Anonymous at large stopped attacking PSN because they wanted to attack Sony, not the players. I have a feeling that this was orchestrated by a few talented hackers that remained. Why aren't they forward about it? Because without Anonymous as a whole, they lose their safety in numbers. If they admitted it, they could be found out and prosecuted, whereas Anonymous, thanks to its numbers, can do it with impunity.
This is just a hypothesis, but I do know that Anonymous
was
attacking PSN a while back, and released a statement about why they stopped. Thing about Anonymous, though, is that they have no organization. While most of them may agree to stop so they don't harm the players, I wouldn't be surprised if some of them just didn't care and kept attacking anyway.

Just noticed this on my morning trawl through the BBC news site. Doesn't look good for PSN users.

So random rumours circulating that it's Microsoft who pulled off the hack to take out Sony....and people actually believe them; yes, like a multi-million dollar company is going to do something like this which can open it up to thousands of lawsuits that will bankrupt it...../sigh

Wait...so the hack could retrieve all info on PSN...? Because I had a PSP a few years back and made an account with all my info, does that mean that's vulnerable?

Um, you'd be surprised. Banks typically won't encrypt your basic information either.
Essentially, all the info is stored in an information database - think of a giant Excel spreadsheet with each info field in a separate column. For the most part, this won't be encrypted, as Sony needs to use and access it on a regular basis.
Banks, credit unions, they do exactly the same thing. Encrypting that much information simply takes too long if you need to utilise it on a day to day basis. Something like a credit card database, which is much smaller and has greater repercussions if compromised, is more worthwhile to encrypt.

They said it would be back up on Wednesday
Instead, on Wednesday they told us that private information was hacked
I'm not sure I want another fix date
