While I don't use any addons, I think it's okay if you only congratulate major achievements like Level 10, 20, 30, mount achievements, Loremaster, title achievements, etc. I'm not sure if addons let you customize which achievements to congratulate though.
I remember in my last guild there the guild master and his girlfriend used an addon and it was very obvious. Once I told them I could tell they were using an addon and how their hearts were not in it, they did stop using it. I'd rather miss a "congrats" here and there than be a robot.
But like I said if the addon let's to configure everything, I bet you could pull it off and no one would know you were using one.

Just to add to the already derailed flamefest, I used to have some guildies that had an auto-gratz addon and it was really annoying for me because somtimes they would gratz while we knew they were afk. It just seemed so idiotically impersonal! I have made a "/g Gratz" macro and put it on a sidebar. If it's just a "Oh, cool" achievement then I'll hit the button. If it deserves more than just a Gratz then I'll type in the appropriate response as soon as I'm OOC. Some things just shouldn't be fully automated.

I've thought about getting an autogratz addon before, because I'm in a pvp guild and most achieves that you get while in a guild like this are worth a gratz, but at the same time....It's a pvp guild. Odds are, I'm in the middle of a pvp fight and I can't type it in time for it to not sound awkward.
Then I remember that I can't type it in less than a second, and just do it while I'm kiting someone :P

I'm not a fan of the fully automated addons, but I see nothing wrong with a /g grats! macro to use when in combat or doing something that makes typing difficult at that moment. I wish to congratulate them, and i do, I just do it by hitting the button rather than taking my hands off my hotkeys/mouse to type.
That said, I usually type it out if I'm not doing something like combat or trying to grab quest items off the ground.

Then why are you on a forum designed to help players of WoW?
I think you'll find this is WoW General. WoW Help is next door >>>

I don't see any flaming of the OP here. I see opinion A, opinion B (isn't that what the forums are? to discuss opinions?) and I even see some people suggesting alternative ways to achieve what he wants if the can't find the addon. I've also seen people with firsthand knowledge with the addon attempt to help.
Perhaps the OP hasn't thought of the way an automated grats system will come across. It's painfully obvious when those addons are used, especially when they happen even if the person using the addon is AFK. And as others in this thread with firsthand knowledge of what it's like when others in their guild have used said addon have pointed out, it's annoying and comes across as insincere. I haven't seen anyone who brought up opinion B
flame
the OP and call him all kinds of names for asking, I see them warning him of how it comes across so that he can take that into consideration if he hasn't already.
I personally prefer the alternative method... if you really don't want to type it out each time that's cool, so macro it. Then you have control over when you use it so it's more meaningful. Perhaps major milestones, not "200 fish" or "a shave and a haircut!" kinds, you know? The addon doesn't differentiate. No one is saying the
OP
is insincere, they're pointing out how he may come across if he uses the addon.
If I were the OP and had the good intentions of wanting to congratulate my guildies so that I never miss congratulating someone and was looking for the addon to achieve this, that's great and all, but if I hadn't thought about how impersonal it would come across and I was reading this thread, I would think twice about installing it now.
The OP has plenty of help to choose from in this thread. I wish him the best in whatever decision he makes, whether it's to track down the addon, use a macro, or not do it at all. At least now he leaves the discussion more informed.

I think a macro is a great idea for the OP. They can then choose when and if to use it. Rather than an addon that rattles off messages automatically.
I always make effort to grats a guild member if they get an achievement. I think it lends to good guild relations. It is not nice to spend time on an achievement only to have nobody acknowledge what you did.

For the anti-social and asocial gamer, like myself, gratzing of any kind is just an annoyance.
I would as soon see my fellow gamers die in fire then have them waste the keystroke in order to gratz me for something so useless as exploring deepholm while I scout the terrain for the next heartblossom.
To grats people for every single thing is a by-product of social retardation, and the automatic addons that do it only make it worse, by making one's zombie-cattle like behaviour automatic, so one has to think even less. I suppose it saves them less time thinking about that so they can move on seeing how else they can be carried.
So for you gratz'ers you can shove your gratz the same place you stuff your gerbils. It is a waste of time and of useful chat lines. People that the social non-sense too far, so far that people are expecting it and the hand outs that come with it and they get mad when it they dont get. It's that kind of social idiocy that makes the game hard to enjoy.

They took the time to download the addon, and when your fighting something like Heroic SFK, I can't type. It'd waste precious interupts.

Just out of curiosity (since I've seen this as a reason why people use the addon), is it
really necessary
that the guildmate get an
immediate
"grats" when they accomplish something? I mean, if you're in the middle of a dungeon, a heartfelt "grats" for it won't be less meaningful if you can't type it immediately and instead have to wait until between pulls or even after your instance if it's a boss fight. "Sorry, was in a boss fight. Congrats on that awesome achievement!" even a half hour later isn't going to be any less appreciated. I also don't get the need to "grats" people on
every single achievement
, but that's another can of worms.
Truly curious, and not "flaming" either side, just something I wonder. If it's your thing, great. Just don't be surprised if it's not appreciated or if it turns people off. Then again, some people love the praise. *shrug*

Make a macro that says /g Grats and put it on your action bars?
This is it :D

I don't understand why people are so enraged by "auto-gratzers." You're acting like you're owed something. You're not owed a heartfelt congratulation, so if someone gives you an auto-gratz instead, why are you complaining?

Either take the time to type it out or don't say anything IMO.
Do they owe you that time?
