My ideal 5man group?
DK Tank (superior aoe threat gen, self healing, group buffs, 2x taunts - 1 with pull mechanic)
Resto Shaman (totems, hex, self rez, heroism)
Mage (group buffs, food, sheep)
Hunter (ice trap, pet buff, misdirection, group buffs)
Warlock (banish, fear, pet buff, soul stone, health stone, summons)
I've played 3 of the 4 tanking classes in the game at progression raiding levels. I personally feel that DK tanks have the best combination of abilities for 5man content. Not saying other tanking classes couldn't do it, just saying it would be easier for DK tanks.
Ranged DPS > Melee DPS. Sorry rogues, but blizzard obviously hates you. Mage/Hunter/Warlock brings so many CC options to the table, not to mention buffs, food, pets buffs, etc etc.
Chain heal is a perfect fit for 5man content, not to mention self rez, and totems. Which makes shamans the perfect healer for 5man content. They also have a reliable CC.

Wow, a 3 year necro.
Your group lacks a druid or pally, so you're missing arguably the best buff in the game. replace the shaman with a druid and you gain...
Hibernate, root, MoTW, Brez and a leather user to further split up your drops.
Don't underestimate Hibernate. This is a very dragonkin-centric expansion, and the new troll dungeons have a lot of animals. Root also should not be overlooked as it is a very viable form of CC. This way your healer brings 1-2 forms of CC into the instance, along with a brez for the tank (keep the soulstone on the healer and save the DK tank's brez for DPS).
Of course bringing the druid means you won't be stuck with leather drops from every single boss.
Meh, i was bored, and it looked like fun.
I don't like pally's. Their arguably the worst healing class, melee dps isnt as good as ranged dps, and DK tanks are IMO better than pally tanks.
DK's have a brez
While i wouldn't mind having a resto druid or a boomkin, that would mean losing either a lock/hunter/mage. I really feel shamans are too versatile to lose, I'd rather have an elemental shaman, than just straight replace a resto shaman with a resto druid.
Hunters have MD, and the best CC in the game. (frost trap works on everything)
So I'd have to choose between a mage or a lock. I personally think a lock wins out. Banish, fear, seduce, enslave, fear, health stones, soul stones, summons. Mage has food which is nice, but not useful in fights, sheep and portals. Portals not as useful as they used to be now that anyone can port in and out of instances.
If i had to choose a resto shaman and boomkin, or resto druid and elemental shaman, I'd have to go with the latter. Hot's are almost as easy mode as chain heal, are more mana efficient, and works even if your spread out. Also elemental shaman get the 10% spell damage totem.
So revised list:
DK Tank
Resto Druid
Elemental Shaman
Hunter
Warlock
Better?
It's a 5man, not a 10man, so your going to have to give up some things. You're not going to be able to fit in everything.

Wow, a 3 year necro.
A necro implies that the topic was dead. Since he was still on topic then it would just be a bump of a 3 year old topic.
OT: My 5 choices would be:
Prot Warrior
Shaman
Mage
Resto/Feral Druid
Hunter
I play on my mage mainly. I like Prot Warriors more for tanking. The best tanks in my guild are warriors. If not a Prot Warrior then a Prot Paladin. Have a Shaman for any role. Their totems will fill in several buffs. If Elemental it will give a bigger spell damage buff. Hunters for their MD and traps. Also have buffs from their pets. Lastly have a Druid fill in the last spot. It can be either for healing or DPS.
As well as those there are also the other things the classes can do. Such as self rez, battle rez and other abilities.

Situational I grant you, but with polymorph and the
intellect buff
plus excellent kiting tools I can see plenty of reasons to take a mage.
Arcane Intellect
doesn't give Int any more. Just a straight mana increase. The only things that increase Int are
and
Mark of the Wild
.

You could run any heroic with any group that has a healer, a tank, and three DPS. CC isn't even necessary by the time you have 346 gear.
Edit: One maximum if you can't control double healers right.

My personal preference?
Protection Warrior
Restoration Druid
Enhancement Shaman (that would be me)
Any spec Mage
- Though maybe not a Hunter/Rogue, if I'm going to be greedy about drops.
... no particular reason for any of them (well, the Mage for Polymorph, and everyone else by taking gear choices into consideration).

Blood DK
Resto Shaman (me)
Feral Druid
Demo Lock
Shadow Priest
Abomination's might, horn of winter, fortitude, shadowform, Demonic pact, Fel intelligence, MotW, leader of the pack, stoneskin totem, windfury totem, glyphed healing stream (resistance)
We also have plenty of interupts for druid, dk and me. I like that combo =)

Blood Death Knight tank (Highest DPS of Tanks usually with high survivability, especially after overgearing instance Also has a brez just in case)
Disc Priest for Smite Heals (Only class that can heal and dps at the same time)
Marksmanship Hunter (Great DPS and able to misdirect for some non sloppy chain pulling)
Fire Mage (Huge AoE dps as well as a great crowd control in polymorph plus ring of frost if neccessary)
Last Spot goes to: Demonology Warlock, Trash pulls will suffer the wrath of hellfire + felstorms, Great single Target as well and a second battle rez

It seems almost everyone likes warlocks in their party, which is strange because its the most underplayed character class in the game...
Hunters seem to be on most peoples list also. I would venture to guess the only reason some might not prefer a hunter are because most are generally retarded. But a skilled hunter is one of the best dps classes in the game.
Also i noticed people prefer ranged dps over melee. The only exceptions to this rule seem to be people that play a melee dps class.

Off-Topic Response:
-_-;;
We hunters have worked really hard to be rid of the retarded members of our class by actively searching out and educating "huntards" so that we are no longer laughed out of trade chat when trying to PuG anything. Hell, Blizz helped by changing us over to focus, the transition was so hard for them that they fled over to ret pallies and DKs. (At least on my server...)
Also, thanks for noticing that a proper hunter is actually an assist, it's nice to see the PR campaign is working! ^_^
On-Topic Response:
My favorite group is thus:
Tank: Prot Pally
Healer: Holy Priest
DPS: Surv Hunter (me)
DPS: Druid, Feral or Boomie
DPS: Mage
This group has multiple CC, interrupts and every buff needed to wipe the floor with the bosses of said heroic.

I do believe that Ret Pallies are quickly becomming the new Huntard of WoW.
That said, i did just group with a huntard in a LFD heroic who wiped the group because he jumped down a ledge without first dismissing his pet, who then took the long way around bringing about 20-30 mobs with it.
