This is actually more like Pokemon than you all may know. Not only will you battle other people with your pets, but you will also be able to find pets in the wild. You will have to fight them with your pets to capture them. In addition, there will be pet trainers, and other NPCs, who will challenge you with their pets.
I know it sounds like I'm just messing around here, but that's all on the MoP section of the official WoW page.

Honestly, it's more like Monster Rancher with that set up.
can you explain to me what the difference is between the pokemon battle system and hte monster rancher battle system is? I've never played monster rancher (and only saw like 2 episodes of the anime and found it boring)
Monster Rancher's system was usually one on one duels between the creatures, with abilities costing a specific amount of Guts to cast them. The whole training angle to your pet is also similar to MR, and the most recent game had fights against wild monsters.

I Grew up watching Pokémon, so if this is anything like 'em im gonna love it. Also played, I think Monster Ranger 2 on Playstation back in a day before WoW. Never seen the Monster Ranger tv show though.

that game was the bomb. loading a bunch of cds into my ps1 to see what kind of monsters i would get. then having the monsters die before training was over.

Never been interested in pokemon, digimon, monster rancher, anything like that. Even this new pet battle system seems silly to me.
But the thought of leveling and battling my mini diablo or zergling does give me a twinge of excitement. I guess I'm hoping they allow the unattainable pets to participate.

Yes it seems a lot like pokemon but is that a good or bad thing ? probably a bad thing but i dk
Should probably read the entire thread before necro'ing: No one can tell yet which of the Mon games it's actually like....as I said here, it looked a lot more like Monster Rancher then Pokemon from the screen shots.

Blizz is targeting a younger player base as anyone can tell ever since the beginning of WoW. They are trying to use the same logic as LoL with the cartoons. As younger and younger kids start playing games, blizz can get more $$$$.
I went to Blizzcon with 10 other guildies. We ranged in age from 25 to 31. All of us were excited for the Pet Battle minigame as an interesting side thing to do in WoW.
So... younger players? It's just more content, and it's fun. Age has nothing to do with it.
Edit: Didn't even notice this was a necro. I didn't read back when it was originally posted, I guess.

The most amusing part is that the described demographics (or at least people in their 20s) are most likely to understand and/or appreciate Pet Battles better considering they grew up with Pokemon and all those sorts of games/shows.

Indeed....and we're gonna see that trend when the change the name of the Mini-Pet's come along; I'm already thinking of changing the name of one of my mini-jousters to Birdramon heh.

Team Rocket should be a group of goblins with rocket packs who are always trying to steal your pets.
Don't give them ideas. Next we'll have a group of Orcs and Humans trying to expand or destroy the landmasses.

I dont mind the idea of the pet battles, it might bring alittle fun to many, especially maybe max leveled players who have already done all the raids and dungeons, and have simply run out of things to do.
BUT, i dont think the pets should be found in the wild, or atleast not in the sense that they attack you, that was one of the things that annoyed me about pokemon, when you just wanted to get to a damn health centre and would still get attacked no real way to avoid, they should be passive.
or they should be loot drops from bosses/mobs, bosses will hold better rarer pets, while mobs will drop more common and uncommon pets.
btw I have not read the actually page about this, ive just read this forum, so maybe this is what they are already going to do, but just an idea.

Bosses will still probably already have the pet drops on them(such as Kael); if you are attacked by a wild pet in WoW, it won't be like Pokemon where you 'have no choice' but to fight.....cause again, this isn't Pokemon.......

Its a bad thing if it takes precedent over main game content like raids, heroics and end game questing.Since it's meant to be done in your off time, I can't see it taking anyone from the real content; probably the Archeology team will be given this to work on.
