I think WoW will die when Blizzard releases their next MMORPG--and by die, I mean it will probably still sustain 3-4 million subscribers for quite a while.

Wow will die when blizzard wants it to. I also believe SW:TOR will not kill wow but be a serious contender.

WoW is strong in its team play. When it got launched the rest of the RPGs was a farming contest. WoW targets the more social netizens. If you are not among these people you can predict your own exit.

The only game that tried to position itself as a "wow killer" was WAR which flopped for several reasons but certainly the sheer weight of its own hype was a problem. I think you're being unfair to some of these other games that never positioned themselves as wow killers, they never set out with a budget that required them to reach 10+ million subscribers to break even.
The success of an MMO on the market isn't actually related the WoW at all, it's all about reaching the number of sustained subscribers (or overall revenue for F2P games) to cover the development and support the on-going running costs with a profit.
There's nothing yet to suggest that WoW isn't an anomaly in the market but the question of when will WoW die? I think Ashelia's right, only Blizzard can kill WoW and they will be treading very carefully with the production of Titan to be sure not to be too starkly their own competition.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##asakawa##DELIM##

WAR flopping made me sad, I enjoyed it a lot.
Then they heavily nerfed my spec/class

Never mind FFXI, Ultima Online is still running and taking money. It was one of the first real MMOs and was released in 1997. Meridian 59 (1995) is still running though not taking money to do so as far as I can tell.
But your point is absolutely right, MMOs don't die they just keep scaling back.

Their next mmo is going to be aimed at all those people who play COD for 2 hours a day, every day, for the last 5 years for ´free´. Blizzard wants them to pay a subscription fee. It is also very safe for ATVI because there is not much cross-over in who plays wow.
SWTOR is not going to kill wow, or even put a dent in it. If you haven´t seen TOR, watch videos... it is VERY VERY different from WOW. It is very slow in a lot of ways and wow players for the most part will not tolerate it well. The voice acting and long drawn out quest-getting process, as well as travel time will make it feel like going back to 2007 and turning óff´ the ShowInstantQuestText option again. Wow has evolved to where we are know, where questing is fast and efficient.... will WOW players want to go back to where 95% of questing time involved listening to the questgiver and travel? TOR will probably hinder the amount of new people coming to WOW, but I doubt it will steal away a lot of players other than the first month.
BTW.. Rift last week closed 40% of their servers.... well, not really closed.... they marked them as ´trial´.. and asked vet players on those servers to move to the remaining servers. I´m not going to say the game is dying, but clearly it isn´t growing. They also still haven´t announced they hit the 1M point in client sales, which means subscriptions is significantly less than that.
My guess is that WOW will someday ´jump the shark´ and introduce something a little too drastic. UO did it with AOS and of course SWG did it with NGE. So far Blizzard has kept with the More of the Same mantra... which keeps players bored, but paying as they progress in predictable ways.

"you aren´t in Azeroth anymoe"... or how about the dev from AOC stating something like ´WOW is hamburger, AOC is steak´.
War flopped because it was a pvp based game with 2 factions. In the first week, each server had a dominate faction, by the second week, everyone knew not to roll a certain faction on certain servers. Without a third faction, there was never any hope for the undersized faction. The second big flaw was that éndgame´ was almost completely PvE. You would battle for days against enemy players to open up the city to be conquered, but once you got there, it was a small ´instance´of the city that wasn´t inhabited by enemy players, only NPCs. Imagine if you raided Ogrimmar, but when you got there, all the enemy players were phased out and all you could do was kill NPCs... not a terrible idea in WOW, but in a pvp game, it was terrible.

WoW won't die from the top down, but from the bottom up.
This is a very addictive brand loyal game, people already playing it are hard pressed to give it up for another brand.
The problem could come from Blizz in ability to find new subscribers to replace current players who just quit playing all together.
WoW claims a total subscriber base, but I sure would like to see posted numbers by demographic areas.
I could foresee the demise of WoW in the USA, but it could still find a profit in opening and growing oversea markets.

As stated before, WoW will die when Blizzard gives up on it.
The reason for that may vary. Blizzard may reach a pinnacle where they have simply added too much to balance or see no "practical" way to fix something that may be a problem in the future.
We can take a look at a few examples.
Bags
Bags can only get bigger with each expansion. How long before we only need 1 bag to carry everything? I have never purchased a Frostweave Bag in my life - 16 slots have kept me going. This effects Tailoring as profession.
Spells/Skills
With each expansion more spells are added. How long before we can't put everything on our castbars? How long until we can't keybind everything needed? And with each spell more balancing is required. Blizzard could merge some spells as they did in Cataclysm, but that can only go so far. And that applies to all things in WoW, they can only go so far. What are we going to do with another 10 or even 15 abilities? No, it wouldn't work.
But that is the problem Blizzard faces
, either add new amazing spells and attract more people to an expansion and make lots of money or release an expansion that has no hype due to "balancing issues".
What do you think?

But your point is absolutely right, MMOs don't die they just keep scaling back.Well some of them; Star Wars Galaxies is suppose to be shutting down at the end of the year.
And for those thinking that
Titan is the sequel to WoW
, not so much.
