Why does Moonkin form exist?

Every druid form seems to have an associated ancient with the exception of Moonkin form unless I am mistaken.
A friend once told me that Moonkin form is the form blessed to the messengers of Elune by her. So Moonkin form is like a missionary who spread Elune's or Shuna's message? If this is the case, why this particular bird form? is it because the bird ancient was also a messenger of sorts?
Am I missing something or did I hit the nail on the head?

Full-grown wildkin exceed 10 feet in height and weigh between 1,000 and 3,000 pounds, and sometimes even more
Blizzard, let me bring a 10-feet, 3-tonne spellcasting monstrosity to BGs!

You'd actually only be 1.3636363636 (repeating of course) tonnes on the heavy side. 3 metres tall for what it's worth.

Dang, I misread "pound" for "kilogram".
Seriously America, go metric already.
