Very true. If it's a set you're going to keep for awhile, you can even throw together a macro so you can switch from your two-hander to your one-and-shield combo in one click.
so true...

It's doable, although I can't see the point in it.
-Leveling will be horrible compared to ret + 2h weapon
-No one (and I do mean no one) will let you stay in a PUG once you say your ret and you are weilding 1h weapon
-Gearing will be extreamely difficult. Tank shields will have high stamina but not the strength you'll need, and caster shields are...caster shields.
But, if you do manage to make this work for you, please post again. I find the idea interesting (although pointless)

I was wondering this myself, I run an 80 prot pally but love the speed you can plow through things as ret. I was curious how SoR would work into a ret build. It kinda makes since with all the str that ret pallies stack and the increased crit chance seeing a 4K SoR pop up in the rotation could more than make up for the loss of DPS from having a 1 hander.
Am I just dreaming on this or is it possoble?
Most of your abilities in a dps rotation (SoB, JoB, Divine Storm, and Crusader Strike) are in some way based on your weapon damage.
So the answer is no.

You will lose weapon DPS, seal damage, CS damage, DS damage and healing, Judgement damage, and DPS itemization that you probably won't get from a shield. But yes, you *can* use a 1h + shield.

14-17k crit from
what
? Paladins haven't had anything that hit that hard since the start of the WotLK beta, when judgements were silly OP.
And no, Ret can't stack enough BV to get 1700 dps from ShoR. Nor do they run at 50% crit with raid buffs.

14k - 17k crit every 6 seconds (1700 DPS from the Shield of Righteousness alone, with a 50% raid-buffed crit rate)...hmmm...yeah, you're right, it sucks.
I call BS! You are lieing. SS(GL with that) or it didn't happen.
On patchy with a hat rogue and tricks in 25 man, possibly. Otherwise, no way in hell. Especially in ret gear.
This is why.

You can read it for yourself. The only possible way to get anywhere near those numbers is as prot in prot gear.

First to clear up something. Haste does increase DPS but mostly just autoattacks. It's not going to send your DPS through the roof, but if you have a choice between say: stamina and haste (I don't know when you would have to make that choice) you would choose haste if you want more DPS. But autoattacks are a small part of Pally Damage so it's better to have Str or even Crit.
To be fair when comparing single hand and 2 hand, most ret spec Pallys will have 3 points in 2-hand weapon specialization. this is going to make the difference considerable. If you respec without them the difference is much less. If only one handed weapon spec were not so deep in the prot. tree:). If you are going Shield Ret you're gonna wanna put those points elsewhere as they'll be doing you no good in 2 Hand Spec.
The
only
big barrier is gear itemization. The stats on one handers mostly favor tanks (stam, def, very little Str) or rogues (lots of Agility) and the stats on shields of course favor tanks (oh yeah and healers, but like their weapon it's mostly just a stat container). If you could get a weapon/shield combination with similar stats to a 2-hander the difference would be negligible. Probably would exceed that of a 2-hander with the added DPS of SoR.
The real issue
: Why did you roll a paladin? I'll assume the reason is you thought it would be fun to play a paladin. I don't know if anyone has ever done this but it is possible figure which class has the highest DPS potential. It would require a lot of experimentation and studying of what gear is currently in the game, but the fact is one would rise to the top. Would we then see raids loaded with nothing but that class for DPS? Are we always going to make the decision the that produces the most DPS? This is a game dammit, it's supposed to be fun. If playing Shield Ret is fun for you then do it.
Finally I must offer this warning
. I am sorry to say this but this is from my own experience: Playing Shield Ret causes wipes in randoms! The only reason it does this is because the other people in the party are so busy tripping on the fact that you are doing something different they can't concentrate on what they are doing. When in the middle of a difficult battle they consider it more important to make stupid comments then to pay attention to the fight. The tank, who was the only one better geared than I, felt it necessary to tell me that I should equip a 2-hander cause I would need more DPS for the next battle, despite the fact that I was out DPSing everyone in the party, After one wipe a hunter (whos DPS was about half mine) had the nerve to call me an "Idoit" (not an Idiot, an Idoit). When I asked him why I had to use a 2-hander all he could say was "That's how it's done, lol". Who's the "Idoit" now?
