I usually play a class or role that can soak up the damage for his friends. :]
I'm all about the rogues. Backstabby and big damage. Aside from that, casters. I just don't like getting hit. :)
Hmmm, guess it depends on the game. In the Elder Scrolls games, I always play as a ninja/assassin kind of character. In MMOs, I tend to find myself playing caster/ranged classes the most. Most MMOs don't exactly have the most exciting melee combat, unfortunately :/

tend to play warrior and paladin type classes in RPGs. I just like to smash stuff.
I usually play classes that have to do with nature and/or pets and I prefer healing or ranged DPS. In WoW that translates to a Druid or Hunter. I love animals and nature in my real life so that leaks over into my game preferences too...
I generally like to play a warrior; if there's an option between two-handed/DPS and tanky, I'll usually lean towards the prior in single-player games, and tanky in multiplayer.
A long time ago... I used to play the most melee class you can get. But for the last few years I always chose the caster classes, the more unusual the casting system the better.
I always start with a rogue. Be it WoW, Rift, DDO, Aion, FFXI, FFXIV, or SWTOR, I go for the back stabby shady master of DOOM! There's just this draw for me. It is indescribable. I can usually tell how well a designer has done on a game by seeing how well they balanced their rogues. I don't always finish with that class, but it is always my starting class.
I love casters. Tried healing hated it.
Wherever possible I enjoy playing Cleric type classes, or support role classes (as clerics aren't too common outside of multiplayer games). Theif or Rogue.
Mostly play paladins or melee classes.
It's either the sneaky route or a healer.Rogue by heart, Healer where needed.
Tank or Healer. Everquest - Healer, Rift - Healer, World of Warcraft - Tank, Aion - Tank, SWToR - Tank.
