He left these posts on his own former student's page, in response to an article about the incident. The discussion was about teaching kids to stop bullying, and how it can destroy lives. His response was that if the kid didn't want to be bullied, he shouldn't have been gay. When the person whose page it was said it was about bullying of students in the minority, and not political ideas, the teacher responded that 11-13 more kids would have to die before it was an issue. It's not about his beliefs on being gay. It's about his willingness to post on a former student's facebook that be believe the fault of bullying lies on the victim, and that a lot of kids would have to start dying for it to matter enough to deal with.
In a school that is trying to teach kids not to bully each other, then I'd imagine that a teacher posting comments about how bullying isn't a big deal and it was the kid's own fault on the page of a former student, who I'd imagine is linked with a number of current students, would be something that hinders the school educating the kids on this issue.

There's a bright line between speech that breaks laws irrespective of its content and speech that doesn't
Not really, or there wouldn't be hugely expensive court cases determining whether speech was or wasn't libel or not (McDonalds vs. Steel and Morris or Lyman vs Engler). I agree that teachers should be selected on capability to teach alone and demonstrating that one is prejudiced against sexuality, race, gender or religion should all be indicative of being unable to fairly teach a classroom.
