Great post, +1 internets.
I always used to inform pug groups that I was a fresh tank, and to take it easy on me -- make sure not to AOE too hard, make sure to nuke the same target as me, follow kill orders, etc.
Nine out of ten times, you'll find most people immediately open up when you admit your own weakness and shortcomings -- as soon as they hear someone else say, "I'm not a pro, guys," they'll immediately open up and admit that they, too, are not. It makes the group much more understanding, and everyone will have a lot more fun.
Too many people put up a front of, "I know what I'm doing," and as soon as someone that DOES know what they are doing calls out a newer player, they get defensive. It's a part of elitism that can really bring down pug groups.

I have found most of the time that if you are new to something, it's best to not admit it all. Most of the time, if the tank says "I'm new to tanking.", I see a Vote to Kick option up within 3-5 seconds. If they are new to tanking and don't say anything, their boot comes from a lack of performance ability.
I've yet to see that happen in any regular run I've done. In a Heroic? If you walk up to a boss and go, "lol wuts this guy do?" I would try to Vote Kick as well. If you're in a Heroic, you should at least know what the boss did in Regular, and have a decent understanding. Perhaps a, "This guy any different on Heroic?"
I've also seen plenty of tanks just do poorly and either get vote kicked or have the healer drop group. But those are the tanks that were bound to fail from the start -- bad specs, bad gear, etc. Rarely is it because they are a good player who is just new at tanking.

I would normally agree with this, but Cata dungeon finder is a bit borked at the moment. My pally didn't queue for dungeons until after a few of the normal dungeons fell off the list. And considering the ilvl reqs and entrance discovery reqs, and the relatively short time leveling to 85, it's quite possible to unintentionally skip a normal dungeon or two.

True enough. I've only done Throne of the Tides twice, but Grim Batol almost fifteen. Great point.

And just because a healer drops group doesn't always mean you are jacked up. Some heals are still in a wrath mindset where they have to pay very little attention. A tank in appropiate gear in a level appropiate instance should be fine. If I think my gear may be borderline based on group comp, I'll drop group or let the group know my concerns and see if they wanna go at it. Sometimes you'll never know if you don't try.
