And Death Knights are called a hero class to make them sound special so all the cool kids will play one.
We both know that's no excuse. They're heros because they withstood the Lich King's binding and overcame it - something seemingly undone by anyone but Mograine - the way lore unveils, you're one of the first to do so.
Why is everyone considering a hero as the sole spotlight taker? Sure, you don't play the hero in a level Tirion does, or Sylvannas, or any other major character. But you're a hero nonetheless. Numbers are not enough to take the Lich King down, or people would have done so before.
From where I stand, if I alone play the role that took an entire
army
to perform on the "regular" lore... I'm probably way beyond "normal".
My knowledge on lore beyond WoW is quite slim, but it's the game that we're playing, not the books - I don't really see how that should be a measure.

The forsaken and Sylvannas broke LK's control. Nothing special.
You and your raiders represent an army. While you are out questing? YOu are a group of adventurers.
This is what I hate about other MMOs. The PCs always seem like some sort of gods or superheroes. WoW was different. Now the are falling into the same pit.
Why can't I just play a normal guy for once?

The quests in Vanilla were too spread out, had very little to do with one another, and had way to much %^&*ing running around; worse was still going from the Crater to Winterspring, then across to Eastern Kingdoms, then right back to Kalimdor. But it was an
Adventure!
Not some guided tour of the land while your hosts hand you yet another bowl of
popcorn
XP.Not that much.
I wouldn't describe it a second fiddle..more like we embody the essence of Tirion, Varian..etc.
The spirit of these lore heroes, enable 10/25 individuals to become one and defeat the enemy.
No, the heroes defeat the enemy backed up by the
ARMY
represented in game by 10/25/40 people.
Aye, especially in the case of the fall of the Lich King; we are the 'champions' of the Tournament who follow our leaders into the Citadel to take him down. But, over all, we are not 'grand champions' because of our questing; in Uldum, it's Jones who was the 'big hero' for finding Brann and stopping the weapon. In Hyjal, it's the Ancients, Cenarius, and Jarod Shadowsong who won the day, etc etc etc. Even in things like Throne of Tides, we are just a group of faceless people who helped out Neptulon before he was recaptured.
But even then, I've never seen my characters as the 'heroes' of the zone(well, except for Lost Isles and the entire chain on Bloodmyst if you are a draenei), merely one more member of the faction helping to clean up the lands.

When major lore characters start asking for me by name and praising my skills, it really knocks the emersion away...

Because "normal guys", no matter how, are left with mundane tasks. Guarding here, sending message there. The only way to play a normal guy is to have all possible NPCs ungodly powerful, requiring armies of players to down. The existance of regular NPCs immediatelly means that even what we do on World of Warcraft is beyond what regular NPCs can do.
The point is to level up the regular NPC powers so that yours, even with "mundane" tasks, feels significant. No one plays a game to stand there guarding against unlikelly to come enemies that oneshot you.
Heroism is, after all, subject to situation. In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. If all the NPCs in this game were immobile, you standing up and moving would be considered heroic overcoming of adversity. If all NPCs shot flames that destroyed villages, to even be mentioned between them with any relevance, I doubt moving would do much - in fact, you'd have to be able to somehow find a way to survive city-destroying level of siege to even be noticed.

Not true at all. I don't need an army to take down fellow normal guy on the street, who is an NPC for the purpose of this arguement. I mean, I just want to be like a standard adventurer.
That is why I liked the old qests. Sending messages and stuff from one side of a zone to another, delivering supplies to Razor hill. t just felt like I was part of the world. I didn't feel like a guy sitting at his computer. I felt like Atik: Undead adventurer, busy doing little things for people.
One day, I heard about a possible alliance between scourge and razorfen. I wasn't about to let that happen, so when they sent out a call for adventurers to put a stop to it, I signed up quickly.
We traveled through the barrens, meeting outside and forcing our way in. We hacked and slashed our way through that mad cave system; lost for what felt like days.
But we did it. Not I, we. We saved the barrens from a scourge invasion, I was a mere part of a whole.
And so I returned to my interesting life, traveling down to Tanaris and even explorer the fabled Un'Goro crater. I was never well known, but the gold was more than enough thanks.

I play a game to enter another world. I don't want to be an incredible hero or anything. I just want to be a character in that world for a while.

We'll agree to disagree, of course. The hypothetical situation I called would probably suit you; However, when a world is devastated, on the verge of complete anihilation, I feel awkward completing simple tasks on minor riots. I actually don't particularly like the main spotlight either, but I love seeing my actions impact the main story's role. I, for one, feel our major character roles
complete
our path, not destroy immersion.
But what we seem to collide the most is on our vision of what a hero is.

To me, you're already the one who stood up to the normal guy on the street. If he was a threat, and you were asked to take him down, there's a reason it was you, specifically. Excluding major leaders delegating minor forces, there are several minor people who ask you for their help, where their trusted could not provide it. That, to me, is something not all are able to do, something to praise.

The problem I have with the major characters (Sylvanas, Thrall, etc) calling for my character personally and praising my abilities is the fact that when I see another player's character standing next to me, talking to that major character, I know they're saying the same thing to them, and THAT breaks the immersion.

Why can't I just play a normal guy for once?
I'm a normal (well, maybe slightly above-average) guy in real life. When I play an RPG I want to be a H-E-R-O . I want to be uber, larger-than-life, even demi-god-like. Otherwise, what's the point?
But that is what I do in EVERY OTHER GAME.
And in real life I'm a normal guy. But I'm a normal guy on earth, not Azeroth. I'm not an orc or troll or draenei or worgen. I'm not able to conjure my dinner or summon demons. I'm not able to go off on some epic journy to another continent where I deliver a letter of urgent importance before paying a mage ten gold to open a portal back to orgrimmar.
I don't play to be a hero, I play to be a part of the world of Azeroth.
