Every class can solo all questing content so you really don't have to think about class combinations at all.
Any two can sleepwalk their way through all quests. When questing the class your friend plays does not matter at all.
You might want to get a leveling partner that can tank and/or heal because as dps you will have long dungeon queues. If you want to do a few dungeons on the way that really helps.
Druids and Paladins would be the obvious choice since they can tank and heal, which basically guarantees an instant dungeon as soon as you queue for it but Shaman, Priest or Warrior are also viable. Those can't tank and heal but they can at least do one of those which is enough to get short dungeon queues.

For PvE, hunters are the ultimate soling class.
Stop reading that bullsh!t about classes on a character creation screen. Tank and healer type hybrids are ultimate in soloing for a long time now

Depends what you are intending to solo. Few can match Hunters when it comes to soloing old heroic and raid content. We have a pretty unique set of skills with pet tanking, feign death, range, tranq shot, etc that allow us to combat a lot of boss mechanics that are lethal to other classes.

I somehow managed to see a DK downing sarth and marrowgar before I saw a hunter doing this.
On a personal note, almost every old raid/5 ppl I soloed with my hunter was a facerolling breeze on my DK alt.

Yeah you right, but this thread went to "ultimate" soloing class which is not a hunter whatever tooltips say.
Also yay for your need for challenges and difficulties with getting the essence of a post

On topic: As has been said hunters can compliment most classes nicely and I would advice your friend to pick a class and role that appeals to him. However you could take gearing preferences into acount. Don't get me wrong, this shouldn't be a real reason to pick a particular class, but "Cloth" characters all use different gear than hunters do and you and your friend will have no competition over gear if he plays a clothie. The same applies to "Plate" classes as they start out wearing Mail when you can only wear leather, and move to Plate when you get to wear Mail, and they prefer Strength over Agility. Rogues and Feral Druids want the gear you want at low levels, and part of it after level 40 also (rings, cloaks, trinkets, etc). Enhancement Shamans typically want all gear you want. If your friend plays a shaman he can still go after spell power gear if he specs Elemental (caster dps) or Restoration (healing).
About the discussion on hunter soloing capabilities: The information on class in the character creation screen is meant to give beginners an idea of what the class they pick will be like and doesn't necessarily apply to late-game hunters. If it says 'hunters are an excellent solo class' this is entirely correct in my opinion; it's an easy class to start with if you're new to WoW and/or to MMORPGs, because you have the pet and therefore do not need to be hit at all if you pick targets one by one.
