That rift invasion sounds awfully like a beefed up version of the old elemental invasions in vanilla no?
Sort of like, except they happen all over the world, and they can and will actually take out quest hubs, and there are decent rewards for defeating them.
It's a little more like the naxxramas invasion event, in some ways, only it's just there all the time, with enough variety in the events to make it stay sorta awesome at least so far.
I can see the rifts becomming very annoying after a while, because at first it might be fun fighting them, but when you just want to hand in your quest and you have to fight off an invasion to do so, it doesn't sound like a lot of fun.
Or the time when you need to leave soon and you can't because your stuck in combat.

Well I have been playing beta all day... again... until the other half kicked me off :\
It's that addictive and that's with my poxy, poor graphic quality on my laptop. It's nothing really like WoW to tell you the truth. It looks and feels different and those that claim the odd bit and piece looks like WoW, well, I think the large portion of EQ players on Rift atm would heartily disagree.
So far, I've found the people to be mature and helpful. The Public Raids are working excellently, even when the US is asleep. I'm listening to people all day say that they are not only trying classes that they always regarded in other games as being no-go's for them but they're loving it!
The scene it's much, much more adult. The graphics reminds me of another game which from memory got banned here in Australia (I'm googling my guts out and can't find which game I'm thinking of). The theme is dark, realistic, well detailed.
Sure, there are bits and pieces that could do with a tweak, if only to learn from the mistakes of other games but overall, the concept and the depth is very, very good. If you've only just glanced at it or only played an hour or so, like all MMO's, you need to give this more time and effort to see just how much it offers - things that other games are still trying to perfect, so far, it appears to have already figured out.
Certainly, my opinion may change over the coming months however, at this time, I'm happily looking for the best pre-order/collectors deal I can find and happy to pay the $59 for the next 6 months.
For those that are grappling with the 'letting go' of old/current games - my 2c, keep your current subs up for 6 months, if you can afford it. Then give Rift a red hot go as they say and re-evaluate it in 6 months time. As someone said in chat today, if you're already in the beta, well, you really already know that your current game may not be doing everything for you anymore.
7 Sins Banned because of high impact of sexual references.
50 Cent: Bulletproof Banned because of high impact violence and cruelty. A censored version was later released.
Blitz: The League Banned because of drug use related to awards.
BMX XXX Banned because of high impact sexual references. Censored version later released
CrimeCraft Banned due to the use of drugs as incentives or rewards.
Dark Sector Banned because of high impact violence. A censored version was later released.
Dreamweb Banned because of a scene of sexualized violence. However, the game was censored, and re-released with a more lucrative M rating in 1996
The Getaway Originally released uncut with a MA15+, it was later resubmitted and banned due to a scene of detailed torture. A censored version omitting this scene was later released with a MA15+. The sequel was released uncut.
Left 4 Dead 2 Refused classification due to relentless gory violence. An edited version has been released using the German cut. This version of game is now less violent than its predecessor which was released with a MA15+.
Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude Banned because of sexuality and nudity in relation to incentives and rewards.
Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure Originally released with a MA15+, Federal Attorney-General Phil Ruddock used his power to later appeal the decision to get it banned for glorification of graffiti.
Manhunt Originally rated MA15+ but Federal Attorney-General Phil Ruddock later appealed the rating thus being banned afterwards because of high-impact violence and cruelty.
NARC Banned because of drug use related to incentives.
NecroVisioN Banned because of relentless gory violence. A censored version was later released with a lucrative M rating.
Postal 2 Banned because of gross, abhorrent content (urination, high impact violence, animal cruelty, homophobia, etc.)
Phantasmagoria Banned because of high impact violence, cruelty, and a scene of sexual violence involving rape. A censored version was later released.
Reservoir Dogs Banned because of high impact violence and cruelty.
Risen Banned because of sexual activity and drug use related to incentives.
Shellshock 2: Blood Trails Banned because of high impact violence.
Silent Hill: Homecoming Banned because of very disturbing content specifically the scene involving drilling into body parts. Konami has since modified this part of the game to meet MA15+ guidelines.
Singles: Flirt Up Your Life Banned because of sexuality and nudity in relation to incentives and rewards.
Soldier of Fortune: Payback Banned because of high impact violence involving dismemberment. Activision has since modified the game to meet MA15+ guidelines.
Voyeur Originally rated MA15+ but later appealed and banned because of a scene of explicit sexual dialogue involving incest.
Every game currently banned in Australia

That hasn't been my experience. They don't take a long time to fight off, the rewards are good, and it adds a bit of variety. I could see how it could get annoying if it were at the level of, say, random encounters in old console RPGs. (Step step encounter, step encounter, step step encounter...)
That they vary between zones, and there's a fair number of them (and "interesting new rift events" are an ongoing dev activity) helps a fair bit.
Basically, in the course of clearing out my quests for the first big zone, I probably came back to quest hubs for hand-ins 20 times, and had to clear invasions to do so maybe 2. It's frequent enough to shake things up.

does rift have their own annoying creatures like murlocs?
Hmm. Haven't seen them yet.
So, I had my first quest where a creature didn't always have a body part. Trolls. Brains. I was not sure whether they were just messing with me. Then I got the next quest in that chain, for which I needed troll hearts. They all dropped two. Yeah, the devs are just messing with me.

Every game currently banned in Australia
Yeah I still can't remember what it was called but I remember seeing in a magazine not that long ago - the graphics were very dark with things looking incredibly twisted and deformed... That's how I see Rift (in a good way) - the genre/theme/style? is dark which I like.

In finishing, I'm going to venture to say that you can't "kill" a good MMO which is what WoW is/was. It'll go the way of EQ over the long run. In other words, as long as it's making money vs losing money it'll stay up. You'll know that WoW is reaching a critical point but not dying necessarily when they start reducing or merging servers, but it won't just die.
That's a good point. I think people get a little excitable with almost this thought that 12 million people will up and cancel their WoW subscription and miraculously appear on another MMO (whatever that may be).
Everyone knows WoW has a shelf life, even Blizzard has said as much. My expectation is one more expansion and then you'll see a real slow down in development etc. They *may* go back and redo Outlands and Northrend but I very highly doubt it. The game will exist, but servers will start reducing as people move on. And it'll go the way of every other MMO, which is fine. It's silly to think it won't.

wow isnt dying.....and im more or less hoping that rift wont be good, because as a devoted wow player, i dont want to just, well you know, drop all my things and go to another mmo. abandon wow, my wow characters, the wow story, the playstyle, for another mmo.
i dont like that. so im hoping it doesnt do too good. or maybe it being good will give blizzard more reason to do better things with wow maybe. improve wow more.
Its good and it will be good don't say you don't want it to be good just because you want to play wow., If you want to play wow play wow just don't say something about anouther game because you like doing the other.... Its like saying I like Beef I want all the Chicken and Fish to go bad and kill people so that no one eats it.

No offence but 10 minutes to play ANY game is hardly giving it a fair go. Hell, you wouldn't have made it past the initial starting point.
Also, these ongoing diatribes about the UI are getting a little, well... *yawn*
Either:
a) you dont really want to play anything else, you just wanted to see what all the fuss was about and really will never have a change of opinion. This is fine, some people like wearing the same jeans for 12 months - more power to you.
b) looking for small things to justify your own decisions - that's also fine, but whining that a UI is copied when we all know, in the scheme of things, WoW is not the beginning nor the end of MMOs, is getting rather tiring.
c) trolling...
I've played WoW for more years than I care to remember and it's a great game. However, I am mature enough to explore new options, critique them in a balanced way and give them a fair go. Sure, Rift has some things it could clean up on, so does WoW, so do all games. I'm not suggesting that any game can or should be an earth-shattering experience for all people and everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
But the UI/WoW copy/too much like my old jeans wha wha is getting tiring....
For me, I've played every day in this beta and still playing WoW at the same time. They both offer me something different. I'm inclined to give Rift 6 months worth of subscription to see how they pan out during that time. For those that are critical, think of it this way - you are placing the same expectations on a new born baby as one would on a 6 year old.... kinda not a level playing field is it?

The UI does start out fairly similar to the UIs of a whole lot of other games, yes. Why? Because there's no reason to change it just to make it "feel different". Lower learning curve is good.
The game itself is similar in some ways to WoW, and to EQ, and to WAR, and so on. But... It feels, to me, a lot like playing WoW with all the stupid design mistakes fixed. So I'm very happy with it.

After a good time spent on rift I can tell you right now Its not a rip of of WoW. Sure there are some similarities but again go buy a pair of Levi jeans and Wrangler Jeans and complain that one company copied the others design.... They didn't its just that there is a limited number of ways you can make them. Same goes with Rift. You say the UI is the same well here is something that WoW doesn't have a 100% customizable UI Its like Bartender in wow but its standard. The zones don't share anything from wow they are all different in areas that wow Wow used alot of flat terrain when designing zones with just slight up hill and downhill areas with very few features Rift has alot of up and down areas where you have to wind your way around a giant mountain to reach the top...
Anyway this thread is dead mostly but I just wanted to put out these few comments.

I enjoyed Rift during the time that I played it. I got to level 39 and just couldn't convince myself to go any further because Trion was not doing the things they promised to do and were doing the things they said they wouldn't do.
Rift is a different game that suffers from all the same issues.
