Drain Life's damage has been reduced by approximately 25%.
Drain spec is dead.
WTF!
Seriously, what the hell are they up to in that California ivory tower? Sudden whims sprung from nothing, change from day to day? Just when I started to like playing a melange of the drain and SB mechanics...
and I guess this a quite considerable nail in the coffin for afflock PVP. Oh well, I'm already having ten times more fun choppin heads on my warrior.

Thanks Asakawa for that hidden gem :) Made my day.
As for the 25% damage reduction to Drain Life. We all knew that was coming now, didn't we? It just means we'll be using the SB spec I suppose.

Well, as the recent discussion suggested, it's always been a bit of an abomination.
@TheVorago, I understand you being shocked in terms of why did they decide to fix it now (my position in the recent discussion was that if they were going to fix it they'd have done it in 4.1 so I'm surprised they chose now to fix it too), but it can surely come as no surprise.
and "California ivory tower"? lol, interesting rhetoric. Am I missing something by not being American or is that as silly a thing to say as it sounds?

what's there that needs to be fixed? I don't understand. The 2 specs seem in theory as well as in practice close enough to each other (at least for me) and it becomes basically a matter of preference and nothing more.
my reference to an ivory tower was in the general sense of appearing cut-off from reality and in a state of intellectual conceitedness. And oi Asa!, I'm no American....Blue and yellow here please :P

The already announced they didn't want drain life to be a viable filler for affliction. I don't like it either, but you really shouldn't act so surprised. We all knew it was coming.

I remember all the way back to Beta when we were first seeing Drain spec forming as a possibility we all thought it would get nerfed before it even went live. Personally I don't like using a channelled filler but I hadn't realised that they'd made Drains refreshable like other DoTs which made a big difference.
I'll admit that I'd become so used to it that I assumed Blizz would leave it now but it's no real surprise.
I get the "ivory tower" cliché, it's just odd that you would specify California and even moreso as a non-American
(blue and yellow means Swedish I guess - I'm continually startled at the skill with which many European countries teach their people the English language. My guild has lots of Dutch and Norwegian members who speak better than me! Particularly surprising is the grasp of idioms).
I don't really think they are cut-off and I particularly don't think it applies here. My guess is that they're in-touch with the community enough to see that EJ puts Drain spec significantly above other options right now. I assume they were happy enough that it is an option for those that enjoy Drain enough to play it at a small loss but don't want it to be dominant.

They nerfed the damage, not the healing.

Which is bad. Drain Life is the spell used as a "filler" in PvP because of its damage.
And about the healing.. As affliction it is just extra IMO. Self heals have been nerfed. That's why I don't even consider it a heal anymore.

Is 25% really that much of a nerf? Before we go all "chicken little" we should see just how big of an impact that makes.
I know I prefer to play Drain Life, but I'll adapt as I (and probably most all of you) always have. But I do remember reading some blue post ages ago about them not wanting warlocks to Drain fill. So we'll just have to wait and see.

I think it's fair to say that a 25% nerf will make it significantly worse compared to SB. It's DPET is already slightly lower than the nuke but the shortfall is made up by added Felhunter damage and the like. After a 25% drop there will be no good reason to keep playing it and I imagine it will quickly fall into disuse.
I'll keep an entry for DL filler spec in my Options thread if it does get generally abandoned so we'll see if it actually becomes a massive disadvantage or just a minor suboptimal choice.

I honestly never liked Drain Life as a filler; I already have a Priest I play as Shadow from time to time and I get enough of the channeled filler frustrations. Making Shadow Bolt optimal again as it generally has been before recently sounds fine to me.

i still dont get it...why must we have one dominant affliction talent spec? I feel good taking away some pressure from the healers using drain life as a filler even if I am specced for shadow bolt. And it is also a matter of reading the situation - SB is a slow cast, and when you suspect your cast may soon be interrupted it is nice to now you have an instant channelling spell that does about as much damage as the hard cast shadowbolt. They dont want us to use DL as a filler then. Why?

Heh. Yep.

But really all I think it's going to mean is people will use AffDrain till the get the 4piece, then use the SB spec.

I never liked or played the Drain Life spec so I'm not fussed about this change.
It's hardly unexpected, as previously mentioned, Blizzard have expressed many times that they do not intend for Drain Life to be used as a main filler because it makes Affliction feel too much like a Shadow Priest.

I hear this a lot, and what bothers me is that it sounds a bit 'rude'. Because there are a lot of players who don't play spriest and do like the affDrain spec. So I would say it is definitely not 'fine'.
They announced they didn't want affDrain spec being pve viable, but did they ever say why?
