What's in a name?

The post on "How not to name your character" got me thinking: A lot of people have interesting names for their characters (the legion of Legolas clones notwithstanding). So I thought I'd ask if anyone was interested in sharing their favorite character names, and name origins. I'll start:
For the most part, I try to come up with 'unique' names that sound appropriate for my characters, with a few exceptions. Since I'm bored, I'll run through all my characters' names here:
Xaratherus
(Zar-ath-er-us)
: My Paladin started out as a Draenei. I actually
dreamed
this name the night before Burning crusade dropped. I have no clue what it means. When I faction-changed to a Blood Elf the name still fit somewhat; eventually Xara became a Tauren, and although the name doesn't really fit that race in my mind, it was too much a part of who I am relating to WoW to get rid of. As an aside: For a long while I was the only Xaratherus in the game, and as far as I know I'm still the only person using it regularly on the Internet.
Wakiza
: Wakiza started out as a Draenei Shaman named Xendavos (Zen-dah-vose). At the time, all of my Draenei's names started with an X. When I faction-changed, I wanted a more Native American name, so I went with Wakiza, which means 'desperate/determined warrior'.
Hanhia
: My Tauren warrior, Hanhia is an intentional misspelling of a Native American name used because the correct spelling was already taken. Humorously enough, i don't remember what word I misspelled, so I have no idea what it means now.
Ortha
: This one is a lengthy in-joke. My Troll Death Knight got this name because her original name (Maciveli) didn't really fit when I faction-changed from a Gnome to the Horde side. I didn't want a Blood Elf. Shortly before I faction-changed, my roommate was trying to tell me about creating his DK, and he Spoonerized the phrase "Orcish Death Knight" to "Orthash D**k Knight". Thus, Ortha was born - not as an Orc, because I didn't like the Orc female models, but as a Troll (because Trolls are better than you).
Semhazai
: I was looking for a classic demonic name for my Blood Elf Warlock. I did a quick web search and ran across this name, which is the name of a demon from Hebrew texts.
Bobross
: This is my baby Druid. It started as a guild in-joke back when Tree of Life form was a 'permanent' transformation; someone made a joke about a Druid being a "happy little tree" and I swore from that point forward that I would immortalize PBS's best-known pot-smoking painter as a Resto Druid. Of course, the joke was on me - he's actually a Boomchikn right now...

From the thread that inspired this thread:
I use Norwegian words for all my characters:
Blødhemn - my Druid, it means vengeance in blood
Blødskjold - my Paladin tank, it means blood shield
Blødforsvinne - my Rogue, it means to vanish in blood
Blødvellyst - my Shaman, it means blood lust
Blødsvømme - my DK, it means blood bath
(I have more, but I think you get the hint)
People sometimes complain about how they can't do anything since they don't know how to type the "ø" (alt+0248). But I have never had a problem inviting people, or whispering to people because there are very easy ways around it, like shift clicking their name.
I use Blød in all my names because I have so many alts, and it makes it much easier to know who I am no matter what character I'm on. Everyone in vent just calls me Blød so its easy to figure out.
It started out with Blødhemn, an album by the Norwegian band Enslaved. Then I decided to keep the Blød theme going so people could recognize me and added Norwegian words that applied to the class in some way. They pretty much fail when put up to literal translation, but that's not really the point ;)
But yes part of the original inspiration for it is from my interest in viking and Scandinavian lore and mythology. 4/4 of the grandparents are from Norway, Sweden, or northern Europe. (I'm American) I even have a Norwegian coin on my keychain my grandpa brought back from when he was stationed there after the Korean war. It's from 1949.
I think I was born in the wrong country.

Murrdurr - A name I used for my Rogue in Everquest. It was a old guildmates alt bank toon but he deleted him so I could have the name.
Kinadim - Random name I came up with for my Dwarf Paladin in Everquest while messing with the random name generator.
Vacious - My friends old Mage's name in Everquest
Dornith - Another name I came up with by messing with a suggestion from Everquests random name generator.
Zdenek - My cousins real first name
Laven - Yet another variation of a name given from Everquests random name generator that I switched around.

See BlødBlødBlød :)
Isn't Blodwyn a common Celtic name too?

My naming system is...well, strange heh.
First toon was a druid Night Elf named Dragonsong; is currently a Worgen one now, but I still don't remember where I came up with it.
After that was my Dwarf hunter named Graystone(forced to change the name to Lodestone on server transfer), named after a gargoyle character from a book series I enjoy.
From there, the name go strangely heh:
Gnome female Warlock: Mareluxia, named after Marluxia from Kingdom Hearts CoM.
Draenei female Warrior: Taelena, random name generator with an additional a at the end.
Draenei female Shaman: Calinnias, named after a fellow guild mate heh.
Draenei female Mage: Kechara, word from another book series that means 'dearheart'....and since the toon was created to level with a girl I had a crush on well....
Draenei female Priest: Makennshi means White Cloud from the Final Fantasy Unlimited universe.
Draenei female Paladin: Maldoushi means Red Mist, also from the FFUu, and the sibling to Makennshi.
Draenei female Deathknight: Doomwhisper, honestly, speaks for itself.
Human female Rogue: Kuriokaze, Black Wind, again, from the FFUu.
Horde side:
Blood Elf female Death Knight: Desmona, think I was naming her after one of my favorite villains from Gargoyles heh.
Troll female Hunter: Zalala, named after an RP toon, and can't remember where I came up with that name.
Troll female Druid: Mirii, another RP toon, actual name is either Mirara or Miriam depending.
Goblin female Shaman: Blastfuse, which works with the goblin naming theme.

My main, undead warlock currently named Nekronomicon, started as Nekroraep. I'll spare you any confusion by stating clearly that this was meant as a corruption of Necrorape and was meant to be as foul and disgusting as possible, but without getting me banned. I server transferred at one point for an extended period of time, during which I re-rolled the character on my original server. When I got ready to move my main back, the name was taken, so I just renamed it after Lovecraft Mythos, which I love and fit my standard naming convention easily.
Nekrokvlt - Nekro + another corruption, the word 'cult' this time, as it is generally poked fun at in reference to black metal, or what people think is black metal
Nekrodamus / Nekrofucius - Nekro + Nostrodamus / Confucius, simple enough
I also originally had a toon named Soiherduliek and a friend was named Mudkipchan. Somehow, he was reported and had to change his name, so I changed mine as well, it is now Nekronomia, like pneumonia, or any other innumerable diseases / afflictions. She is a shadow priest.
@Ex - Metal band name references ftw
I also have a few, though hey defy my typical naming convention completely.
Thymajestie - Paladin - epic power metal band
Hammerfall - Paladin - same
Rakoth - Warrior - folk / black metal band from Russia
Hollenthon - Warlock - folk / symphonic black metal from Austria
Lullacry - Hunter - gothic metal / rock band

My main, a dwarf Paladin named Funden, came about as an unconscious bastardization of the name "Fundin" from Lord of the Rings.
I had a character named Fundin too, then I deleted him. I wonder if the spot is still open...

Xedosz
Tauren Hunter: Xedosz - After my car at the time (Mazda Xedos), but Xedos and Xedoss were taken.
Tauren Paladin: Bierflesje - Named it after something on my desk. Means beerbottle in Dutch.
Tauren Warrior: Bullcrit - Well, it's a bull, and he crits.
Tauren Druid: Taurminator - Yes, it's lame. Want to change this for a while now.
Tauren Priest: Atheïst - No, it's not spelled wrong....in Dutch.
Tauren Shaman: Totemic - After the teddybear guys in Winterspring.
Tauren DK: Fustje - Means "keg" in Dutch.
Orc Rogue: Akamagosh - "Aka'Magosh" = "A blessing on you and yours" (Orcish).
Blood Elf Mage: Pretslet - Ehr...it's kinda sexist, so i'll save the translation.
I haven't rolled a Warlock yet, so no name there.

Love the names, Chaos. Some good bands in there, not very well known except maybe Hammerfall. (I'm listening to Rakoth right now, you reminded me of them, I haven't listened to them in years.)
On my old account, before I started with the whole Blød-theme, had some more band references in it (this was my first account in TBC).
Nathrakh
- my first hunter named after the band
Anaal Nathrakh
, a British grind/black metal band.
Hexen
- my old priest that never made it passed lvl 20 or so, named after the Satanic, symphonic black metal band from Jerusalem (lol),
Bishop of Hexen
.
Dødheimsgard
- my first druid, named after the band
Dødheimsgard
, a Norwegian black metal band. The name translates to Realm of Death. Their old stuff is much better than the new IMO.
Demilich
- my warlock that never made it passed 30 or so, named after the Finnish death metal band of the
same name
. They got the name from D&D. I saw them in L.A. on their last tour back in 2006 just before they split up.
I also made a guild with a buddy of mine called
<The Ghouls of Creepsylvania>
which we named after a band called
Ghoul
. They have a whole huge back story about how they are from a country called Creepsylvania with a surprising amount of lore to go with it. I've seen them live a few times and they are an absolute crack-up. Always in character through out the entire show.
That same buddy had a rogue named
Dissector
- one of the member's stage names in Ghoul, it's now his priest's name.
Then, after not one person caught the reference on the guild name, and constantly made fun of it, we made another guild called
<None So Vile>
. It's named after the second album by the Canadian band
Cryptopsy
.
My forum name is named after the band,
Ex Dementia
,
a band I used to play with.
Edit, by that I mean we played a show with them, and used to "jam" with. Just read back over it and it sounded like I was in the band.

Corpseicle - Yes, I misspelled it. This was when I was 11 or so. Corpse + Icicle. Genius, I know. But out of the list of horrible Corpse puns I made when I was 11, that was the best and most fitting.

Uh...well, there's Razrhwk, the hunter. It's an email I used back in high school and it felt like it fit with my hunter. He was followed by Razrhack, Razrlock, and Razrhawk (I was not proud of these three).
Notholy came about because I never thought I'd be healing on my paladin...which changed one fateful DTK when I healed the last boss in ret gear and spec. The name was short, simple, and didn't sound terrible like all of the names with Razr as a prefix.
Lastly, Ciron came about because I wanted a clothie with a short C name. Apparently it's also a river in France, but I definitely didn't know that at the time of making the alt.

Nipah
I tend to find myself posting in these types of topics a lot... I guess I must really like my character names, huh?
Anyhow, I'll do this in order (from first created in 2004 to present):
Uther Server
Juran
: No real reason behind this name, I just liked the sound of it for a male Human Warlock.
Elis
: Same deal as the last guy, this one seemed to fit my female Night Elf Hunter.
Tousai
: A male Night Elf Druid who I ended up deleting because male Nelfs are doofy looking. Name most likely based off of Battousai from Rurouni Kenshin.
Isel/Esil
: I got a little less creative this time, and just went "F it, these names work" for a Nelf Warrior & Druid.
Thallas
: Male Human Warrior. He was awesome. I think that other than Juran, I regret deleting him the most. He's generally the basis of all the male Humans I make (bald/gray hair with the little "W" looking goatee/mustache).
// quit the game, deleted all but Elis because I was stupid //
Scarlet Crusade Server
Nipah
: Ah, good ol' Nipah. He is named after a virus. Why? Because the guild I decided on with my friends was named "The Wandering Plagues", and we wanted to have suitable names. This quickly became my "handle" online, and replaced all my old ones which I stole from various manga/anime. Male Troll Shaman.
Gingivitis
: kek. Also a member of The Wandering Plagues, his name is a silly joke. Surprisingly, the RPers on SC were quite receptive to him and his hilarious lock picking pitches in /trade. Male Forsaken Rogue.
Tetri
: Female Forsaken Warrior. Named after looking around the room and seeing my DS copy of Tetris. Yes, my 2nd favorite name (and the basis of pretty much any female character I make) is named after Tetris.
Plaguebanker
: Male Orc Warlock. Originally a banker for the guild, but I went and played him to about level 40 before remembering that I didn't enjoy Warlocks.
Jur
: Male Orc Hunter. Based off of my first character Juran, but that name was taken on SC. I still like the name Jur, as it strikes me as very orcish.
// took a break from the game again, this time without deleting anyone important //
Shu'halo / Zuluhed Servers
Tetri / Ging
: Various characters were created, all with names of my other characters.
Sen'jin Server
Nipah
: Sadly, my favorite name on this server got taken by a "disposable" character I made to sign a guild charter for my brother. Little did I know that I would one day be playing on this server seriously, and by the time I realized it, Nipah was too far into being an awesome banker alt to be salvaged.
Tetri
: A female Draenei Shaman this time. Currently my best equipped character (but that's not saying much, as she's not even decked out in Heroic gear for the most part).
Jurana
: Female Gnome Warlock. Was deleted to make room for newer alts when the Cataclysm came around. RIP little lady.
Earmuffs
: Male Troll Death Knight. His name is a joke, much like Gingivitis'. When a friend and I went and tried out FFXI again, it was about 3am and we were feeling quite stupid. Thus, the "Adventures of Earmuffs and Pooter" was born. Sadly, they only lasted about 5 minutes in FFXI before being deleted... but Earmuffs lives on!
Lorik
: Previously a male Human Warrior (Thallas reborn), now a male Gnome Warrior. I had gotten him to level 80 during WotLK, and even purchased epic flying before deleting him. *sighs* Yeah, that's how I roll.
Zeril
: Male Troll Hunter. When I finally convinced a few guys to reroll Horde, I made this guy. He's quite cool, but he should be, because he's a Troll.
Awel/Nutt/Kalig
: Various new alts I made for Cataclysm, they're currently sitting in limbo around levels 10-40 or so. In order: female Troll Druid, male Goblin Shaman, male Worgen Hunter.
tl;dr:
I have a lot of alts, and a lot of deleted alt ghosts. I tend to stick with short, 3-6 letter names, in the hopes that people won't abbreviate them into something silly ("DON'T CALL ME NIP!"). I also tend to reuse names across servers.
and for the record: I was the first Nipah. I had it before it was some weird little noise some chick made in some random anime.

Shrubbery
-> Orc Shaman. Originally an exercise in TBC where I was wondering if the simple name "Shrubbery" was taken yet. It was not.
I always like to see names like this; simple, random, and humble.

Mine are meh overall. I'd like to redo them with a theme, but I'm not name changing all of them, plus I can't think of any good theme to use.
Dhumkyn
- Tauren Druid. Born Soosad (I started off bouncing between two characters I named Toobad and Soosad). I renamed Soosad to Dhumkyn after too many pronounced it Sue-sad instead of a drawn out sew and I deleted Toobad because at the time I really didn't like Paladins (2.4.3-ish). Dhumkyn is an RPG-styled spelling of Doomkin, which we all know is one of the nicknames for Balance Druids.
Preposterone
- Orc Death Knight. Love this name. Reference to PowerThirst. During my mid-Wrath hiatus, my account got compromised and he got shuffled off to Malorne, and in the mean time someone created another Preposterone on my home server.
:(
When I got him back to Icecrown, I had to name him Valfodr (one of Odin's name, Father of the Slain). Some point before Cata dropped, I noticed the name was open again, so I changed it back.
Sacremoo
- Tauren Priest. Born Anaesthetic the Blood Elf. Leveled to mid 70s in Wrath using the old Energizer spec with the plan of being a Disc priest. Switched to Tauren and the Sacre bleu pun the day 4.x dropped. Currently a Holy Priest.
Masochistic
- Tauren Prot Warrior. Leveled Prot through LFD at some point late Wrath. Leveled primarily through Cata via LFD as well. Pretty fun times, except for the old level brackets where you did the same two dungeons for four levels. Pretty apt name for the character, I'd say.
Rubmytotem
- Goblin Shaman. What else would a Goblin want you to do with his totem?
Pinktorpedo
- Blood Elf Mage. Joke name for a joke character. The name is intended to be a reference to Spinal Tap's Big Bottom, and I leveled the character via Loremaster during the tail end of Wrath. Unfortunately, I burned out on him before I could finish Outland and Northrend before Cataclysm. He does have the old EK and Kal. Loremaster achievements, though.
Minthotha
- Undead Warlock. Born Udaho the Blood Elf. Chose Minthotha because it feels Lovecraftian.
Solarpowered
- Tauren Paladin. Because Tauren Paladins get their power from the sun.
Hontard
- Orc Hunter. He can't even spell "Huntard" right.
Qwertyasdf
- Goblin Rogue. Couldn't be arsed to think up a real name, so I decided to see if Qwertyasdf was available. Guess what?

Pwntiff, is you name a play on the word "pontiff"? I've wondered that for a while.
