Only gratz-worth achievements:
... wall of elitist jerkism removed ...
You "gz" people for something not every third player has...
no, you do it when you feel it's really an achievement for that person.
If it's his first toon, reaching lvl20 is quite an achievement, if it's his 5th, lvl70 is rather trivial.
If someone's never done cata raids before, downing a cata raid boss is quite an achievement, doing it for the 50th time is not.

I have quite a few people in my guild ignored because they use auto grats for EVERYTHING and it just gets annoying. Haircut and a shave? Grats. Honorable kill? Grats. Got bank deposit space? Grats. I hate it.
Edit: These are the same people who have the "hello" addons set up. Every time one of the 500 people in the guild signs on a character or switches to an alt 4 of them spam "Hey. Hello. What's up?" It's sad that people have to pretend to care about other people. When I see an impressive achievement or a friend signs on I will say something but to set up an addon just to pretend you care about everyone is sad.

I've always found auto gratsers to be offencive tbh. If you actually care you would take the time to congrats them.

250000 Honorable Kills
meh.....I really dont care how many HK's you have. If HK's were awarded only for killing blows, that would be a different story. You can run around in circles in a BG, and do nothing at all, and rack up HK's. All this achievement proves is that you spent a lot of time in BG's....nothing else.

I guess it depends, sometimes I find them super annoying and other times I don't.
For example in a new guild I'm in the guild leader has one of those "auto hello" things. He has it set to say Hey <name> always and I think it ingnores people when they switch between toons on the same account (maybe they have to be his realid friends? not sure how it works but i know it doesn't spam when someone relogs the same account or the same toon several times in a row)
I don't mind his, he's usually really busy but if he can he'll say hi n vent too.
The ones that grats for everything are annoying, the ones that say HI every time anyone logs are annoying, but apparently you can tone them down and in the words of the guild leader "I really do want to say hello, I just can't always type it, and it seems to get others talking after the person responds"

I used to use an addon called SpeakinSpell. You could set it up for a variety of things to say for things like spellcasts, battle rez, summoning a mount/pet and so on. You could also set it up to congratulate for achievements and "dinging". I used to have a variety of things that would be said for both achievements and "dinging" instead of the basic "gratz". I tried to make them funny comments and my guildies got a kick out of it. One night they had a little too much fun spamming gchat with "ding" just to make my addon go off to see all the different comments.
However, I no longer use it. Not because it got annoying from spamming gchat, but because it got annoying having to update it every patch or maintenance day that broke it. It is very customizable and would take forever to get it all set back up across 7 different toons (a lot of the spellcast comments were class/race specific).
I liked it not so much for the ease, or laziness of it, but for that fact that it would congratulate someone for something they did when I might have missed it by fighting or being afk or something. I saw nothing wrong in acknowledging something someone did automatically. It might have been a trivial achievement to me, but to them maybe not and they might have enjoyed getting it noticed, even if it was an automatic response.

It's seemingly an okay necro, since report was declined. Sooo....
I'm with thebluuewyvern. Addons like this are impersonal and not really a wonderful social addon. Then again, I'm in a small guild (20-25 active people, and not achievement spammers in the least bit since it's mostly a core raiding team).
Ding.

Then why are you on a forum designed to help players of WoW?
Telling the OP that his idea creates an impersonal, insincere feeling (which it does) is helping him. It's not helping him in the way he originally requested, but it is helping him.
Insincere? Depends on how you look at it. Would someone who doesn't care, or isn't sincere, bother looking for something like this to begin with?
If they don't care enough to type it in themselves and to determine which achievements are worth typing it in for, I'd say they want to appear to care without actually caring. I'd say they care more about other people thinking "That guy is really nice!" than actually wishing congratulations on people who deserve it.
Abbreviating it to "Grats/z" is bad enough.
and I would say that you are an $%^&*!@ jumping to conclusions. some people like me have physical disabilities(My eyesight was damaged by an explosion) and don't notice achievements when they pop-up but would still like to acknowledge people's achievements. I for one would love to find an addon that works like Autogratz used to but unfortunately flamers like you who can't keep you opinions to yourselves have rendered using any type of forum to find one that still works near impossible because they are all just flooded with the same bull$%^& responses that you felt the need to waste time with. So thank you for being a judgemental #$%^&*! and making it that much harder for those of us with physical disabilities to find a way to acknowledge our guildmates achievements like everyone else.
I can't think of anything more annoying or insincere than addons like this. I know this is a necro'ed thread, but I had to reply cause it did give me a good laugh cause it brought back memories of my guild right after BC came out. There was one guildie in particular who had installed a mod that auto congratulated in guild chat every time some one said "ding" in guild chat. Apparently the mod worked by recognizing when the word ding was typed in chat, even if it was part of a longer word. The rest of the guild abused the heck out of that flaw by making sure our convos were filled with "ding" words...grinding, grounding, pounding, raiding, etc etc, making his mod fill the chat with grats. He got so pissed he uninstalled the mod. Which is what we were all going for. :)
I can't think of anything more annoying and insincere than people like you who ignore those of us with physical disabilities that prevent us from noticing things in the chat window and insisting that things that you personally don't like are wrong and shouldn't exist. You and everyone else like you who don't think about the people who may require help with things like acknowledging achievements are a bunch of self centered !@#$%^&s.
I have resurrected this thread, because I joined a big guild to take advantage of their level 25 perks. I made a new toon on a different server to play around and see what the culture was like there.
Several of the members of this guild have add-ons that say...
"Hey, I was hoping you'd be online today," or "Welcome back, . I missed you."
And they have ones that announce "Congratulations for !"
I have observed this happening for everything, no matter how mundane. And when several guildies log in at once or a raid achievement occurs for the guild, the add-on spams it on /g for every achieving member. And most of the time, this is the only activity in /g.
It's ridiculous. And it's indefensible. To echo the sentiment of several other commenters, if you don't want to take the time to personally tell someone they're appreciated, then don't do it at all. Please, for the sake of humanity, stop using robots to perform tasks reserved for actual human beings.
Having this addon is not indefensible and I will defend it right now. I came here trying to find one that still works because of my physical disability(see my other responses) but like everyone else on this forum all you did was make it near impossible for me by filling the comments about these types of addons with nothing but mindless blather about how people shouldn't use it because you don't like it. so thanks for that.(##RESPBREAK##)2060##DELIM##Sas148##DELIM##This thread is quite old... please be mindful of the date when you decide too personally respond to other's comments. Also, click the 'edit' button when you want to add more information to your post, consecutive replies when no one else has said anything should be condensed into just the one reply. Thank you.
