My tanking gear is pretty sub-par (251/264) but I have pretty much taken swipe off my bars. I use it once on initial aggro (so the mobs dont go for the healer (which doesnt even work sometimes if they put out a big heal on the pull)) and then just tab target mangle/maul/lacerate.
I have a tank of each class and bears AoE tanking is broken. Even my warrior in blues and welfare epics holds better AoE threat. Yeah maybe you think swipe is equivalent to Thunderclap (it isnt TC hits harder) but even as a warrior you have more tools than a bear, SW, Cleave, BnT.
I'm not QQing. I have very few problems in heroics except when idiot dps pull mobs or single target other targets or they vastly out gear me (or are arcane mages/frost dks).

A reason why some people might think that Thunderclap hits as hard as Swipe is that on my screenshots earlier in this thread, the damage was somewhat similar. But they neglect the fact that the average item level of gear on my druid is 270, while on my warrior it is 230.

From the experiences Im having in low level dungeons with the Wowhead Massive :P
You mean that
1
RFC run we had? o_O
I'd say let's go WC and BFD first before passing judgement :p Although we might not get to that before Cata ...
Anyways, shammy is 21 now, I think that's a nice level to go into WC :) So maybe I'll wait for you slackers to catch up and hopefully we can get a bit more dungeons going tomorrow night!
(o crap, derailing!)
It'll be odd tanking dungeons where you need to learn how to handle trash again, which mob exactly to CC and stuff. Definitely won't be the fastest way to level i'm sure :p So most people in my guild probably won't be doing the normal modes and just quest all the time to get prepped for raiding asap. Shame really I prefer doing the dungeons at non-max level as well. But I refuse to pug it! /shudder

By the way, there already are two blue posts stating that Swipe is "working as intended". One is on the german european forums, where people have made a topic in the bug report section, stating that "swipe got decreased by 80% instead of 37%", the other one is on the US forums, in a topic that is full of druid complaints.
Personally, i believe the blue posters that replied on the forums have no clue what they are talking about. I would prefer a guy with actual brain and at least as much game development experience as i have to reply.

Actually, when there is a bug report topic stating "Swipe got reduced by 80% instead of 37%", and they post "Working as intended in it.", they are actually confirming that Swipe has been decreased by 80%. Anyone disagrees?

I think the blue responses we've gotten so far are "swipe is working as currently designed, the tooltip was wrong". Standard QA response.
I don't think we've gotten an answer yet to the question of "why do druids get such sub-par tanking talents and abilities prior to 66 and 81, and what are you doing about it?".
Since I suspect that is going to require them to change the talent tree around for Feral and probably move some skills earlier in the leveling process, that will take longer.

Asking GMs about game mechanics is usually a pretty bad idea. I've had GMs tell me all sorts of random crap about why things were doing something and then get offended when I tell them that I know what they're asserting is impossible.
Example: Somehow a friend of mine's chain lightning jumped to a friendly faction NPC who was stuck in a cage. He aggroed us which turned all the friendly NPCs against us (like, the whole Alliance faction). I was stuck with everyone in all of my towns as red to me for a significant amount of time, so I put in a ticket. The GM told me it was addons. I'm not joking. And then he got haughty when I told him that wasn't possible, and told me that he does this for a living, he knows better than I do. Right.

Since a hotfix to Swipe does not seem to be in our near future, I would like to suggest that some of you might try what I have been doing. Is it ideal? No. Does it fix our problem? No. Does it help? Yes.
Take your 2pts out of Brutal Impact & put them in Endless Carnage
(I know, but stay with me here)
Get Pulverize up ASAP as normal
Use the full duration of Pulverize to spread Lac+Maul on as many mobs as possible
Keep Lac at 3 stacks on as many mobs as possible and only Pulverize to refresh the buff (lowest health priority)
Use your Mangle procs on the mobs your are closest to losing threat on
Treat Swipe like Demo Roar on pull
(Swipe's threat generation just isn't worth a GCD to me right now)
Use Feral Charge+{Mangle, Maul} anf Skull Bash+{Mangle,Maul} as alternate taunts should a DPS pull threat on a mob and Growl is on CD
Once we get Thrash, or Swipe is fixed, the extra uptime on Pulverize may not be needed and we can use Brutal Impact again. I just feel that right now our threat generation > convenient interrupt. This does require you to pay close attention to plates, but most people here are well beyond that.
I actually think this might be how Blizzard wants us to tank now, which is fine; but I do hope that they rebalance Swipe damage. It doesn't need to be anywhere near as powerful as it was, but it should be on par with the threat output of the abilities the other tank classes have available at lvl80. I do not believe that Thrash is the panacea that some people seem to think it is. I believe that it should help, but not solve the problem. Thrash along with a balanced Swipe should be fine I think.
The one thing that this does do that I am a little grateful for is that it pushes all the people that just want to play the FotM away from the spec. Unlike when we were competitive with DPS as well as healing ourselves as well as our healers were while still being able to hold packs of mobs with relative ease. All while being able to dish out single target TPS untouchable by DPS. It not hard to see why Blizzard over reacted in under tuning us, and as a result the "working as intended" responses may be correct. That doesn't necessarily mean that this is intended to work this way permanently.

Thorns actually do twice the damage than Swipe does, even though i have 0 spellpower items in my tanking set. I recommend using Glyph of thorns... i mean, what other Major glyphs to use on a tank anyway. Frenzied Regen, check. Maul, check. And then...? Feral Charge is HORRIBLE.
Having Thorns on a short CD helps with pulling considerably.
Just did oculus, i always flew over the next trash pack on my dragon, hopped off, and while descending into the trash pack on a parachute, i whipped up thorns and bear form.

I use thorns before most pulls. The determining factor for me is rage. If I expect a pull to be a low rage situation but have >~30 rage, I may not use them. If I am at <20 rage, I always thorn myself. Yes even boss fights, free threat is free threat.
A while back I mentioned the castsequence macro I use to powershift & thorns myself, which makes chain pulling small groups much easier to keep vengeance stacked.
I wish I had of screenshot of my 30k dps in MT from the mana wryms from just thorns & demo roar. /endcoolstorybro
I miss those thorns, but even at their current state I figured it was a given that most of us were glyphed & thorning ourselves on pull.
Edit: Added boss fight to top
