I lvled as prot the whole way from 10 to 80, and again from 80 to 85 - it might be a bit slower that going ret, but i still did the 80-85 lvling in somewhere under 30 hours, and along the way I did almost every instance available to me, so its not like it will take forever to do it -
One thing you should know though, is that when you do get to 85 pretty much everyone will love you for knowing exactly how to tank the instances - you will run into alot more greif at 85 if you haven't tanked something before, as opposed to doing the instances and learning the tactics while lvling
I highly recommend you go prot the whole way

Levelling from 1-80 as prot is very quick as long as you round up mobs for all the kills quests and kill them 4 or 5 at a time.
When I leveled my pally (before dungeon finder) I solo'd dungeons from 1-50 and had a blast - with all the buffs, heirlooms and WoG heals, this should be easily do-able today. The XP is great and all the loot is yours!
80-85, I found the high hp and spacing of mobs made prot levelling less effective, so I slapped on some ret gear for levelling up, but the tank spec is still useful whenever you'll be facing multiple mobs or elites because ret is rather squishy near the endgame.

I have noticed that Ret DPS is crap too...My pally is lvl 61 atm and my prot actually seems more effective for lvling. The real problem for Ret is that holy power takes so long to compile, as Crusader Strike is the only move (that I'm aware of) that gives Holy Power reliably. Also, the abilities that you do have are just not that hard-hitting to begin with. Prot is amazing, I rest my case.
Once you get 2/2
Divine Purpose
your holy Power gets generated pretty darned fast indeed. Just something to consider.
Also,
Divine Storm
is pretty rubbish for levelling really. It hits for such a low amount that it's often simpler to just do without pressing it.
I chose it for, well, to be honest there's not much else to choose that's PvE-focussed once you've got the other talents. Filler basically. I suppose it could be used as a fast way to generate AOE Holy Power, but Holy Wrath does the same and doesn't put Crusader Strike on cooldown.

Level as Protection. First, you can't beat leveling as what you expect to play end game. The experience is immeasurable. Second, as a
Protection Paladin
you can solo 3 man Elite quests with ease. Third, you can PvP and do some decent damage as Prot. Fourth, when you queue as a tank you almost guarantee instant groups with the LFD tool. Check out the guide in the link below, it may help.

Hey, I've just started a ret paladin 3 days ago and I just hit 65. I just recently bought my duel talent tree but I'm debating on whether to go holy or prot as off spec.
I wouldn't mind doing prot since it seems fun and something different to do, and also your the main guy during instances. The only thing holding me back though is that I've never tanked before, and from what I've seen tanks take a lot of heat from other players...
Having never tanked and being lvl 65, where people generally expect you to have a good handle on your class spec, is what worries me haha. This is also my first run past 60 so all instances past mana-tombs would be new to me.
All these things are making me hold from prot, however, if i was to go prot I feel now would be better then later at 85 where things are tougher and more complex i'm guessing?
I'm about to read the prot link from Grymborn' sig above me....and a few other tanking threads, but do you guys have any helpful tips or places to read about how to be a good tank, and learning the basic steps? also what is your opinion on what I mentioned at first - is it not too bad to start tanking now?
thanks for the help!
