Just on the 'failure' idea; part of a good player is being able to adapt to situations, thinking on their feet. There will be a time in every players dungeon-running life, where they will need to do something like that, or CC a mob whilst in combat whilst out of melee range of tank, etc. These could be the difficult to obtain, but are valid achievements and player-skill markers nonetheless.
Definitely, that's primarily why I rethought the comment in the context of a personal, skill-proving achievement. Thinking about it on a higher scale, it does not encourage partial failure at all. On the contrary, the ability to salvage the group after what could very well have been a wipe speaks volumes about an individual's skill as a player.

Mine too.
However, having given a little more thought to my last post, it
will
need careful balance. My idea about Rupture uptime seemed like a good one at the time, but the thing is, we don't want the achievement to control how the class is played - at the minute, Rupture IS a defining mechanic for mutilate rogues, however there's nothing to say that in the future that Rupture will be used at all in "normal" rotations.
The fine line that would need to be walked, is in improving the skill of the player, whilst not actually telling them how to play. If this were to become a supported feature, it would also need to be balanced so that a). It didn't need constant maintenance; and b). So that it didn't unduly influence players into a particular style of play. It needs to be a guide, rather than a crutch.
Could change to poison debuff uptime, or bleed uptime? Neither of those are likely to change for Rogues in terms of Blizzard's 'class objectives'.
Good thought. Focusing on core abilities that are unlikely to change in any major fashion in the future would be another key design point.
Anyone know a good resource on LUA? :P Maybe I can teach myself.

I'm looking into the LUA stuff now, but I'm at work and don't have a lot of time. If you search LUA from wowwiki, then there are some links that look half reasonable. I'll report back later...
Ditto.
The actual language itself looks pretty simple to use.
Here
is a basic demo that lets you enter Lua and then check the output.
My thought is: Looking at the Lua in a DPS/combat log add-on, such as Recount, might give a decent idea of how it captures what it captures from the combat log, which is where I'd think we'd look for the output we want to measure.
