I encourage you to watch the video I've linked whether or not you support SOPA.
As it turns out, it looks like the people who support SOPA DISTRIBUTED the pirating software in the first place!
Never been to reddit before, went there today, and what do I see? This video.

Eh, I'd say it may be more of a coincidence... CBS bought CNET long after CNET began distributing torrent clients. Though CNET has heaps of cookies and many user tracking scripts, so if they wanted to monitor and report the people that downloaded the piracy software, they definitely could.

I'm kind of behind on the times. Why does everyone hate SOPA?

i for one, support this bill. pirating is bad. if they owned the torrent sites, they can make more money. imagine their quarterly sales for the amount of court cases they will win. imagine how many content uploaders go back to their original being.
pirating movies are bad. pirating music is bad. and anyone involved in downloading material without paying is stealing.
imagine, a really talented artist who makes top line music. they can't make money off CDS//ITUNES anymore because everyone can pirate it in just seconds.

the principle of the law is just a cover. All laws of censorship have an ulterior motive behind them.
Allowing global censorship to happen is to put shackles on your own hands and pave the way for abuses to happen. After all SOMEONE will be controlling what gets through the filters and what wont. And that someone can bend either way to push the line further and become a tyrant.
It happened here with the
RESORTE
law, originally intended to be a censorship law for radio and television to monitor what they broadcast on schedules that may have minors as viewers/listeners.
looks all nice and shiny doesn't it? until you get to the part where they also censor any and all sorts of anti-government propaganda, FORCE the TV and Radio stations to broadcast pro-chavez propaganda (or be faced with not only being taken of the air, but THEIR ENTIRE EQUIPMENT, INSTALLATIONS, AND STUFF being CONFISCATED by the government.
Allow a group of people to tell you what you can and can't do on the internet, and you may as well give them a giant tube of vaseline, bend over, and let them F*bleep*K you up the ass all day long for as long as they want.

Pirating is bad, yes, but you should actually look into this bill.

Basically, what the bill would allow happen would be entire sites effectively taken off the internet because someone claims a portion of that site if infringing copyright. For example, if TankSpot decides to say Wowhead is no longer allowed to host their videos, they could petition all of Wowhead to be blocked due to copyright infringement, not just petition to have the infringing material removed. It's taking a combat flamethrower to a hornet's nest.
The best way to combat internet piracy isn't by demonizing the internet, but by reduce the incentive to pirate.

not only that, but whoever is in charge of enforcing the law, gets to decide what is piracy and what isn't.
So, those nice fancy walkthroughs for your video-games? gone. Fan-fics? gone, fan-art? gone.
I'm not blowing smoke out of my ass, this HAPPENED in my country already, on radio and television (where just about every liberty is slowly being repressed) and it will happen to you guys too if that crap gets aproved. So if you have even an ounce of a brain, vote NO on that crap.
This is kinda like the prohibition law for alcohol, except instead of just blocking alcohol, they place a cop on you 24/7 to keep you sober......... you can call that freedom?

Furthermore, it supposedly allows sites to be taken down due to the POTENTIAL for copyright infringement. Read, pretty much everything. For example, it's not hard to see how Youtube would infringe on copyright, but I could just as easily say Wikipedia could be taken down.

It basically says any website that has anything that is copyrighted by another site/company/whatever, has permission to get the entire website that hosts the copyright material blocked.
It's broad enough that its shadow basically casts the entire internet into potential targets. It isn't a smart decision and is being decided by 60+ year olds in Congress who don't know jack %^&* about what they're doing. It could be very very bad if this passes.

Hmm, didn't know there are this many people who don't know what SOPA is!
Honestly though, it is hard to see how anyone could support the bill.
Cnet and Disney (CBS and Disney) SUPPORT SOPA, but in the past DISTRIBUTED the pirating software FOR FREE and made it easier than ever to obtain songs and even encouraged it. From this they made millions of dollars.
Now they want to sue those who download copyrighted songs to make MORE money after they are the ones who gave the pirating software out for free?
I'm more than skeptical about their true motive for sponsoring SOPA
On an off-topic note: SOPA means shut up in greek!

it mostly applies to movies // music.
companies spend millions just to create music, movies, and games.
this bill is going to be passed no matter what.

Yeah, I'm actually surprised that off-topic went this long without a thread discussing it. It became pretty well-known a little over a month ago, maybe even longer. I was actually considering starting a thread, but I guess you beat me to it. :p

Why? Please motivate.
I do not think that you understand just how "big" this bill is. Every site on the web and its sister-site will be shut down for potential copyright infringement. We're not just talking about Pirate Bay, here - YouTube, Wikipedia, Wowhead, IGN and basically every other sites that has something else than only text could potentially be shut down because of
potential
copyright infringement.
Knowing that, I am very interested in how anyone in their right mind could support this bill. Look at what rankkorr wrote (from personal experience, mind you); is that what you'd like for your own country?
