As Rapture Comes...

16For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
I know the passages. They weren't interpreted as the doctrine known as 'Rapture' until sometime in the 18th century, though - which is to what I was referring.
Even if we go back to the time period when those books would have been written, the Jewish concept of the 144,000 'elect' still predates it.
In regards to the Left Behind series: I read most of them. From a fictional standpoint I found them somewhat entertaining; from a theistic standpoint, there were a number of liberties taken even with 'standard' Rapture ideology; from a grammatical and literary standpoint, they were trash.

From their website:
May 21 Doomsday – is it Fake?
Is May 21 Doomsday Fake? No! Harold Camping, Family Radio, and many many other are confirming the fact that May 21st Doomsday is not fake, as we approach Judgement Day 2011. There has been a flurry of media coverage and news articles on the 2011 Rapture, but very few have helped confirmed if it is real for you. Question no more, I have all the answers about May 21 Doomsday!
Well I'm convinced. I thought it was fake but I have just been proven wrong.

I hate idiots like these. If only they would read their Bible more . . .
“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

Don't forget that Camping predicted this back in, I think, 1994 as well, and when nothing happened, he came back shortly after and said, "Oh, sorry, I figured out where I miscalculated!"
While it's a tangent, I think that particular passage is interesting. If we assume a fairly standard Christian doctrine that Christ
was
the physical embodiment of the Christian god, then it would be strange for 'the Son' not to know if 'the Father' does.

This is where they would come in and say "Oh, well you can't take everything in the bible literally." Only the parts that suit them can be taken literally, everything else is taken as they want to see it. This is one of the problems I have with organized religions, but mostly Christianity.
The bible is the infallible word of god, but also some parts shouldn't be taken literally, that wouldn't fit the churches agenda.

I'm a little sad, though, because this means there will not actually be any spice in my life anytime soon :(

The Bible details how certain conditions in the world need to be met before the end of the world happens - and this is before the Rapture, pre or post-tribulation.
Conditions like some kind of unification between Israel and Palestine, another middle-east war (likely between Turkey and Israel) and the leader of Russia being from one of the central asian nations (one of the 'stans'). Interestingly there is a guy in the Russian parliament who fits the description, and has been 3rd most popular in the last 2 elections.

Aye, but this Russian isn't Putin or Dmitry Medvedev and we will have to wait for either one of them to die soon as they'll be passing the presidency back and forth for some time yet :P

Same here. I desperately want to meet someone who believes this and call them up the next day just to see what they say.
Better yet, I want to call up Harold Camping and see what his excuse was this time for being wrong. It should be pretty good.
I also want to hear from some of the people who gave up everything for this day. Not because I want to laugh at them, but because I want to see that they were hopefully enlightened, and would not so easily fall for this again.
That Camping guy is one gigantic

But they predicted the twin towers! Wait, or was that Nostradamus? But dude, it's the end of the caleeeeeendeeeeeeeer....
Oh definitely. It's a lot more 'hip' to believe, having come from Mayans and not a crackpot religious guy. I find it hilarious.

What is upsetting me more and more as I read this thread is how you Americans get all the fun once again! No-one has bothered to invite us Brits in on this Rapture of yours and I haven't heard one news story on it all day.
It's so unfair!

Sorry, :-/ It was a joke - adult stuff, add spice to his life...
You may want to edit chaos's response too, as he quoted me.

In all fairness, we have a much bigger country, and therefor a much larger pool of idiots to stir up all this fun.

A few years ago I was reading Ezekiel 37-39, then I got quite interested and got on Wikipedia to look at the 2008 Russian election.
This guy
was the only candidate born outside of Russia, in the geographical location outlined in the bible prophecy. And his personality and controversial views (support of Iran, wants to wipe out Israel) quite fits the profile. He has been gaining in popularity too.
I'm not one to usually support prophecy, but I nearly shat myself when I put it all together myself with a little bit of research.
