Just watched half the second one. Reasonable amount of sex-scenes, though still drawn out unnecessarily long, lots of wolf-dog attacks instead. I'll finish it at a reasonable hour tomorrow. Pretty good.

At first I thought that the first sex scene between Drogo and Dany (in Episode 02) was magnificently unnecessary, because all we got out of it was, well, Drogo mounting his wife aaaaand that was about it. Rewatching the episode, I figure it wasn't such a bad idea - by the end of Kingsroad we get to see Daenerys shift from a girl who views her marriage as slavery to one who is willing to accept things as they are, and love her new husband.
Which is something that had to established in order for future episodes to work.

Would you guys suggest I finish watching season 1 first before I read the book?

No.
You should do the opposite, rather.

I'm torn. I was wondering if I'd be enjoying the show more now, if I didn't know what was going to happen. Which isn't to say I'm not enjoying it - I am! Immensely. But there's something to be said for suspense and not knowing what's around the corner. There are some huge plot twists that I doubt people will see coming.
As an example, I think seeing Bran fall, and then having to wait a week to see what happens would have made a much bigger impact on me if I didn't already know the outcome. Now I'm just wondering when they're going to get around to introducing Hodor.
On the other hand, I'm enjoying watching their interpretation of characters I'm already familiar with and knowing, just from a glance, who someone is before they're introduced.
Whether you read the book before or after the first season ends, definitely read it.

I'm not saying they're unnecessary, simply that they're drawn out. Have 'em fine, 60-120 seconds, fine, but five six minute sex scenes are really just unnecessary.

Just watched the third, definitely my favorite.

Truly? I felt that the third one was the weakest so far. There is no action, very little character development (a little Jon Snow and even less Dany), and that's about it. Tyrion is as badass as always, Ned Stark realizes how bad things are in King's Landing, and Jeoffrey is being a little ass. Oh, and Bran is being emo.(##RESPBREAK##)140##DELIM##ArgentSun##DELIM##

There is no action
I knew you were just in it for the sex-scenes!
(I make joke.)
Yeah, but no overdrawn sex-scenes, the new barbarian princess got some character development, I got to see looks-like-Brett-from-Flight-of-the-Conchord's whup ass, and blondie get whupped. There was action, it just didn't have to be a battle or a war, and I find The Wall to be a cool atmosphere for the show.

I don't have HBO, unfortunately. I'll just wait for the next season of Warehouse 13 or Being Human.
In all honesty, though, from what I do know about A Game of Thrones it looks to be pretty interesting. I'm sure whoever has a chance to watch it will greatly enjoy it.

Eh, I haven't read the book, but it seemed to me like they're developing Arya's character into (hopefully) being a total badass.

Yeah, around book 3 she starts training to become a super spy/assassin.

I never liked Arya, or Bran, or Catelyn =P
Best characters are Tyrion, Eddard and Jon. Dany is pretty good too.

Arya is a pretty good character too. She gets to grow up fast and grow up into someone dangerous. On a semi-related note, does anyone else seem to remember that
Valar Dohaerys
means "All men must die", or is it something I just made up?

Whhaaattt?!
O.o
How can you not love Arya? She's definitely one of my favorites, along with Jon and Tyrion. Although, I'm definitely interested to see where Bran's story is going as well.

Baelish is not designed to be disliked - he is far too likable a person. Manipulative as hell, but nice on the outside. When authors want a character disliked, they make sure to give them obviously hideous traits. And even then, it doesn't always work.

I think the only character that I really only flat out hate is Joffrey. I mean, sure I dislike Cersei a whole lot, but I can understand why she does what she does. Joffrey on the other hand is just an all around prick.
