Oh they will be...and WoW's number will still be larger.

I haven't tried Rift yet, but I am thinking about it. My only questions stem from:
1) I play a lot at off-peak hours. I have read that the game is almost unplayable because there are not enough people to handle the Rifts. Even though they scale with online population, it has been noted to be an issue where all the quest areas are basically over run. Has anyone experienced that?
Hmmm, these Rift Events sound suspiciously like the sort of thing that WoW had three months ago during the Cataclysm pre-launch events.
And for me, those events (in WoW) lost their sparkle within 48 hours or so. Logging in at off-peak times and having Orgrimmar overrun with elementals and no one around with the energy or ability to do anything about it.... ugh.
I'm sure that the Rift version has a lot more to it than that, but still, I'm sceptical. The "fun factor" seems too dependent on variables that are often out of your control.

I tried Rift about a week ago; spent a few hours playing it with a friend. It's the same thing only with updated graphics, seriously. I didn't find anything new or exciting about Rift to draw me away from WoW other than the fact it's not WoW. The gameplay is the same, the type of people are the same (because most of them came from WoW), it's essentially just another version of WoW. The story wasn't compelling at all although kind of interesting with the Rift events that happen every so often, but again nothing new or major.

5) You were clearly not playing at WoW's launch if you think that Rift had a better launch than WoW did.
Against my better judgement... wut?
Would you like a screenshot of my WoW payment information showing all of the free days I was given because the servers were unstable and the game
completely unplayable
during the months following launch? I've racked up more than a month's worth. Am I the only one that remembers all the rage about them renting out AT&T's servers and how they should buy their own, more stable servers? Rose tinted glasses much?
One thing I have been seriously impressed with is how smooth Rift's launch went. Their first major patch resulted in about 50 minutes downtime total. And the servers were fine for the week after. And I can play on Tuesdays. And every other day of the week. Very,
very
rarely are the servers down for more than 10-20 minutes, and I haven't even seen that lately.
There
are
serious balance issues in Rift. Completely unlike WoW, right? Warlocks totally weren't completely useless early on. And shamans totally weren't bouncing around one shotting people prior to weapon speed normalization with pre-nerf windfury. (/mourn the windfury of ye olden days.)
You know, it's perfectly fine to dislike Rift (or love it, or even be completely apathetic) but the sheer amount of animosity and truth stretching that's going on (on both sides) is kind of silly. Rift isn't a threat to WoW. People that enjoy Rift aren't a threat to you.

I prefer Rift to WoW. It has most things WoW has but better, plus things WoW doesn't have. I also prefer the 4 class, 8 tree system to 10 class, 3 tree, and the graphical style. The only weakness comparing to WoW is the balance, but even that's better than WoW's launch and can only be expected to improve.
Do I think Rift can overcome WoW in subscriber count? Yes, I'm confident that if we compare Rift in 6 years to WoW's numbers now, they'll be larger.
Wow, if you are willing to bet on this, I can have the cash in escrow by tomorrow. You let me know the amount, I'm willing to take all the money out of my IRAs for a guaranteed doubling of my money in 6 years.

As said earlier in the thread; of course RIFT will have larger numbers then WoW
right now
if it's survive for 6 more years.....and Warcraft will have either larger numbers or the roughly the same.

Catacylsm completely ruined WoW for me, so right now its not a hard choice...im playing Rift, watching what happens with WoW but I won't likely check wow out again until the next xpac. Most of what I enjoyed in wow died with the release of catacylsm, game felt like a chore in under a month.
That and nobody I know plays wow anymore, which really makes it difficult to want to go back and check it out.
Rift is keeping me busy right now as its a new/fresh world with new/fresh content, we'll see what kind of lasting power it has.

I haven't played Rift yet myself, but I find myself wary based on what my friends who've played have said.
Two of the three that were in the beta thought it was cool and all, but didn't like it enough to want to buy it.
Then there's the one who does play Rift. In Wrath, he did an amazing job of making his Fire Mage competitive on the DPS charts. Then Wrath launched, and he couldn't seem to grasp that you couldn't just unload on everything and AoE it down. I don't think he'd even put sheep on his bars to use, and it wouldn't matter if he did CC, because he loooooved his Living Bomb. At first, people tried to explain nicely that Cata content isn't really AoE friendly, then when he didn't listen, he started getting booted from groups. It didn't help that when people made suggestions, even nicely, he'd go off on them about how it was his toon, he'd paid for the account and leveled it, he'd do what he wants with it.
He left for Rift, and now he's a HUGE WoW/Blizzard basher. He sneezes, it's Blizzard's fault somehow, and he brags about how no one is telling him how to play his class, etc etc. What I don't think he realizes is that once Rift has been out for awhile and the number crunchers finish crunching, if you don't have the cookie-cutter spec and such, he'll probably end up just like he did in WoW, not getting groups, or if he does, getting booted from them pretty quickly.
I may try it out when they start free trials, just to see the differences and see if it works for me.

Cool opinion bro.
Cool dodge bro.

While it looked interesting, I opted not to try it out. It's a WoW clone. Although it has more options and has a number of differences from WoW, I simply could not imagine starting anew on a WoW clone.
I've put far too much time into WoW to go into something that would not completely take my attention from it.
