to get good enough gear to actually be able to play an off-spec. But, it should follow rule #2....once you have both specs tier piece, than you lose your bonus.
And lastly, BoE epics. As long as they continue to have a high value, I think they should be "greed only" like orbs. It is too easy (unfair) for a player to get a role bonus on an item that is worth thousands of gold, just because they "could" equip it. The bind on need somewhat fixed this issue, but I still see people needing on BoE's even if the have equal or better equipment, just to take the item away from the rest of the group.
.
But, alas, I agree 1000% with your last line....
But as I said, it doesn't matter, because it will only happen when the sun goes green, and the moon is made of cheese
Blizz is pretty stubborn to change things, especially things they fell they aready fixed. So until then, i stand by my previous post...need it all if you can, because if you don't, someone else will.

I thought that what you are suggesting is pretty much identical to what blizz said they want to do in MoP? That it should be able to filter by spec rather than just role.

The fact is until MoP the loot system won't change (blizzard have more or less stated prior that sorting by spec is too hard with the current system (probably an excuse but a clear indicator they don't intend to change it for now)). So really you have two options as it currently stands.
Play the ruthless selfish bastard approach and need on anything you can.
Alternatively, keep your moral values in a game full of people who don't give a stuff and get walked over when it comes to loot.
Either way the choice is yours nobody can force you to go either way just don't expect everyone to agree with your choice.

umm a RESTO druid did not get it, a balance druid got itYesterday, the compass drops for my rogue....a bleeding Caster druid gets it!
Come on Blizzard...why does a caster get a role bonus for an agi trinket? I don't care if he/she has a feral offspec..it's an offspec and you shouldn't get the role bonus for stuff you can't use for the spec you queued for.
/end rant!
Why?
As a healer (resto druid) I should be able to role on every int and/or spirit item, right?
But I can't possibly quest in my healer spec unless I like dieing a lot. Why should I not be able to need on agi items for when I have to use my feral spec?
err...you aren't making any sense. A resto druid did not win an offspec roll. A BALANCE druid won a roll against a rogue who was rolling for mainspec. This is one of the situations that blizz has already admitted is a part of the system that isn't working the way it should and that they plan to fix in MoP.

The problem I see is when someone gathers up several of his/her friends who don't need gear and queues up for LFR. In effect, I get one roll on a tier drop and the other person gets four or five. I even see it advertised in trade. "WTB geared people to queue LFR and roll on gear for me - PST"
That, in my opinion, is bull#$%^.
I agree there; that's annoying as hell.
I see people rage about this, but I just don't get it. If you roll against 5 random others, you have a 1/6 chance of getting the token. If you roll against someone with 4 buddies, you still have 1/6 chance of getting the token. Sure, he will have a higher chance than you, but you will still have the same chance of getting it. Is this just pure jealousy because the other guy has a higher chance of getting it, or am I missing something obvious?
