I will never say that I am happy that someone is dead, but Osama Bin Ladin was a close call.
...by this one very small victory.
Umm, I'm happy because it's the start of the decline on world terror.
He got what he deserved, his son died too which is a bonus.
And it's a very large victory, yes it cost civilian lives and lots of money, but he's finally dead and it sends a strong message to perpetrators of this sort of crime.
I doubt that because one man, of one group (again not the most clued on who he was tied in with), will bring a decline of terror, terrorism will always exist.
... he's the leader of al-Qaeda.

While I agree that his death will probably lead to a decrease in terrorist action (at least temporarily), there will always be extremists and power-hungry individuals out there.

...some of these posts are just very /facepalm. That is all.
You win the thread, sir.
I wonder about some of these posts: "Osama didn't deserve death"
HELLO?
This was a guy whom dedicated his life to training people to kill Americans and Jews. There remain hundreds of training camps spread from North Africa to East Asia. Where people are serious about shooting or blowing up the 'infidels'.
He spewed vitriolic speeches, and incited hate. He was responsible for the death of thousands of innocents, and also of a network of trained and eager killers.
Here is a man who spent a life-time with no qualms about killing any number of innocent people.
I wonder about the age, intelligence and common-sense about the forum posters who reckon the USA shouldn't have killed him.
Double-tapping Osama on the left side of the head was surely not the only option, but it was the best option. It will deal a bigger blow to al Qaeda than merely detaining him.

There's something that several people have gotten wrong in this thread that I would like to correct.
In a typical terror organization, cutting off the head would do very little, as terrorist groups are cellular in structure. Thus, if Al-Qaeda was a typical terror group, killing Usama would do very little.
Al-Qaeda however, is not a typical terror group. It is a political group. The entire purpose for Al-Qaeda is to restore the lost Khaliphate, by any means necessary, and to make Usama the new Khaliph.
Thus, we can assume that while Al-Qaeda might still carry out some attacks, for the most part it is going to lose its focus and not be the factor it has been for the past couple of decades. I fully expect to see its members drift to other groups and to fail to be a player in world politics within a few years, perhaps a decade at the most.

TLDR: I think Obama has been dead for a long time and that the Government is lying to us.
I need the death certificate.

Not sure if anyone else has done this, but . . . has anyone else accidentally 'spoonerized' and wound up saying that 'Obama (sin Laden)' was dead?
Girlfriend: "Hey mum, did you hear, Osama bin Laden was killed"
Girlfriend's mum: "Oh my god, really? Who killed him?"
GF: "The Americans did"
GF's mum: "What? Why would they want to kill their own president?"

And donny, some people really feel strongly about this kind of thing, and while there's no law against having opinions or sharing them, it's a bit insulting to put in all this stuff saying that Obama just released the news now so he could get reelected. Just saying :)Why is it insulting? I think you miss the point of democracy if you think my opinion of a president is insulting.
I find it insulting that everyone believes the crap they are fed by the media, when most of it clearly goes against logic and scientifically proven fact.
Case in point:
The whole dumping of the body in the ocean troubles me on the legitimacy of this claim. I am personally somewhat inclined to believe he had been dead for some time and was merely being used as a bogeyman but I can't claim that for certainty.
I agree. I have never been one of those "conspiracy theory" people out there...this is just odd as hell.
The US Government said they confirmed it was Bin Ladin through DNA. In my line of work, DNA is often used, and it always takes about 5 days to get the results back if they are working on it right away. The DNA confirmation apparently happend in what...an hour?
And to spend 10 years on the biggest manhunt in the world and just toss the body into the ocean without photographing it for additional proof that quickly is odd.
I obviously believe that the raid on the compound happened, and that there were Al-Queda inside, and possibly even relatives inside but I doubt Bin Ladin is there. He was using a Dialysis machine for his kidney failure back in 2001. I think Bin Ladin has been dead for some time : / Sadly, I think the US is giving us this story to boost morale and give some closure to the families of fallen soldiers and the families that lost loves ones on September 11th.
TLDR: I think Obama has been dead for a long time and that the Government is lying to us.
I can't really put anything together in the 5 minutes before my break finishes, so for now I'll just say: QFT.

What is your line of work? Is it top of your field research, with the latest technology? What if the US govt had better resources than you do?
There are many different DNA tests, with result times wildly differing.
They would have been prepared; would have been stupid to report that "...aaah... we think we caught him...we got a bearded fellow....DNA test results will take a few weeks..." and then been ripped apart by the media and opposition.

They never gave a specific time.

They did not say that they didn't take photographs. You expect a photojournalistic essay made public from the time they started the mission to when they jettisoned his corpse into the sea? They may release a few photos, but they will keep most of them away from the public.
He was using a Dialysis machine for his kidney failure back in 2001.
This was not proven, it was rumour spread by Pakistani and middle-eastern media.
TL,DR: Some people watch lots of hollywood movies about conspiracies and the US government and then believe them.

They never gave a specific time.
You can measure the time between when the raid occurred and when it was reported. They 'buried him at sea' within 24 hours. Unless they happened to have an advanced DNA lab on hand in the Middle Eastern theatre, you need to factor in time to send it back to the US for identification.
Some people watch lots of hollywood movies
And let's face it - DNA identification, or any identification for that matter, simply doesn't happen as fast in real life as it does in the movies. I've got a mate who works in a forensic lab for the Australian Federal Police that I can ask for a rough timeline if you insist.

You're a smart man (no sarcasm here). You don't think that perhaps they had any sort of fingerprints on him? That perhaps his iris scans didn't match up? They didn't blow him up. They shot him. There's still plenty left there to put together.
I also find it amusing that people are expecting photos/videos to be presented the very second that the news was announced. Perhaps they need to sanitize the photos so that it doesn't reveal methods/sources/whatever. I am certain that in the extremely near future we will be given evidence.

I also work in the field of Bioinformatics. I have been reading the thread trying not to chime in, but here I might be able to add something of value. If they wanted a field test, the could have it done almost anywhere. Most likely they completed their mission, then flew back to a base in Afghanistan. Any remote lab with even basic equipment would have preformed emPCR (replication) and had the base sample made into various hundred sub samples with in 30 minutes. Testing samples could have been flown to India or Iraq in less than 2 hours, and tested in another 2 hours. Total time for a solid verifiable comparison would have been 4-5 hours.
Was it him? Meh, doesn't mater. If it was, its just another blow in the already declining popularity of al-Qaeda in the region. If it wasn't, doesn't mater anyways with the all the uprisings around the area, this so called "Arab spring" is bringing new activity by the people instead of the terrorists.
