If you really want to raid, your best bet is to join a guild that raids.
This. You can probably pug a raid right now on most servers - but you'll probably be rewarded with and rather than any good loot.
Our guild is just getting ready to break into raiding in the next week or so, as we're all to the point where we're at ~i346 average. We tried going in to BWD two weeks ago for fun, knowing we weren't going to really get anywhere - and even the three trash pulls before Magmaw wiped us eight to ten times, heh.

One thing more to note about guild raids is the learning curve. i am in a "semi" raiding guild, where we only go twice a week, but we work hard at it. We're 5/12 currently which puts us.. I dunno... middle third of the pack? Anyway we're not at all leader-board minded, we just do as we do.
The learning curve is mean to you up front, but it immediately backs off. You meet Magmaw and he eats your entire guild. You will wipe-wipe-wipe. Get to mangle, wipe. Get to the second mangle. Wipe. Go oom, wipe. Then you will kill him. Next week, its the same, but maybe 2 wipes fewer. At some point, it just clicks.
The fourth or so kill week for Maggie, you wipe the first time because you hunter got caught in the parasites and you all laugh at him. Then Magmaw just..... dies the second go-round. It just becomes part of the routine. You are on top of the curve for THAT boss.
Of course, now Omni is eating your guild for 2 hours each night :) Rinse and repeat.
/it comes with a few weeks of progressing, DO NOT be discouraged. And DO NOT care what other guilds can do the first week.

Trash in new raids is "epic". if you can get through trash you have a good shot at bosses or at least you probably won't feel like you're totally banging your head against the wal
Agreed. The farther you go, the more "trash" you encounter that isn't at all 'trashy'. Heroics reestablished the principles of CC'ing and kill orders. Raids have unique mechanics. Magmaw's trash has an interesting kill-us-together, oh-and-we're-going-to-swap-targets-based-on-position piece to them. Atramedes' trash has that shared ability changeover, and of course the beautiful-to-behold descending hammer of doooooooom.
Plenty of odd bits and abilities, absolute CRAPTONS of health (Ivoroc has over 5m HP on 10 man, and he is considered 'trash' too).
And I agree with the starting place. Go kill Algaloth in Baradin Hold. Most approachable and most forgiving raid boss in cataclysm. Let him be your immediate bellwether.

Exactly.
As an example, here's Magmaw's trash:
They were meleeing my (admittedly undergeared) tank for ~10-12k per strike. Tanks have to pull the adds to opposite sides of the room. The DPS groups up in the middle, but off the line between the tanks. Every 30 seconds or so, the mobs will wipe aggro and charge toward the farthest target from them (in this case, the tank), cleaving anything in their path.
When they reach the new target, they immediately have something crazy like 150k threat on it (which is why having someone
other
than the tank catch it is insta-doom). They then stun the tank for ~6 seconds and proceed to do a frontal blade cone that will do around 150k damage over that 6 seconds, none of which can be avoided since the tank is stunned. Tanks basically have to blow a cooldown just as the mob reaches them.or die/be dropped below 25% health.
